Chapter 1: The Awakening of the True Owner
“Get out of my house, you pathetic parasite! You have ten seconds before I throw your belongings into the rain!””
Harrison’s voice thundered through the living room.
A moment later, his hand struck Elena across the face.
She stumbled backward, her hip colliding with the edge of the coffee table before she crashed onto the polished wooden floor. A sharp pain spread through her lower lip. When she touched it, her fingertips came away red.
Outside, rain hammered against the windows of the garden villa.
Inside, the man she had loved for six years stood over her with an expression of pure disgust.
Harrison Whitmore adjusted the cuffs of his expensive shirt. He looked more like a wealthy businessman preparing for an important meeting than a husband who had just struck his wife.
Beside him stood Chloe Bennett, his twenty-eight-year-old mistress.
Chloe wore Elena’s favorite silk dressing gown.
The one Elena had bought during their honeymoon.
She glanced down at the woman on the floor and smiled.
“Honestly, Harrison, how long are you going to let her embarrass herself?”” Chloe asked, slipping her arm through his.
“She has no dignity whatsoever.””
Elena slowly lifted her head.
“Harrison,” she whispered.
“You hit me?””
He laughed.
“So what?””
The answer was so casual that Elena almost forgot to breathe.
For six years, she had cooked his meals, managed his household, entertained his business partners, and stood beside him whenever his company faced financial difficulties.
She had sold her jewelry to help him cover his first major business loss.
She had spent nights sitting beside him in hospital waiting rooms when he was recovering from an accident.
And now he was looking at her as though she were something unpleasant stuck to the bottom of his shoe.
“Get up,” Harrison ordered.
Elena tried to stand, but the pain in her abdomen made her pause.
Chloe noticed.
“Oh, don't tell me you're going to pretend you're pregnant now,” she said, laughing.
“That would be pathetic even for you.””
Elena's fingers tightened around her stomach.
“I haven't eaten since yesterday,” she said quietly.
“You told the housekeeper not to prepare dinner.””
Harrison rolled his eyes.
“Here we go again. Always making yourself the victim.””
“I'm your wife.””
“Not for much longer.””
He walked toward the entrance and kicked her old suitcase.
It slid across the floor, struck the front door, and fell onto its side.
“Take your things and leave.””
Elena stared at him.
“Where am I supposed to go?””
“That's your problem.””
Chloe tilted her head.
“You could always go back to wherever you came from. Surely someone will take pity on you.””
Elena looked at the woman wearing her dressing gown.
“Take that off.””
Chloe blinked.
“What?””
“That belongs to me.””
Chloe glanced at Harrison before deliberately pulling the belt tighter around her waist.
“Does it? I thought everything in this house belonged to my future husband.””
Harrison chuckled.
“Exactly. Chloe understands how marriage works. You should learn something from her.””
Elena slowly pushed herself upright.
Her cheek burned. Her lip throbbed.
But something inside her had changed.
She looked around the living room.
The Italian marble fireplace.
The antique chandelier.
The custom-built staircase.
The enormous windows overlooking the private garden.
Every corner held a memory.
She remembered choosing the wood flooring herself. She remembered approving the architectural drawings. She remembered standing in the empty garden six years earlier, imagining the home she would eventually share with her husband.
And she remembered the day Harrison signed their prenuptial agreement.
He had laughed at the time.
He had said it was unnecessary paperwork.
He had even joked that he would never need to read it because he trusted her.
Apparently, he had forgotten everything except the part where he thought he was entitled to her wealth.
Elena wiped the blood from her lower lip.
“Tell me something, Harrison.””
He sighed impatiently.
“What now?””
“You said this house belongs to you?””
Harrison spread his arms.
“Of course it does. The property documents are in my name. I paid for the renovations. I built my life here.””
“You paid for the renovations?””
“Yes!””
“With whose money?””
His expression hardened.
“Watch your mouth.””
Chloe stepped forward.
“Don't challenge him. You're leaving. That's all you need to understand.””
Elena gave a short, humorless laugh.
For the first time that evening, she looked directly into Harrison's eyes without fear.
“Then I suppose you'll have no objection to proving ownership in front of a lawyer.””
Harrison's face darkened.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No. I'm asking a question.””
He raised his hand again.
But before his palm could reach her face—
CRASH!
The front door flew open.
Three men in black suits entered, followed by two uniformed police officers.
