Chapter 7: The Woman Who Signed My Lies

I didn’t know what hurt more.

The fact that my father had lied to me.

Or the fact that he had spent eighteen years pretending those lies were love.

I stood in the middle of the living room holding the phone against my ear while everyone watched me.

Sarah looked terrified.

Vanessa looked confused.

Dad looked like a man waiting for a sentence.

And Emily…

Emily looked like she already knew exactly what was coming.

“Who is Laura Harper?”” I asked.

Emily didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I turned toward her.

“You know her.””

Her lips parted.

“Ethan—”

“No.””

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“I’m done hearing my name followed by excuses.””

The phone crackled.

The woman on the other end spoke again.

“Ethan, listen carefully. I don’t have much time.””

I stepped away from everyone.

“Why should I believe you?””

A long pause.

“Because I’m the reason your mother spent eighteen years searching for you.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

The woman continued.

“I signed documents that said Sarah abandoned you.””

My chest tightened.

“But I never saw her abandon you.””

The room felt frozen.

“What happened?””

The woman’s breathing became uneven.

“Your father came to me first.””

Dad immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

I looked at him.

“You said you didn’t know.””

“I didn’t know she was going to call.””

That wasn’t an answer.

And he knew it.

The woman continued.

“Daniel told me Sarah had left. He said he needed help making sure Ethan had a stable home.””

Sarah laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Stable.””

Nobody spoke.

“Why did you help him?”” I asked.

The woman’s voice shook.

“Because I believed him.””

A pause.

“Then I found out the truth.””

Emily suddenly moved.

She grabbed the phone from my hand.

I reacted instantly.

“What are you doing?””

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“Mom.””

Everyone heard it.

Mom.

The room went silent.

Emily stared at the phone.

Then she whispered:

“You shouldn’t have called him.””

She ended the call.

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

She placed the phone down.

“I knew my mother would eventually ruin everything.””

The words shocked me.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she sounded angry at the person exposing her.

“You’re not even sorry.””

Emily looked at me.

“I am sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re sorry you got caught.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Sarah.

“She was never supposed to have you.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Excuse me?””

Emily’s eyes filled with years of anger.

“You always got everything.””

Sarah stared at her.

“What?””

“Everyone loved you.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“You were the beautiful one. The kind one. The one who everyone wanted to help.””

I felt sick.

“So you stole her child because you were jealous?””

Emily looked at me.

“I wanted a family.””

“You had one.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I had nothing.””

For a second, I saw something human in her.

Then it disappeared.

“You don’t know what it’s like watching someone else get the life you wanted.””

Sarah shook her head.

“You could have asked for help.””

Emily looked at her.

“You would have helped me?””

“Yes.””

That answer seemed to hurt Emily more than anger would have.

“You would have forgiven me.””

Sarah didn’t respond.

Because she knew.

She probably would have.

That was the kind of person she seemed to be.

The kind of person who kept loving people who hurt her.

I turned toward Dad.

“Did you love her?””

The question surprised him.

“What?””

“Sarah.””

His face changed.

“Yes.””

The honesty made me angry.

“Then how did you do this?””

He looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed around the room.

“You were afraid. Emily was jealous. Vanessa didn’t know.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody was thinking about me.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

My phone buzzed again.

A message.

This time from Laura.

I looked at the screen.

There was an address.

And one sentence.

Come alone if you want the truth about the night you disappeared.

I stared at it.

Dad saw my face.

“Who sent that?””

I locked the phone.

“No one.””

He knew I was lying.

“Ethan.””

I walked toward the stairs.

“Where are you going?””

I stopped.

Then looked back.

“To find out who I was before you decided for me.””

The next morning, I drove to the address Laura sent.

It was an old house outside the city.

Small.

Quiet.

The kind of place nobody noticed.

I almost turned around.

Then the front door opened.

An elderly woman stood there.

She looked tired.

But kind.

“You’re Ethan.””

I nodded.

“You’re Laura?””

She stepped aside.

“Yes.””

Inside, the house smelled like old books and coffee.

There were papers everywhere.

Photos.

Folders.

Records.

A whole hidden history.

“You kept all this?””

She nodded.

“I knew one day someone would need proof.””

She walked to a table.

On it was a file.

My name was written across the front.

Ethan Carter.

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

“The truth.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Hospital records.

Court papers.

Photos.

And one thing that made my hands shake.

A police report.

Date:

The night I disappeared.

I looked up.

“You knew.””

Laura nodded.

“I knew from the beginning.””

“What happened?””

She sat down.

“Your father and Emily planned to take you.””

I stopped breathing.

“Planned?””

She nodded.

“Emily wanted Sarah to suffer.””

My stomach twisted.

“But why?””

Laura looked at me.

“Because Sarah had something Emily wanted.””

“What?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“You.””

I looked back at the papers.

“But why involve Dad?””

Laura sighed.

“Because Daniel was angry.””

“At Sarah?””

“Yes.””

I turned another page.

There was a statement.

My father’s signature.

I read it.

My hands went cold.

It wasn’t a custody agreement.

It was a confession.

A sentence stood out:

I agree that Ethan will remain with Daniel Carter and Emily Harper until further legal action is taken.

But below it was another note.

Written by someone else.

The child was never legally transferred.

My heart stopped.

“They kidnapped me.””

Laura didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I closed the file.

“What happened after?””

Laura looked toward the window.

“After that, Daniel realized what Emily had done.””

“And?””

“He wanted to undo it.””

I laughed.

“He had eighteen years.””

Laura looked at me.

“Ethan.””

“What?””

Her expression turned serious.

“There is something else you need to know.””

I waited.

“Your father didn’t just hide Sarah from you.””

She pushed another envelope toward me.

“He hid this too.””

I picked it up.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father’s.

The envelope was sealed.

“What is it?””

Laura whispered:

“A letter Daniel wrote to you when you were five years old.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t I get it?””

Laura looked away.

“Because Emily destroyed every letter that reminded you of Sarah.””

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“And this one?””

“She missed one.””

I opened it.

The first line made my heart stop.

Ethan,

If you ever read this, it means I failed to protect you.

I kept reading.

And the final sentence destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

May you like

I was going to tell you the truth.

But Emily threatened to make sure you never saw either of us again.
