Chapter 6: The Secret My Father Buried

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My brain refused to accept it.

I looked at Sarah.

She was staring at the paper.

Her face had changed.

“What?”” I whispered.

She took the letter from my hand.

“I’ve never seen that.””

I pointed.

“The handwriting.””

She shook her head.

“That wasn’t there before.””

My heart started racing.

“Someone added this?””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I stood up.

My father.

My father had written this.

Or someone pretending to be him.

Either option was impossible.

I walked downstairs.

Everyone was still in the living room.

Emily.

Dad.

Vanessa.

All watching me.

I held up the letter.

“What is this?””

Dad froze.

His eyes went directly to the paper.

Then his face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You found it.””

The words felt like a punch.

I stared at him.

“You knew about this?””

Emily looked at him.

“Daniel.””

But he didn’t respond.

I walked closer.

“You knew.””

He sat down.

Slowly.

“I was hoping you would never see that.””

My anger disappeared.

Replaced by something colder.

“Why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because I failed you.””

I waited.

No excuses.

No lies.

Just the truth.

Finally, he spoke.

“After Emily helped me get custody, I thought everything would be okay.””

Sarah stood behind me.

“You thought stealing my child would be okay?””

Dad flinched.

“I was angry.””

“At me?””

“At everyone.””

He rubbed his face.

“I thought Sarah was going to leave. I thought I would lose Ethan.””

“So you took him first.””

His silence was devastating.

I felt like I was watching a stranger confess.

Not my father.

A stranger.

“What happened after?””

Dad looked at Emily.

“She wanted to keep him.””

My eyes moved to her.

Emily looked away.

Dad continued.

“At first, she said she was helping. She said she could provide things I couldn’t.””

Sarah whispered:

“And then?””

Dad swallowed.

“Then she started acting like Ethan was hers.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“That’s not true.””

Dad looked at her.

“It is.””

For the first time, Emily looked afraid.

Dad continued.

“She changed the records. She created documents.””

My breathing stopped.

“You knew?””

“I found out later.””

“Later?””

He looked ashamed.

“By then, everything had gone too far.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You let me live with fake records?””

“I was trying to fix it.””

“You keep saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“But you never fixed anything.””

Dad looked at me.

“I know.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I didn’t know all of this.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“When I married Daniel, he told me Sarah abandoned Ethan.””

Sarah looked at her.

“And you believed him?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I did.””

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I believed she meant it.

But it didn’t make the pain disappear.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone went silent.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Ethan?””

I froze.

I knew that voice.

Emily.

But Emily was standing across the room.

My eyes lifted.

She looked confused.

The voice continued.

“Don’t trust anyone in that house.””

I slowly moved the phone away.

The person standing in front of me wasn’t the one calling.

Then who was?

“Who is this?”” I asked.

The woman on the phone hesitated.

Then whispered:

“I’m the woman who signed your fake birth certificate.””

My blood ran cold.

“Emily?””

“No.””

The voice shook.

“My name is Laura Harper.””

I looked at Emily.

Her face had gone white.

The woman on the phone continued.

“Emily is my daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

“She used my identity to create the documents.””

I stepped away.

“Why are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I know where the real evidence is.””

Dad moved toward me.

“Hang up.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about this too?””

“No.””

His voice sounded desperate.

“Ethan, please.””

The woman on the phone whispered:

“Your father didn’t just hide your mother.””

I held my breath.

“He hid what happened the night you disappeared.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What happened that night?””

The voice became quieter.

“The night you were taken…”

A pause.

Then the woman said:

“Your father wasn’t the one who carried you away.””

I looked at Dad.

Everyone was silent.

“Then who was?””

The woman answered:

“Your mother’s sister.””

I looked at Emily.

Her face had no color.

And then Laura said the words that changed everything.

“She didn’t steal you because she wanted a child.””

May you like

A pause.

“She stole you because she wanted Sarah to lose everything.””
