Chapter 7: The Husband Who Was Never Her Husband
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Elena stood frozen in the basement archive, staring at the letter in her hands.
Her biological father was alive.
And according to her grandmother's handwriting, that man was Harrison Whitmore.
The same man who had married her.
The same man who had struck her, humiliated her, and tried to throw her out of her own home.
The same man whose name had been attached to every betrayal she had uncovered.
“No,” Elena whispered.
Richard Collins slowly removed his glasses.
“Mrs. Whitmore, we need to verify this before drawing conclusions.””
Elena looked at him.
“You think I don't know that?””
“I understand this is difficult.””
“Difficult?”” Her voice rose.
“My entire life has just become a lie!””
Thomas Reed stepped forward.
“Miss Elena…”
“Don't.””
He stopped.
Elena held up the letter.
“My grandmother knew. She knew Harrison was my biological father, and she let me marry him?””
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
“She was trying to protect you.””
“By letting me build a marriage with a man who was apparently my father?””
Thomas lowered his head.
Richard picked up the envelope and examined its date.
“There is something unusual here.””
Elena turned toward him.
“What?””
“The letter was written twelve years ago.””
“So?””
“Harrison was not yet your husband. According to the date, Margaret discovered something about your parentage before your marriage.””
Elena stared at him.
“Then why didn't she tell me?””
Richard carefully placed the letter on the table.
“I suspect she was waiting for confirmation.””
Marcus opened the wooden box.
“There are more documents.””
He removed a birth certificate, several medical records, and a sealed envelope bearing the logo of a private laboratory.
Elena reached for the birth certificate.
The document listed Victoria Sinclair as the mother.
The father's name was left blank.
She turned it over.
A handwritten note appeared on the back.
Biological father: Charles Whitmore.
Elena frowned.
“Charles?””
Richard looked at the document.
“Charles Whitmore was Harrison's father.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“That explains something.””
Elena turned toward him.
“What?””
“Your grandmother once told me that she had discovered an affair involving Victoria and Charles Whitmore. But she never told me the child was you.””
Elena gripped the table.
“So Harrison is not my father?””
“No,” Richard said firmly.
“The document identifies his father.””
Elena looked back at the letter.
Then at the name Harrison Whitmore.
She understood.
Her grandmother had written that her biological father was alive.
She had not written that the man was Harrison.
She had written his name because he was the person responsible for concealing the truth.
The sentence had been deliberately ambiguous.
Elena felt a wave of relief so powerful that she nearly collapsed.
But it lasted only a moment.
“Why would Harrison know about this?””
Richard examined the laboratory envelope.
“Perhaps he discovered the truth after your grandmother died.””
Marcus opened it carefully.
Inside was a DNA test report.
The results showed a direct biological relationship between Elena and Charles Whitmore.
There was also a second report, dated six years earlier.
This one compared Elena's DNA with Harrison's.
The result was negative.
Elena stared.
“He knew.””
Richard nodded.
“He knew before your wedding.””
The room seemed to grow colder.
Elena remembered Harrison's proposal.
The champagne.
The flowers.
His promise that he wanted to build a future with her.
Had every word been part of a performance?
She picked up the report.
“Why would he marry me if he knew I wasn't his daughter?””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Because the marriage gave him access to the estate.””
“But he knew I was an heiress.””
“Exactly.””
Marcus opened another file.
“There is something else. Harrison wasn't the only person who knew about your parentage.””
He showed Elena a series of emails.
One was between Harrison and Chloe.
The date was five months before their wedding.
The old woman is getting suspicious. Once Elena marries me, we can get control of the trust. She won't question anything if she believes I'm protecting her.
Elena read the message twice.
Then she found another.
The girl still believes Margaret is her mother. Keep it that way. If she learns Victoria is alive, the whole arrangement collapses.
Elena's hands trembled.
Chloe had known everything.
She had not entered the marriage as a mistress who accidentally fell in love with a married man.
She had been part of the scheme before Elena ever became Harrison's wife.
A third message caught her attention.
Daniel has to disappear before he talks.
The date was three years earlier.
Elena looked at Richard.
“Daniel discovered the truth.””
“Yes,” he replied.
“And they made him disappear.””
Marcus shook his head.
