Thinking

Chapter 7: The Fight for My Child

The words didn't make sense at first.

“They’re trying to stop you from leaving with your baby.””

I stared at Richard.

The hospital room suddenly felt too small.

Too bright.

Too quiet.

“What?””

Richard sat forward.

“The attorney filed an emergency request tonight.””

My heart started pounding.

“An emergency request for what?””

He looked at the papers in his hand.

“For temporary custody arrangements.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Custody.

That word.

That horrible, terrifying word.

I pressed both hands against my stomach.

My baby was still inside me.

Still growing.

Still safe.

And somehow, they were already trying to take her away.

“How can they do that?””

Richard’s face softened.

“They're making claims.””

“What claims?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation scared me.

“Richard.””

He looked at me.

“They’re saying Daniel is concerned about your emotional stability.””

I stared at him.

My mouth opened slightly.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“My emotional stability?””

I looked at my burned hand.

At the bandage wrapped around my skin.

At the bruising on my cheek.

“The woman who got slapped at Thanksgiving dinner is the unstable one?””

Richard looked away.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need to understand.””

I leaned forward.

“What exactly are they saying about me?””

Richard handed me the documents.

“They claim you have become increasingly hostile toward Daniel.””

I read the page.

My hands trembled.

“They’re saying I was controlling?””

“Yes.””

“That I isolated him?””

Richard nodded.

“That you created financial pressure in the marriage.””

I looked up.

Financial pressure.

The phrase almost made me sick.

Because Daniel had created the debt.

I had carried it.

And now he was rewriting the story.

I kept reading.

Then I saw it.

A statement from Daniel.

My husband’s words.

*“Emily often reacts emotionally and has difficulty controlling her anger.””*

I closed my eyes.

The memory of him sitting at the table came back.

His mother’s hand.

The soup.

The pain.

The silence.

And his voice.

Maybe now you'll learn how to act in this house.

I looked at Richard.

“He wrote this after tonight?””

Richard didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

I knew.

Daniel wasn't just leaving me.

He was building a case against me.

A story where he was the victim.

Where I was the problem.

Where everything I had endured became evidence against me.

I handed the papers back.

“I need a lawyer.””

Richard nodded immediately.

“I already called one.””

I looked at him.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because someone should have protected you sooner.””

That sentence almost broke me.

Because I realized how long I had gone without hearing it.

Someone should have protected you.

Not blamed you.

Not silenced you.

Not asked you to understand everyone else.

Protected you.

The next morning felt unreal.

The world outside the hospital continued as if nothing had happened.

People walked into coffee shops.

Cars drove through intersections.

Families laughed on sidewalks.

And my entire life had changed overnight.

I sat across from the attorney Richard hired.

Her name was Vanessa Carter.

She was calm.

Focused.

The kind of person who didn't waste words.

She reviewed every document.

Every message.

Every financial record.

Every statement from Daniel.

Then she looked at me.

“Emily, I need you to answer something honestly.””

“Okay.””

“Before tonight, did you ever threaten Daniel?””

“No.””

“Did you ever prevent him from seeing friends or family?””

“No.””

“Did you ever refuse to allow him access to money?””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Did you financially support him?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

I told her.

She stopped writing.

“Your savings?””

“Most of it.””

“Your vehicle?””

“Yes.””

“Your additional work?””

“Yes.””

She looked down at her notes.

Then back at me.

“They're going to have a difficult time convincing anyone that you were controlling when you spent years supporting him.””

I exhaled.

“But what about the affair?””

Vanessa’s expression became serious.

“That matters.””

“Can it help me?””

“It depends.””

“On what?””

“Whether Daniel admits anything. Whether we can prove intent. Whether we can show a pattern.””

I looked at the folder.

“We have proof.””

Vanessa nodded.

“We do.””

She tapped the documents.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

“Daniel is trying to move quickly because he believes he has an advantage.””

“Why?””

“Because you're pregnant.””

I frowned.

“He thinks that helps him?””

“He thinks it makes you vulnerable.””

The anger came back.

Cold.

Controlled.

“He thought I would be too tired to fight.””

Vanessa didn't disagree.

“He underestimated you.””

I looked out the window.

A year ago, I would have never imagined sitting here.

Preparing for a legal battle against the man I married.

Preparing to defend myself from the person who promised to protect me.

Then my phone rang.

I froze.

The screen showed Daniel’s name.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Do you want to answer?””

I stared at the phone.

Part of me wanted to.

