Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Curtain
The ballroom doors closed.
Nobody left.
Nobody dared.
The wedding reception had become something else entirely.
A place where secrets were dragged into the light.
A place where every person who had lied was forced to stand in the truth.
I stared at the contract in front of me.
My signature.
My name.
A document I had never touched.
“How?””
The word came out quietly.
“How is this possible?””
My father took the paper from the table.
His hands tightened around it.
“I thought I destroyed this.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
His silence answered.
“Dad.””
He looked broken.
“I knew someone had copied your information.””
“Someone?””
I laughed.
“You knew someone stole my identity.””
He flinched.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps using that sentence.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I know.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You all decide what I can handle. What I should know. What I should feel.””
I pointed at the contract.
“You took away my choice.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
My father lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
Not because he admitted it.
Because I had spent my entire life believing my father was incapable of being wrong.
“I made a mistake.””
I closed my eyes.
Another mistake.
Another person asking me to forgive something they should never have done.
“What happened?””
My father sighed.
“Before you met Daniel, your company was targeted.””
“By his father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your technology threatened one of his investments.””
I looked at the contract.
“And this?””
He swallowed.
“Your name was used to create a fake partnership.””
“With Whitmore Holdings?””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“So they could control my company.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“My father was desperate.””
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“I found out last year.””
“And you stayed.””
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t know how to get you out.””
I stared.
“You stayed.””
Again.
That was the only thing that mattered.
He could explain.
He could apologize.
He could cry.
But he stayed.
“You watched me sleep next to you while knowing your family was trying to take everything from me.””
Daniel looked like he had been punched.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“You weren’t fixing it.””
I shook my head.
“You were surviving it.””
He had no answer.
Then Chloe spoke.
Quietly.
“I told him.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
Chloe looked exhausted.
“I told Daniel because I thought he would convince you.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Convince me to do what?””
Chloe looked away.
“To sell.””
I laughed.
There it was.
The simple truth beneath years of manipulation.
Money.
Control.
Power.
“You thought I would just hand it over.””
Eleanor spoke.
“You didn’t understand the situation.””
I looked at her.
“I understood perfectly.””
“No, you didn’t.””
She stepped forward.
“You were young.””
“I was twenty-nine.””
“You were emotional.””
“I was successful.””
Her expression hardened.
“You were lucky.””
I smiled.
“That’s what you always wanted me to believe.””
The room was silent.
Because everyone knew.
Eleanor wanted me small.
And I had spent years trying to prove I deserved to exist.
My father’s lawyer interrupted.
“There is one more issue.””
Nobody moved.
“What?””
He looked at Daniel.
“Mr. Whitmore wasn’t only receiving money.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
The lawyer opened another folder.
“We found payments made from an account connected to Whitmore Holdings.””
“To me?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked confused.
“For what?””
The lawyer placed a document down.
“Access.””
My stomach tightened.
“Access to what?””
The lawyer looked at me.
“Your company’s internal systems.””
I stared at Daniel.
“No.””
He shook his head immediately.
“I never gave them access.””
The lawyer didn’t respond.
Instead, he turned the laptop around.
A list appeared.
Dates.
Times.
Login records.
My company’s security system.
And one account.
Daniel Whitmore.
I felt something inside me break.
Because this was the proof.
Not rumors.
Not accusations.
Not misunderstandings.
Proof.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Emma, I swear.””
I stared at the screen.
“How many times?””
His voice cracked.
“What?””
“How many times did you access my company?””
“I don’t know.””
The answer destroyed me.
Because if he didn’t know…
It meant there were many.
I turned away.
My father reached for my shoulder.
I moved away.
Not because I didn’t love him.
Because I couldn’t handle another person’s protection.
I needed the truth.
Only the truth.
Then my phone rang.
The screen showed a number I recognized.
My company’s head of security.
I answered.
“Marcus?””
His voice was urgent.
“Emma, you need to leave immediately.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“We found another file.””
“What file?””
A pause.
Then:
“The original ownership documents.””
I looked around.
“What about them?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Your company wasn’t just funded by your father.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
“Emma…”
His voice shook.
“Your company was originally registered under another name.””
I felt cold.
“What name?””
The entire ballroom disappeared.
May you like
Because I already knew the answer before he said it.
“Whitmore.””