“We still don't know whether Harrison arranged the accident, but the evidence suggests he was involved in the cover-up.””
Elena closed the file.
“Find Daniel.””
Richard nodded.
“We will.””
“No. I want to speak to him myself.””
Before anyone could respond, footsteps echoed down the corridor.
A woman appeared at the entrance.
Victoria.
She looked at the documents scattered across the table.
Then she looked at Elena.
“So Margaret finally told you.””
Elena's expression hardened.
“You knew?””
Victoria nodded.
“I knew everything.””
“You knew I was your daughter?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe Margaret was my mother?””
Victoria took a slow breath.
“I didn't have a choice.””
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that. My grandmother had no choice. Thomas had no choice.
Richard knows nothing. You had no choice.””
Victoria walked closer.
“Do you think I wanted to lose you?””
“You could have come to me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Three times.””
Victoria's voice cracked.
“The first time, you were seven. Margaret had you escorted away from the garden when I approached. The second time, you were thirteen.
She told you I was an unstable woman who wanted to steal you. The third time, you were twenty-one. I sent you a letter, but it was returned unopened.””
Elena stared at her.
“I never received any letters.””
“I know.””
Victoria removed a small envelope from her handbag.
It contained three unopened letters.
Each was addressed to Elena.
Each bore the same handwriting.
Elena touched them.
“Why didn't you come back?””
“Because Margaret threatened to destroy the life I had rebuilt if I tried again.””
Victoria looked toward the laboratory reports.
“And because she told me Harrison was dangerous.””
Elena frowned.
“Then why did you let me marry him?””
“I didn't know he would propose. By the time I found out, the wedding arrangements were already underway.””
“You could have stopped it!””
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“I went to Margaret. I begged her to tell you the truth. She refused. She said you were happy and that exposing the past would only hurt you.””
Elena turned away.
For years, she had believed her grandmother had rescued her.
Now she was beginning to understand that Margaret had also imprisoned her inside a carefully constructed story.
Victoria approached her.
“I am not asking you to forgive me.””
“Good.””
“But I want you to know one thing. Your father was not a monster.””
Elena looked at her.
“Charles Whitmore?””
Victoria nodded.
“He loved me. He wanted to marry me. But Margaret refused because he was already engaged to another woman.””
“Then why did she hide me?””
“Because she believed Charles would fight for custody. She was afraid the Whitmores would take you away.””
Elena looked at the old photograph again.
“Where is he now?””
Victoria's face changed.
“He died.””
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
Elena felt the air leave her lungs.
“What?””
Victoria nodded.
“He spent years searching for you. He never knew where Margaret had hidden you. He died believing his daughter had been taken from him forever.””
Elena sat down.
Another person had been lost to her because of secrets she had never chosen.
Then Victoria reached into her handbag and removed a final document.
“This is the reason I came today.””
It was a trust amendment.
The date was only three months before Margaret's death.
The document transferred a controlling interest in the Sinclair estate to a new beneficiary.
Elena read the name.
*Amelia Sinclair.*
The daughter Victoria had claimed Margaret had taken from her.
Elena looked up.
“Amelia is alive?””
Victoria nodded.
“And she has been living under another name.””
Richard took the document.
“Who is she?””
Victoria looked directly at Elena.
Then she said something that made the entire room fall silent.
“Chloe Bennett.””
Elena stared.
“No.””
“Chloe is my daughter. Margaret took her when she was six months old and gave her to another family.””
Elena's mind raced.
Chloe was Victoria's daughter.
Amelia Sinclair.
The rightful beneficiary of the trust.
And Harrison had been using her to steal the very estate she was entitled to inherit.
But if Chloe was the missing heiress, why had she been helping Harrison?
Victoria answered the question before Elena could ask.
“Because she doesn't know who she really is.””
Then Richard's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And slowly turned toward Elena.
“Mrs. Whitmore, the police have found Daniel.””
“Where?””
Richard swallowed.
“Inside the private residence registered to Chloe Bennett.””
Elena stood.
“Is he alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then take me to him.””
Richard hesitated.
“There is a complication.””
“What?””
May you like
Daniel had been arrested.
And he had identified Elena as the person who ordered him to be kidnapped.