Part of me wanted to hear him admit everything.

But another part knew better.

I answered.

“Hello.””

There was silence.

Then:

“Emily.””

His voice sounded tired.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Tired.

“What do you want?””

“I need to talk to you.””

“No.””

“Please.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She gave me a small nod.

Put it on speaker.

I did.

Daniel continued.

“I know you're angry.””

I almost laughed.

“Angry?””

He went quiet.

“I know I hurt you.””

“No, Daniel.””

My voice was steady.

“You betrayed me.””

Silence.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””

My fingers tightened.

“You planned a life without me.””

He didn't respond.

That was enough.

Then he said:

“I never wanted Olivia to do what she did.””

Vanessa looked at me.

I stayed silent.

Daniel continued.

“She lied to me.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The thing I expected.

He was finally admitting Olivia manipulated him.

But not because he understood what he did.

Because he was suffering now.

“I lost everything.””

The words made me cold.

“You lost everything?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the documents.

“You still don't understand.””

“What?””

“You lost Olivia.””

Silence.

“I lost my husband.””

His breathing changed.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I swallowed.

“You keep talking about what happened to you.””

My voice shook.

“Do you know what happened to me?””

Silence.

“I spent years believing I was building a family.””

My eyes filled.

“While you were building an exit plan.””

Daniel whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

For a moment, I almost believed him.

Then I remembered.

The slap.

The soup.

The documents.

The custody claim.

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“You're sorry because you got caught.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then prove it.””

Silence.

“Withdraw the custody request.””

The line went quiet.

Vanessa watched me carefully.

Finally Daniel said:

“I can't.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because my lawyer says I need to protect myself.””

I nodded slowly.

“Protect yourself.””

The same words.

Always.

“From me?””

“No.””

“From the mother of your child?””

He didn't answer.

And that silence was louder than anything.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa said:

“He just gave us something important.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He admitted he is following legal advice instead of denying the accusation.””

I frowned.

“And?””

“And it shows his priority isn't reconciliation.””

She closed the file.

“It’s control.””

Later that evening, Richard came to visit.

He looked exhausted.

“I found something.””

I sat up.

“What?””

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“This was hidden in Daniel’s office.””

My stomach tightened.

“Another document?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“What is it?””

Richard looked at me.

“A recording.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“A recording of what?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Daniel and Olivia.””

I felt a chill.

“What do they say?””

Richard looked at the envelope.

“I haven't listened to all of it.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted you to decide.””

I stared at him.

“Play it.””

Richard inserted the recording.

Static filled the room.

Then voices.

Daniel’s voice.

And Olivia’s.

At first, I couldn't understand.

Then Olivia spoke clearly.

“Once she signs, you leave.””

Daniel sounded nervous.

“What about the baby?””

A pause.

Then Olivia answered:

“Daniel, stop pretending you care about the baby.””

My heart stopped.

The recording continued.

“She’s your way out.””

Daniel whispered:

“What if Emily fights?””

Olivia laughed.

And that sound made my skin crawl.

“She won’t.””

Another pause.

“She never has.””

I looked at Richard.

The recording continued.

Then Olivia said the words that changed everything.

“She loves you too much to destroy you.””

The room went silent.

Because suddenly I understood.

They didn't just underestimate me.

They built their entire plan around one thing.

The belief that I was too forgiving.

Too loyal.

Too in love.

Richard stopped the recording.

I looked at the dark screen.

Then I slowly stood.

“I want the rest.””

Richard looked surprised.

“The recording?””

“Yes.””

I picked up the folder.

“And I want everything they have.””

Vanessa watched me carefully.

“Emily?””

I looked at the papers.

At my name.

At the lies written about me.

“They thought I would stay quiet.””

My voice was calm.

“They thought I would protect Daniel.””

I looked up.

“They forgot something.””

“What?””

I held the recording.

“I protected him because I loved him.””

A pause.

“Now I’m protecting myself because I finally learned the difference.””

The next morning, Vanessa called me.

Her voice was different.

Serious.

“Emily, we found something.””

“What?””

“A document filed by Olivia.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of document?””

“A request to become involved in the custody proceedings.””

I froze.

“She’s trying to get custody?””

Vanessa was quiet.

Then she said:

“No.””

My heart raced.

“Then what?””

“She’s not asking for custody.””

“Then why is she involved?””

A long pause.

“Because Emily…”

May you like

Her voice lowered.

“Olivia is claiming she is pregnant too.””
