Chapter 6: The Woman Who Built the Trap
The ballroom became a place of ghosts.
That was the only way I could describe it.
The same room where people had laughed an hour ago.
The same room where Chloe had smiled while pretending to be innocent.
The same room where I thought I was celebrating a family joining together.
Now it felt like a courtroom.
Everyone waiting for someone to confess.
I looked at Eleanor.
My mother-in-law.
The woman who had spent three years making me feel like an outsider.
She stood perfectly still.
But her eyes betrayed her.
She knew.
She knew the video existed.
“Eleanor,” my father said.
His voice was colder than I had ever heard.
She lifted her chin.
“I don’t know what you think you saw.””
I laughed.
It wasn’t a happy sound.
“Of course you don’t.””
She looked at me.
“You should be careful, Emma.””
There it was.
The old Eleanor.
The woman who believed she could intimidate everyone.
“You’ve always been emotional.””
I stared at her.
“Emotional?””
She smiled slightly.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You destroyed my reputation.””
“I protected my family.””
“You tried to ruin me.””
“I tried to protect my son.””
Daniel flinched.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t understand what you’ve done.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Eleanor sighed.
“You were always too weak.””
That sentence broke something.
Because it revealed everything.
Daniel had not been the mastermind.
But he had been part of it.
A piece on someone else’s chessboard.
My father’s lawyer stepped forward.
“Mrs. Whitmore, we have records showing you accessed private company files.””
Eleanor laughed.
“Records can be manipulated.””
The lawyer nodded.
“True.””
He opened another folder.
“But not security footage.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
The lawyer continued.
“You entered the building using an access code assigned to your son.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You used my access?””
She ignored him.
My hands curled into fists.
“So that’s why.””
Everyone looked at me.
“That’s why you were so confident.””
Eleanor frowned.
“What?””
“You weren’t trying to find the ring.””
My voice grew stronger.
“You wanted everyone focused on me.””
Chloe looked away.
I saw it.
Confirmation.
“You created a scene.””
I looked at Chloe.
“You accused me.””
Then Eleanor.
“You destroyed my dress.””
Then Daniel.
“And you all thought I would stand there and apologize.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew.
They knew I was right.
My father came beside me.
“Emma.””
I nodded.
“I want the truth.””
He looked at the lawyers.
They understood.
The first lawyer opened another file.
“Mrs. Whitmore’s financial situation has changed significantly over the past year.””
Eleanor’s expression tightened.
“That is irrelevant.””
“No,” my father said.
“It is the entire reason.””
The lawyer continued.
“Several investments connected to the Whitmore family failed.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“I didn’t know.””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Because you couldn’t handle knowing.””
That sentence revealed more than she intended.
Daniel whispered:
“You were losing everything.””
She looked away.
“We were trying to save the family.””
“With my company?””
Silence.
Then Eleanor said:
“You had more than enough.””
My chest tightened.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You think I owed you?””
She looked at me.
“You married my son.””
I stared at her.
There it was.
The truth.
To Eleanor, I wasn’t a person.
I was an opportunity.
A resource.
A solution.
Daniel looked sick.
“Mom…”
She turned toward him.
“You were supposed to convince her to sell.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked at me.
I saw the guilt.
The terrible, unbearable guilt.
“What?””
I whispered.
The room went silent.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No, tell me I misunderstood.””
He couldn’t.
Because he hadn’t.
Three years.
Our entire marriage.
Every argument.
Every time he asked about my company.
Every time he said he was worried about my stress.
It wasn’t concern.
It was information.
“You married me because of my company.””
“No!””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“No, Emma. I loved you before I knew.””
“Before you knew what?””
He had no answer.
Because the question wasn’t when he loved me.
The question was when he stopped choosing me.
Chloe suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
A broken laugh.
Almost hysterical.
“You really think this was all about money?””
Eleanor turned.
“Chloe.””
“No.””
Chloe looked at me.
“You deserve to know.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
But she continued.
“Your husband didn’t leak your files because my mother forced him.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
Chloe smiled sadly.
“He started it.””
Daniel whispered:
“Chloe, stop.””
“No.””
She looked around the room.
“You want the truth? Fine.””
She pointed at Daniel.
“He came to me first.””
The world seemed to stop.
I looked at my husband.
He didn’t deny it.
And that was worse than anything.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
His eyes filled with regret.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect me?””
He stepped forward.
“Emma, please understand.””
“No.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“Tell me the real reason.””
Daniel looked down.
And when he finally spoke, his words destroyed the last piece of hope I had left.
“I found out something about your company.””
A pause.
“Something that could destroy you.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked at the crowd.
Then back at me.
“Your company wasn’t built the way you think.””
My heart stopped.
Because suddenly, for the first time that night…
Daniel wasn’t looking like a guilty man.
He was looking like someone who was afraid.
May you like
And then he whispered:
“Emma, your father never told you the truth about where your company’s first funding came from.””