The first man carried a leather briefcase. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his expression was as composed as if he had just walked into a boardroom.
Harrison froze.
“What the hell is this?””
The older man ignored him.
He walked straight toward Elena.
Then, to Harrison's complete disbelief, he bowed.
“Mrs. Whitmore,” he said respectfully.
“I apologize for arriving during such an unpleasant situation.””
Elena nodded.
“Mr. Collins.””
Harrison looked between them.
“Wait. You know each other?””
The lawyer opened his briefcase.
“My name is Richard Collins. I represent Mrs. Whitmore and the Whitmore family estate.””
Harrison laughed nervously.
“Then you've come to the wrong address. I'm Harrison Whitmore. This is my house.””
Richard finally turned toward him.
“I'm afraid you are mistaken.””
He removed a sealed document and placed it on the coffee table.
“Mrs. Whitmore requested an immediate ownership verification and enforcement of the relevant contractual provisions. The court has issued an order protecting the property and preventing unauthorized transfers.””
Harrison stared at him.
“What contractual provisions?””
Elena walked toward the coffee table.
She picked up the glass of red wine Harrison had abandoned and threw its contents directly into his face.
The wine splashed across his shirt and dripped down his expensive watch.
Chloe screamed.
“Harrison!””
Elena placed the empty glass down.
“You seem to have forgotten something.””
She reached into her coat pocket and produced a crimson folder.
“Six years ago, you signed a prenuptial agreement in front of a notary. You were so confident that I would never leave you that you barely glanced at it.””
Harrison snatched the folder.
His eyes raced across the first page.
Then the second.
His fingers began to tremble.
“No…”
Elena's voice remained steady.
“This garden villa was my independent property before our marriage. The land, the building, and the registered improvements were purchased through my family trust.””
Harrison looked up.
“What are you talking about?””
“The agreement contains an infidelity clause. If the husband commits adultery, attempts to conceal marital assets, or unlawfully disposes of the wife's independent property, the contractual remedies become enforceable.””
Chloe's smile disappeared.
Richard calmly continued.
“The evidence of your relationship with Ms. Bennett has been documented. We also have records of unauthorized withdrawals from the property management account.””
Harrison's face turned white.
“That's impossible. I never—”
“Your signature is on page fourteen,” Richard interrupted.
The lawyer pointed to the bottom of the document.
There it was.
Harrison Whitmore.
His own handwriting.
Six years earlier.
He remembered signing it. He remembered laughing about the legal formalities. He remembered telling Elena that paperwork could never come between them.
He had never imagined that the document would one day destroy his comfortable life.
He dropped to his knees.
“Elena…”
She took one step backward.
“Don't.””
“Listen to me. I was angry. I didn't mean what I said.””
“You hit me.””
“I know. I made a mistake.””
“You brought your mistress into my home.””
Chloe immediately stepped away from him.
“Don't drag me into this!””
Harrison grabbed Elena's skirt.
“Please. We can discuss this privately. Six years of marriage can't end because of one misunderstanding.””
Elena looked down at his trembling hands.
“Six years?””
Her voice cracked for the first time.
“Do you remember the night your company nearly collapsed? I sold my grandmother's diamond necklace to pay your employees.””
Harrison said nothing.
“Do you remember when you were sick and I stayed awake for three nights because you were afraid of dying?””
“Elena, please…”
“Do you remember promising that you would never make me regret choosing you?””
He lowered his head.
She pulled her skirt free.
“You didn't just betray your wife, Harrison. You betrayed the person who gave you everything.””
Richard handed her another document.
“Mrs. Whitmore, there's one more matter.””
Elena glanced at him.
“What is it?””
“The financial investigation uncovered something more serious than the affair.””
Harrison suddenly looked up.
“Richard, don't.””
The lawyer opened another folder.
“Your husband has been using the villa as collateral for several private loans. The lenders have been informed that the property cannot legally be pledged by him.””
Elena stared at the paperwork.
Harrison had not merely betrayed her.
He had been trying to gamble with her family's property.
Richard lowered his voice.
“And there is a second beneficiary listed in the financial records.””
“Who?””
The lawyer turned the page.
“Your husband's younger brother, Daniel Whitmore.””
For the first time that evening, Harrison looked genuinely terrified.
May you like
Because Daniel had been dead for three years.
And someone had been using his identity.
