Chapter 8: The Woman Who Wanted My Life
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
The words echoed in my head.
*Olivia is claiming she is pregnant too.*
I looked at Vanessa through the phone.
“What?””
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“She’s pregnant?””
Vanessa was silent.
“Yes.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I sat down slowly.
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
My baby.
My daughter.
The child I had protected before she was even born.
And now another woman was using a pregnancy as part of a plan that had already destroyed my marriage.
“How far along?””
“We don't know yet.””
“But she said she is?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
For one brief moment, I felt something I hated admitting.
Fear.
Not for Daniel.
Not for Olivia.
For my child.
Because I knew what they were capable of.
Vanessa continued.
“There’s something else.””
I opened my eyes.
“What?””
“Her claim changes the situation legally.””
“How?””
“If she is actually pregnant with Daniel’s child, she may attempt to portray herself as part of Daniel’s future family.””
I stared at the wall.
Future family.
Those words hurt.
Because that was exactly what Daniel had planned.
A replacement.
A new life.
A cleaner version of himself.
One where he didn't have to face the damage he caused.
“But is she really pregnant?””
“We don't know yet.””
“Can she prove it?””
“She has provided medical records.””
My stomach tightened.
“Are they real?””
“That’s what we need to determine.””
I looked at the documents scattered across the table.
Everything about Olivia felt calculated.
The timing.
The messages.
The trust.
The custody claim.
She hadn't just entered Daniel’s life.
She had studied it.
Planned around it.
And now she was introducing another child into the chaos.
“Vanessa.””
“Yes?””
“I want to know everything about her.””
A pause.
“Are you sure?””
I looked at the hospital bracelet still around my wrist.
At the bandage covering my burned hand.
At the wedding ring I had left behind.
“Yes.””
My voice hardened.
“I spent years knowing everything about Daniel.””
I looked toward the window.
“Now I want to know who helped him destroy me.””
Three days later, I was sitting in Vanessa’s office when she placed a file in front of me.
“Olivia Hart.””
The name looked ordinary.
Almost harmless.
That bothered me.
Because dangerous people rarely looked dangerous.
They looked charming.
They looked trustworthy.
They smiled.
They complimented you.
They made you feel safe.
Until they didn't.
Vanessa opened the file.
“Olivia works in financial consulting.””
I frowned.
“Financial consulting?””
“Yes.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She knew about money.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She specialized in asset planning.””
I stared at her.
“So she knew exactly what she was doing.””
“Yes.””
The answer was simple.
Terrifying.
Vanessa continued.
“She met Daniel at a business event.””
“Who introduced them?””
“No one.””
I looked confused.
“Then how did she know about him?””
Vanessa turned a page.
“That's the interesting part.””
“What?””
“She researched his family before they met.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””
She slid another paper across the desk.
An old email.
From Olivia.
The date was almost a year before Daniel told me he met her.
I read the message.
*“The Mitchell family trust may be difficult to access, but Daniel is the weakest point.””*
My blood ran cold.
“She knew before she met him.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the email again.
“She targeted him.””
“Yes.””
For the first time, I felt something close to relief.
Not because my husband was innocent.
He wasn't.
But because the truth was finally becoming clear.
Daniel wasn't a victim.
He was a willing participant.
But Olivia had seen exactly what kind of person he was.
Someone insecure.
Someone desperate.
Someone who wanted to feel important.
And she used that.
Vanessa continued.
“We also found something about the pregnancy claim.””
My head lifted.
“What?””
“She filed the statement before getting medical confirmation.””
I frowned.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning she announced it before she had proof.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because she wanted everyone to know before anyone could question it.””
A strategy.
Of course.
Everything was a strategy.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Daniel.
I almost ignored it.
But something told me to answer.
“Hello.””
His voice came immediately.
“Emily.””
I said nothing.
“I need to talk to you.””
“You already did.””
“No.””
His voice sounded desperate.
“Not like this.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She nodded.
Speaker.
I put the phone down.
“What do you want?””
A long silence.
Then:
“She lied to me.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Again.
Olivia.
Not his choices.
Not his betrayal.
Her.
“What did she lie about?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She told me she was leaving her husband.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked up.
I continued.
“She was married?””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“Daniel.””
“I didn't know.””
“You didn't know?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“She told me she was divorced.””
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“Were you going to tell me you were leaving me?””
Silence.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“When?””
“After the baby was born.””
I looked away.
“Why?””
“Because I thought…”
He stopped.
“What?””
“I thought I could make everyone happy.””
I laughed softly.
“You thought you could have both.””
He didn't deny it.
Then he said:
“Emily, I made a mistake.””
I looked at the phone.
“No, Daniel.””
My voice was calm.
“You made a series of choices.””
Silence.
“You chose Olivia.””
Silence.
“You chose the money.””
Silence.
“You chose to let your mother hurt me.””
His breathing changed.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You know now.””
A long pause.
Then:
“I want to fix this.””
Those words.
Those impossible words.
“I want my family back.””
I stared at the wall.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
I touched my stomach.
“Daniel, your family was sitting on the floor while you watched.””
Silence.
“You don't get to miss something after you destroy it.””
He whispered:
“I'm sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“I believe you regret it.””
A pause.
“But regret is not the same as change.””
Then I ended the call.
That evening, Richard arrived with more documents.
His expression told me something was wrong.
“What happened?””
He placed a folder down.
“Olivia’s husband contacted me.””
I froze.
“She has a husband?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
I opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Olivia.
Standing beside a man.
A wedding photo.
A real wedding photo.
The date was only two years earlier.
My stomach turned.
“She was married when she met Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Where is her husband now?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“He disappeared.””
“What does that mean?””
“He filed for divorce after discovering her affair.””
I stared.
“And Daniel knew?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at the photo.
A woman who had destroyed one marriage.
Then targeted another.
“How did her husband find out?””
Richard hesitated.
“Because she was doing the same thing.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“She was trying to move assets before the divorce.””
I felt cold.
“She did this before.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa arrived a few minutes later.
She had one more file.
“I found something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She placed it on the table.
“Olivia has a pattern.””
I opened the file.
Previous relationships.
Financial disputes.
Legal complaints.
Different cities.
Different names.
Same behavior.
She didn't fall in love with wealthy men.
She searched for vulnerable ones.
Men with something to prove.
Men who wanted to feel admired.
Men like Daniel.
Then I saw something that made my blood freeze.
A document dated six months earlier.
A financial analysis.
About me.
My income.
My savings.
My expected inheritance.
My pregnancy.
I looked at Vanessa.
“She planned this before Daniel?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt my hands shake.
“She didn't want him.””
“No.””
“Then what did she want?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
The house.
The trust.
The money.
The life I built.
My life.
My future.
Then Richard’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?””
He listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
“What happened?””
He ended the call.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“Daniel was arrested.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Richard looked at the documents.
“The police found evidence connected to the trust.””
I stood.
“What evidence?””
He looked at me.
“Forgery.””
The room went silent.
“Daniel forged your signature.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Richard’s voice lowered.
“And Emily…”
I stared.
“What?””
He took a breath.
“They found the original document.””
I waited.
“The one he was trying to make you sign.””
My heart pounded.
“But?””
Richard looked at me.
“He already submitted a copy with your signature.””
I felt dizzy.
“Meaning?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Daniel didn't just plan to trick you.””
He looked at the papers.
“He already pretended you agreed.””
The room went silent.
And for the first time since Thanksgiving night…
I wasn't thinking about my marriage.
I wasn't thinking about revenge.
May you like
I was thinking about one thing.
How many other lies had he created with my name on them?
