Chapter 11: The DNA Test That Changed Everything

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the traffic outside.

Not the voices around me.

Not even my own breathing.

I only saw the paper.

Sarah Mitchell is not Ethan Carter’s biological mother.

The sentence stared back at me.

After everything.

After all the lies.

After all the secrets.

There was another one.

I looked at Sarah.

She looked devastated.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just broken.

“Is it true?””

The question came out quietly.

Sarah opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That hurt more than an answer.

“Sarah.””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

The words shocked me.

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head.

“I never took a DNA test.””

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.””

I looked at him.

“You forged it.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I created evidence.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Richard, stop.””

Richard turned toward him.

“You’re the last person who gets to tell me to stop.””

Dad went silent.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Finally, Dad spoke.

“After Emily and Richard took you, I started looking for a way to undo everything.””

I stared at him.

“You said you tried.””

“I did.””

“Too late.””

He lowered his head.

“Yes.””

He continued.

“I hired someone to investigate.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Daniel.””

But Dad kept going.

“They found Sarah.””

My heart tightened.

“She was alive.””

Sarah looked at him.

“You knew?””

Dad nodded.

“I knew.””

Her face broke.

“But you never told me.””

“I was trying to get Ethan back first.””

The pain in her eyes was impossible to ignore.

“Without me?””

Dad had no answer.

He looked ashamed.

“The investigator found Richard’s documents.””

He looked at the paper.

“But then Richard showed me this.””

I pointed.

“The fake DNA report.””

Dad nodded.

“He told me Sarah wasn’t your biological mother.””

I looked at Sarah.

“And you believed him?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

Richard interrupted.

“And that uncertainty was enough.””

I turned toward him.

“You used doubt.””

“Yes.””

“Against everyone.””

“Yes.””

He said it like he was explaining a business strategy.

I felt sick.

“So what is the truth?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Sarah walked toward me.

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at her.

She took a shaky breath.

“When I gave birth to you, I was never given the final paperwork.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel and I weren’t married.””

Dad looked away.

Sarah continued.

“The hospital had mistakes. Records were delayed.””

She touched the photograph.

“But I know you are my son.””

“How?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was there.””

Her voice cracked.

“I held you.””

I wanted to believe her.

But after everything…

Believing felt dangerous.

Richard saw my hesitation.

“That’s exactly why I won.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Because after enough lies, people stop trusting the truth.””

The sentence bothered me.

Because it was true.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood at the entrance.

Older.

Carrying a folder.

Sarah froze.

“No.””

The woman looked at her.

“Hello, Sarah.””

I looked at Dad.

“Who is that?””

His face went pale.

The woman stepped inside.

“My name is Dr. Elaine Parker.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Surprise.

“I thought you were gone.””

She looked at him.

“I thought you would never be exposed.””

She walked toward me.

“I was the doctor who delivered Ethan.””

My heart stopped.

Sarah grabbed the edge of the desk.

“You kept records?””

Elaine nodded.

“I did.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Elaine looked at him.

“I understand exactly.””

She handed me a folder.

“This is the original hospital file.””

My hands shook as I took it.

Inside were records untouched.

Real records.

My eyes moved down the page.

Mother:

Sarah Mitchell.

I stopped.

Below it:

Father:

Daniel Carter.

I couldn’t breathe.

The truth was finally written somewhere.

Not hidden.

Not changed.

Not manipulated.

Just there.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Dad closed his eyes.

Richard looked furious.

I looked at him.

“You lied.””

He stared back.

Then his expression changed.

“You think this proves everything?””

I frowned.

“What?””

He smiled.

A cold, confident smile.

“Look at the date.””

I looked down.

The hospital record date.

Then the custody papers.

Something was wrong.

The dates overlapped.

Impossible.

My eyes widened.

Elaine’s face changed.

Because she saw it too.

Richard whispered:

“You weren’t taken when you thought you were.””

May you like

The room went silent.

“You disappeared six months earlier.””
