Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Disappearance

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Sarah.

Not me.

Not even Richard.

He stood in the middle of the abandoned office like he had just announced something ordinary.

Like he hadn’t just claimed responsibility for destroying my entire life.

I stared at him.

“You.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“I know this is a lot to process.””

I almost laughed.

“A lot?””

My voice echoed through the empty room.

“You erased my identity.””

His expression remained calm.

“I corrected a situation that was already falling apart.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“You stole a child.””

Richard looked at her.

“No, Sarah.””

His tone was almost gentle.

“That’s the story you’ve told yourself for eighteen years.””

Her face tightened.

“Don’t.””

Richard ignored her.

“You were young. Daniel was scared. Emily was desperate. Everyone made choices.””

I looked at him.

“You’re talking like this was an accident.””

He looked back at me.

“It wasn’t.””

The honesty shocked me.

Richard walked toward the old desk.

“You want the truth, Ethan?””

I didn’t answer.

He continued anyway.

“Your life was never destroyed because one person made one bad decision.””

He placed his hand on the desk.

“It happened because everyone involved believed they were entitled to decide what was best for you.””

The words hit harder because they were true.

Even from him.

Especially from him.

“You included yourself.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Sarah looked disgusted.

“At least you admit it.””

Richard looked at her.

“I do.””

That somehow made him worse.

A person who knew exactly what they had done.

A person who didn’t need excuses.

“Why?”” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Because I saw an opportunity.””

The room went quiet.

I felt my stomach twist.

“An opportunity?””

“Yes.””

He didn’t look away.

“When I met Daniel, he was desperate. He wanted custody of you. Emily wanted to become the mother you knew. Sarah wanted you back.””

He shrugged.

“Everyone wanted something.””

I clenched my jaw.

“And what did you want?””

Richard smiled.

“Control.””

The answer was so simple.

So empty.

I hated that I believed him.

Sarah stepped closer.

“You ruined three lives.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I created one.””

I felt anger rise through me.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“Why?””

“Because I was a person.””

“Yes.””

His eyes narrowed.

“And that’s exactly why it worked.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Richard walked toward a filing cabinet.

“People think identity is something you’re born with.””

He pulled out an old folder.

“It isn’t.””

He dropped it onto the desk.

“Identity is paperwork. Records. Names. Signatures.””

He tapped the folder.

“I changed enough documents, and Ethan Carter became whoever we needed him to be.””

My hands went cold.

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies.

Hospital records.

School registration forms.

Medical files.

Every year of my life.

Altered.

Changed.

Manipulated.

My name was there.

But the history behind it wasn’t mine.

“You did all this?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He leaned closer.

“Because nobody questions a story that looks official.””

I looked at Sarah.

She looked devastated.

“I spent years trying to prove I was his mother.””

Richard looked at her.

“And I spent years making sure nobody believed you.””

The cruelty of the statement made my hands shake.

I turned away.

I couldn’t look at him.

“Did my father know?””

Richard was silent.

That pause mattered.

“Answer me.””

Richard sighed.

“Daniel knew enough.””

My heart sank.

“Enough?””

“He knew the documents were questionable.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

Of course.

Of course there was more.

My entire life was built from people knowing just enough to stop themselves from doing the right thing.

“He could have stopped you.””

“Yes.””

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

The answer hurt.

I looked at Richard.

“What about Emily?””

A small smile appeared.

“She was useful.””

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Emily thought she was in control.””

Richard looked amused.

“She believed she was getting the child she always wanted.””

“But she wasn’t?””

Richard shook his head.

“She was getting a role.””

The words hung in the air.

“She was never Ethan’s mother.””

Sarah looked at me.

I knew what she was thinking.

Neither was he.

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Richard glanced toward the window.

For the first time, his calm expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

Someone had arrived.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

Richard didn’t answer.

Sarah moved closer.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t trust him.””

Richard smiled.

“Interesting advice from someone who spent eighteen years waiting for a son who didn’t remember her.””

Sarah flinched.

I hated that he knew exactly where to hurt people.

The front door opened.

A voice called from the hallway.

“Richard?””

Everyone froze.

I knew that voice.

My father.

Daniel walked into the office.

He stopped when he saw Richard.

Then me.

Then Sarah.

His face collapsed.

“You found him.””

Richard smiled.

“Yes.””

Dad looked terrified.

Not because I was there.

Because Richard was.

“What are you doing here?”” Dad asked.

Richard laughed softly.

“Isn’t it obvious?””

Dad stepped forward.

“Leave him alone.””

I stared at him.

“Him?””

Dad looked at me.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t protect me now.””

Richard watched us.

Enjoying it.

“Tell him, Daniel.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“Richard.””

“Tell him what happened after you discovered the truth.””

I looked at my father.

“What happened?””

Dad didn’t answer.

Richard leaned against the desk.

“Tell him about the night you tried to take Ethan back.””

My heart stopped.

“You tried?””

Dad looked down.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“Then why didn’t you?””

His voice broke.

“Because it was too late.””

Richard smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Because he found out something.””

“What?””

Richard picked up another file.

And placed it in front of me.

“The reason your father stopped fighting.””

I opened it.

Inside was one page.

One sentence.

My eyes locked onto the words.

A private investigator’s report.

Subject: Sarah Mitchell.

Finding:

Sarah Mitchell is not Ethan Carter’s biological mother.

I looked up.

Sarah had gone completely still.

May you like

And Richard whispered:

“That was the lie that made everyone believe they had won.””
