Chapter 5: The Betrayal Inside My Own Home
I stared at the name until the letters stopped looking real.
Lauren Mitchell.
My husband’s younger sister.
The woman who had hugged me at my baby shower.
The woman who had cried when she found out I was having a daughter.
The woman who had held my hand and told me, “You’re going to be the best mom.””
My mind rejected it before my heart even had time to hurt.
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth.
A whisper.
A denial.
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me he’s wrong.””
Daniel didn't answer.
That was the cruelest part.
Not the silence itself.
The fact that I knew.
Because if it was a lie, Daniel would have fought.
He would have shouted.
He would have accused his father of making things up.
But he stood there frozen.
Caught.
Again.
I turned toward Lauren.
She looked like she was about to cry.
“Emily…”
I stepped back.
“Don't.””
Her face crumpled.
“I can explain.””
I laughed softly.
That sentence.
Everyone in that room had used it.
Explain.
As if explanations could rebuild everything they had destroyed.
“How long?”” I asked.
Lauren looked down.
“I…”
“How long did you know?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“That wasn't my question.””
The room went silent.
Lauren swallowed.
“Eight months.””
My chest tightened.
Eight months.
I placed a hand against the edge of the doorway.
Eight months ago.
That was when Daniel started changing.
That was when he became distant.
That was when he stopped touching my stomach when the baby moved.
That was when he started sleeping with his phone under his pillow.
And Lauren knew.
For eight months.
I looked at her.
“You sat in my kitchen.””
She cried quietly.
“You made tea with me.””
Silence.
“You asked me about baby names.””
More silence.
“You told me Daniel was lucky to have me.””
Her lips trembled.
“I meant it.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You don't get to say that.””
I pointed toward the papers.
“If you meant it, you would have warned me.””
Lauren looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because it meant she knew.
She knew I was walking toward a cliff.
And she watched me keep walking.
Richard sighed.
“I found messages between Lauren and Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Messages?””
He nodded.
“About Olivia. About the trust. About the documents.””
Lauren immediately shook her head.
“I wasn't helping them.””
Richard looked at her.
“Then why did you tell Daniel when Emily was planning to review the paperwork?””
Lauren froze.
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I…”
I stepped closer.
“What did you tell him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I told him you were suspicious.””
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“So when I asked questions…”
She whispered:
“He knew.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything made sense.
Every time I got close to the truth.
Every time Daniel suddenly became defensive.
Every time he changed his story.
Someone had warned him.
Someone inside my own family.
I looked at Lauren.
“Why?””
She started crying.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing my family.””
I stared at her.
“And what about me?””
She had no answer.
That was the answer.
I walked back toward the table.
My anger was gone.
Something much colder had replaced it.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel looked up.
“Emily.””
I ignored him.
I looked at Lauren.
“You have one chance.””
She wiped her face.
“Daniel came to me last year.””
My stomach tightened.
“He said he was unhappy.””
I almost smiled.
Of course.
The same story.
The unhappy husband.
The trapped man.
The wife who supposedly changed him.
“He said you didn't support him anymore.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
“I told him he was wrong.””
Lauren continued.
“I told him you had sacrificed a lot for him.””
My expression softened for half a second.
Then she continued.
“But he said you made him feel like he owed you.””
The words hurt because I knew they came from him.
Not her.
“Then what?””
“He met Olivia.””
I swallowed.
“And you knew.””
Lauren nodded.
“I found out.””
“When?””
“Three months after it started.””
Three months.
She knew three months after.
And she still smiled at me.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
She looked destroyed.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said if I told you, Dad would find out about my own financial problems.””
Richard looked disappointed.
“Lauren.””
She cried harder.
“I know. I know it was wrong.””
I looked at her.
“So you protected yourself.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
There it was.
The truth.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone had something they were afraid to lose.
Except me.
I was the only one who had already lost everything.
Daniel finally stepped forward.
“Emily, please.””
I turned.
“What?””
His face was desperate now.
Not because he lost me.
Because he lost control.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I stared.
“You didn't want to hurt me?””
“No.””
“Daniel, you watched me fall.””
His face changed.
“You watched your mother slap me.””
He looked down.
“You said I deserved it.””
His jaw tightened.
“I was angry.””
“You planned to leave me.””
“I was confused.””
“You used my money.””
“I was trying to fix things.””
I stepped closer.
“You keep changing the words.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“You call betrayal confusion.””
I shook my head.
“You call manipulation a mistake.””
My voice broke.
“And you call cruelty being angry.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the man I had married.
“I spent eight years loving a version of you that didn't exist.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“That's not fair.””
I almost couldn't believe it.
“Fair?””
I pointed around the room.
“Was any of this fair?””
No answer.
I picked up my phone from the table.
I needed to leave.
I needed air.
I needed distance from every person who had lied to me.
But before I could open the door, Richard spoke.
“Emily.””
I stopped.
“There’s something about Olivia you don't know.””
I closed my eyes.
I didn't want another revelation.
I didn't think I could handle another one.
But I turned.
“What?””
Richard hesitated.
“She didn't just want Daniel.””
My brow furrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“She contacted me yesterday.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“What?””
Richard ignored him.
“She offered me a deal.””
My stomach tightened.
“A deal?””
“She said if I removed Daniel from the trust and transferred control to him, she would disappear.””
I stared.
“That doesn't make sense.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Because Olivia wasn't only interested in Daniel.””
The room went quiet.
“She was interested in the money.””
I looked at Daniel.
And for the first time that night, something changed in his expression.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Realization.
“You didn't know.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
I stepped back.
“She was using you too.””
His face went pale.
Richard nodded.
“She had no intention of building a life with you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“She researched the trust.””
“No.””
“She researched the property.””
Daniel’s breathing became heavier.
“No.””
“And she researched Emily.””
I felt a chill.
Daniel looked at his father.
“What are you saying?””
Richard opened another file.
“She knew exactly who your wife was.””
He looked at me.
“She knew about your income. Your savings. Your pregnancy.””
My stomach dropped.
Richard placed the file on the table.
“She chose you because you were the easiest person to manipulate.””
Daniel stared at the papers.
For the first time all night, he looked completely broken.
Not because he hurt me.
Because he realized someone had hurt him.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then Richard said:
“There’s one more message.””
He opened the file.
“This one was sent from Olivia’s phone.””
Everyone waited.
Richard read the first line.
And Daniel’s entire face changed.
Because the message wasn't about leaving me.
It wasn't about the money.
It was about something much darker.
The message said:
*“Once Emily signs, Daniel becomes useless. Make sure he doesn't interfere.””*
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
And suddenly I understood.
Daniel wasn't the mastermind.
He was just another person being used.
But that didn't make him innocent.
May you like
Because before someone else destroyed him…
he had already decided to destroy me.
