Thinking

Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Secret Account

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The name on the paper stared back at me.

Olivia Hart.

Two words.

Two words that somehow carried the weight of every strange late-night phone call, every unexplained absence, every moment when Daniel had looked at his phone and turned the screen away from me.

I had spent months wondering if I was imagining things.

I wasn't.

I was just the last person to know the truth about my own marriage.

“Emily…”

Daniel’s voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Not annoyed.

Not dismissive.

Afraid.

I looked up at him.

The man standing in front of me looked like someone who had finally been caught.

Not someone who was sorry.

Someone who was trapped.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Patricia.

She suddenly found the table very interesting.

I looked at Lauren.

She avoided my eyes.

And then I looked back at Daniel.

“Who is Olivia?””

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

“It's not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

I actually did.

A small, empty laugh.

Because I had heard that sentence before.

Every person who was hiding something always started with the same words.

“It’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is,” I said.

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Richard stepped forward.

“She is the woman Daniel has been seeing for almost a year.””

The room exploded.

Not loudly.

Not with screaming.

With silence.

The kind of silence that happens when a person’s entire reality collapses.

I turned to Daniel.

“A year?””

He looked away.

That hurt more than if he had admitted it.

Because looking away meant he knew.

He knew exactly what he had done.

“You were cheating on me while I was pregnant?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Emily, listen—”

“No.””

My voice was sharper this time.

“No, you listen.””

My hands trembled as I pushed the document toward him.

“You had an account for leaving me.””

His face tightened.

“I wasn't sure what I was going to do.””

“You weren't sure?””

I stared at him.

“You weren't sure if you wanted to leave the woman carrying your child?””

He said nothing.

Richard looked disgusted.

“I found messages between them.””

Patricia immediately turned.

“Richard.””

“What?””

Her husband’s voice was cold.

“Are you defending him?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

She knew.

Maybe not every detail.

But enough.

I looked at Patricia.

“You knew.””

She looked offended.

“Don't accuse me.””

“You knew.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew your son was planning to leave me, and you still invited me here for Thanksgiving?””

Patricia lifted her chin.

“Daniel is an adult.””

“That’s your excuse?””

She crossed her arms.

“You need to understand something, Emily. Men make mistakes.””

I stared at her.

“Men make mistakes?””

The room became colder.

“You slapped me tonight.””

Her face tightened.

“That was an emotional moment.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That was a choice.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

Patricia didn't accidentally hurt me.

Daniel didn't accidentally betray me.

They made choices.

Again.

And again.

And again.

I turned back toward my husband.

“When were you going to tell me?””

Daniel looked miserable.

“After the baby was born.””

The answer was so cruel that for a moment I couldn't breathe.

“After the baby was born?””

He nodded slowly.

“I didn't want to stress you.””

I stared at him.

“You didn't want to stress me?””

I pointed toward my burned hand.

“You watched your mother slap me.””

I pointed toward the papers.

“You hid money from me.””

I touched my stomach.

“And you were planning to leave after I gave birth because that was more convenient?””

Daniel looked down.

“I was confused.””

“Confused people don't secretly move money.””

Silence.

“Confused people don't lie for a year.””

Silence.

“Confused people don't let their wives destroy themselves trying to save them.””

My voice broke.

And for the first time that night, Daniel looked ashamed.

But shame wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

Richard walked toward the window.

“I need to explain something else.””

I looked at him.

“There's more?””

His expression was grim.

“Yes.””

He picked up another document.

“When I discovered the affair, I started investigating Daniel’s finances.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“You had no right.””

Richard turned around.

“I had every right.””

His voice was firm.

“You were using family assets while hiding your financial problems.””

Daniel looked away.

Richard continued.

“What I found was worse than I expected.””

He placed another paper on the table.

“Daniel wasn't just saving money.””

I looked down.

“What was he doing?””

Richard took a breath.

“He was moving debt.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he transferred your shared financial obligations into accounts connected to you while protecting himself.””

My stomach dropped.

I didn't understand.

Then Richard explained.

“Several loans were taken out using information connected to your income.””

I stared.

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily, I was going to fix it.””

I looked at him.

“Did you use my name?””

He didn't answer.

“Daniel.””

His silence was enough.

I felt something inside me turn cold.

All those years.

All those sacrifices.

I thought I was standing beside my husband.

But maybe I had been standing in front of him.

Taking every hit.

Blocking every consequence.

While he prepared his escape.

Richard looked at me.

“Emily, I need you to know something.””

“What?””

“You are not financially responsible for everything Daniel created.””

I swallowed.

“But he told me we were married. That everything was shared.””

Richard nodded.

“That is exactly what he wanted you to believe.””

Daniel’s face turned red.

“Dad, stop acting like she's innocent.””

Everyone looked at him.

Even Patricia.

“What did you say?”” I whispered.

Daniel’s anger seemed to overcome his fear.

“You think you're perfect?””

My eyebrows lifted.

“Excuse me?””

“You always act like you saved me.””

The words hit me.

“You didn't save me, Emily.””

He laughed bitterly.

“You made me feel like I was failing.””

I stared at him.

For years, I had carried his shame.

And now he was handing it back to me.

“You’re blaming me?””

“I’m saying things between us were broken.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Things between us were difficult.””

I looked at him.

“But you chose betrayal.””

Daniel went quiet.

Richard looked at his son with disappointment.

“Enough.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Do you know what it's like living with someone who constantly reminds you of your mistakes?””

My chest tightened.

“I never reminded you.””

“You didn't have to.””

That sentence hurt.

Because I finally understood.

Daniel didn't hate me because I hurt him.

He hated me because I knew the truth about him.

He wanted someone who didn't know his failures.

Someone new.

Someone who only saw the version of himself he wanted to show.

Olivia.

The woman who didn't know about the debts.

The lies.

The excuses.

I slowly sat down.

My legs felt weak.

Richard moved toward me.

“Emily, you need medical attention.””

“I’m fine.””

“You're not.””

I looked at my hands.

The skin was red and painful.

But somehow, my heart hurt worse.

“I need to know one thing.””

Everyone waited.

I looked directly at Daniel.

“Did she know about me?””

Daniel froze.

That hesitation was enough.

My eyes widened.

“She knew.””

“Emily—”

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“She knew you were married.””

Daniel whispered:

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Does she know about the baby?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

“And she still wanted you?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my husband.

The man I had loved.

The man whose clothes I washed.

The man whose dreams I defended.

The man whose mistakes I buried.

And suddenly, I didn't recognize him.

I stood slowly.

“I need to leave.””

Daniel moved.

“Emily.””

I stepped back.

“Don't.””

His face fell.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

I grabbed my coat from the chair.

“You had a year to explain.””

The front door was only a few steps away.

Then Richard spoke.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

He held another envelope.

A smaller one.

“What is that?””

His expression changed.

“This is something I found after reviewing Daniel’s private messages.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of messages?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Messages between Daniel and Olivia about the baby.””

The room went completely still.

Daniel’s face turned pale.

I slowly reached for the envelope.

“What did they say?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Finally, he whispered:

“They weren't talking about leaving you.””

I opened the envelope.

“They were talking about making sure you never found out the truth.””

My fingers froze on the paper.

Because hidden inside those pages was a plan.

A plan my husband and another woman had created.

A plan that started before my baby was even born.

And the first line I read made my entire body go cold.

*“Once Emily signs the final documents, everything will belong to us.””*
