Thinking

Chapter 6: The Secret I Was Never Supposed to Find

The words stayed on the page.

*Once Emily signs, Daniel becomes useless. Make sure he doesn't interfere.*

For a moment, nobody reacted.

It was as if the entire room had stopped breathing.

Then Daniel laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn't accept it.

“No.””

He shook his head slowly.

“No, that's not possible.””

Richard folded the paper.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“She wouldn't say that.””

I watched him.

And something inside me felt strangely empty.

Not satisfaction.

Not happiness.

Just exhaustion.

Because even after everything he had done to me, a part of him still wanted to believe someone else loved him.

Maybe that was the hardest thing to see.

Daniel wasn't only a liar.

He was also someone who had spent so long chasing approval that he couldn't recognize when he was being used.

But I couldn't save him anymore.

I had spent years trying.

And look where it brought me.

A burned hand.

A broken marriage.

A Thanksgiving night I would never forget.

Patricia suddenly stood.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the documents.

“You're all acting like Olivia is some criminal mastermind.””

Richard stared at her.

“She manipulated our son.””

Patricia scoffed.

“Our son made his own choices.””

The room became quiet.

Because for the first time, Patricia had accidentally said something true.

I looked at Daniel.

She was right.

Olivia may have manipulated him.

But Daniel still made every choice along the way.

He chose secrecy.

He chose lies.

He chose to stand by while his mother hurt me.

He chose himself.

Richard nodded slowly.

“Exactly.””

Patricia frowned.

“What?””

“You just admitted it.””

She looked confused.

Richard continued.

“You spent years defending Daniel by saying he was an adult who could make his own decisions.””

He looked at the papers.

“Now that those decisions have consequences, suddenly someone else is responsible?””

Patricia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For once, she had no argument.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you love her?””

The question surprised everyone.

Especially him.

Daniel looked at me.

“I…”

I waited.

Not because I wanted the answer.

Because I needed to hear whether he could finally tell the truth.

“I thought I did.””

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, it hurt less than another lie.

“You thought?””

He rubbed his face.

“She made me feel different.””

I nodded slowly.

“Different from what?””

He looked down.

“From who I was with you.””

I understood.

And that was the part that broke my heart the most.

Not because I blamed myself.

Because I realized he didn't want a partner.

He wanted an escape.

Someone who didn't know his failures.

Someone who only saw the man he pretended to be.

I had seen everything.

The debt.

The fear.

The insecurity.

The mistakes.

And instead of becoming better, he hated me for knowing.

Richard gathered the papers.

“Emily, you need to leave tonight.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“I mean immediately.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

He glanced toward Daniel.

Then Patricia.

“Because you are not safe here.””

The words hit me.

Safe.

I hadn't even considered that.

I had been so focused on the betrayal that I forgot what had happened hours earlier.

Patricia had hit me.

Daniel had watched.

And nobody had called for help.

Nobody had checked my baby.

My hand went instinctively to my stomach.

Suddenly, fear replaced anger.

“What if something happened?””

Richard immediately moved.

“We’re going to the hospital.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I’ll come.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His face fell.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I held his gaze.

“You don't get to be my protector now.””

The silence that followed was painful.

Because he knew I was right.

A few hours ago, I needed him.

I needed my husband.

And he chose not to be that person.

Richard grabbed his coat.

“I'll drive you.””

Patricia immediately objected.

“Richard, you're taking her side?””

He looked at his wife.

“No.””

She froze.

“I am taking the side of what is right.””

That sentence seemed to hurt her more than an insult.

Because she had spent years believing loyalty meant defending family no matter what.

But Richard finally understood something.

Family without respect wasn't love.

It was just an excuse.

As we walked toward the door, Daniel spoke again.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

I didn't turn around.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness.””

I stayed silent.

“But I need you to know something.””

My hand tightened around my coat.

“What?””

His voice cracked.

“I never wanted you to get hurt.””

I slowly turned.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“You didn't need to want it.””

His expression changed.

“You allowed it.””

That was all I said.

Because there was nothing left.

No argument.

No explanation.

No apology big enough.

I walked out.

The cold night air hit my face immediately.

For the first time in hours, I could breathe.

The hospital lights were bright.

Too bright.

They examined my hand, checked the burns, and monitored the baby.

Every second waiting felt endless.

Richard sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

Finally, he said:

“I failed you.””

I looked at him.

“You didn't know everything.””

“I should have known enough.””

His voice was heavy.

“I saw my son becoming someone I didn't recognize.””

He looked down.

“And I ignored it because admitting it meant admitting I failed as a father.””

I understood that.

Because I had done something similar.

I ignored signs because admitting the truth meant admitting my marriage wasn't what I thought.

The nurse came in after the examination.

“The baby looks fine.””

The words nearly made me collapse with relief.

Fine.

My baby was fine.

After everything.

I closed my eyes.

And for the first time that night, I cried.

Not because of Daniel.

Not because of Olivia.

Because my child had almost been brought into a family built on lies.

Richard waited quietly.

When I finally calmed down, he handed me a small envelope.

“What is this?””

“Something I found before I came home.””

I stared at it.

“Another surprise?””

He looked sad.

“I wish it wasn't.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a printed email.

From Olivia.

To Daniel.

My heart sank.

“Why are you showing me this?””

“Because you deserve to know the full truth.””

I read the first line.

Then the second.

And my entire body went cold.

The email wasn't about money.

It wasn't about the house.

It wasn't about leaving me.

It was about my baby.

I read it again.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

*“After the divorce, Emily won't have enough resources to fight for custody.””*

My fingers went numb.

Divorce.

Custody.

They weren't just planning to take my marriage.

They were planning to take my child.

I looked at Richard.

“Did Daniel agree to this?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Answer me.””

Richard looked down.

“His reply was attached.””

I unfolded the next page.

Daniel's response.

Only three sentences.

But they destroyed whatever small piece of hope remained.

*“You're right. Emily is too emotional. The court will see that.””*

I couldn't breathe.

The woman who carried his child.

The woman who built his life.

The woman who protected him for years.

He planned to use my love against me.

I put the paper down.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Because if I moved too quickly, I felt like I would break.

Richard looked at me.

“Emily.””

I stared at the documents.

Something inside me changed.

The woman who left that house was broken.

But the woman sitting in that hospital room was different.

Because now I knew.

This wasn't about saving my marriage.

It was about protecting myself.

And protecting my baby.

I looked at Richard.

“Do you still have copies of everything?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

He looked surprised by my tone.

“Emily?””

I folded the papers.

“I want every document.””

“Why?””

I looked toward the hospital window.

At the city lights outside.

At the life I was about to rebuild.

“Because Daniel spent a year planning how to destroy me.””

I turned back.

“Now I'm going to spend one night planning how to protect myself.””

Richard was silent.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him answer.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression hardened.

“Where?””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

Richard ended the call.

He looked at me.

“It was the attorney.””

“Which attorney?””

“The one representing Olivia.””

My heart started racing.

“What did they want?””

Richard’s eyes met mine.

“They filed something tonight.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

He took a breath.

“They filed an emergency motion.””

I gripped the blanket.

“For what?””

Richard looked at me.

May you like

And the answer made my entire body freeze.

“They’re trying to stop you from leaving with your baby.””
