Chapter 10: The Signature I Forgot
The document trembled in my hand.
Not because I was afraid of Chloe.
Not because I believed her.
Because somewhere deep inside my memory, a door had opened.
A door I had spent years keeping locked.
The signature.
My signature.
At the bottom of the agreement.
My name written in my own handwriting.
I stared at it until the ink blurred.
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth.
Chloe watched me carefully.
“Yes.””
I looked up.
“You’re lying.””
Her expression didn’t change.
“Am I?””
I hated that question.
Because it sounded exactly like something I would ask.
Not a threat.
Not an insult.
A challenge.
A request for proof.
My father stepped forward.
“Emma, don’t make any decisions based on this.””
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Because there are things you don’t know.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s the problem, Dad.””
I held up the document.
“Apparently, everyone knows things except me.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could.
The ballroom had gone silent again.
But this silence felt different.
The first silence was humiliation.
This one was realization.
I looked at Chloe.
“Tell me.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emma—”
“No.””
I didn’t look at him.
“For once, I want the truth from the person who has been trying to destroy me.””
Chloe swallowed.
Then nodded.
“Three years ago, before you met Daniel, I was building a company.””
I frowned.
“You?””
“Yes.””
Her eyes moved toward the floor.
“I know what everyone thinks of me.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“The spoiled daughter. The rich girl who never worked for anything.””
She looked back at me.
“But that wasn’t always true.””
The room remained still.
“My father controlled everything in our family.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
“Chloe.””
“No, Mom.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t get to silence me anymore.””
That was the first time I had ever seen Chloe stand against her mother.
And somehow, it made her more human.
“I created the technology,” Chloe continued.
“The original concept. The early designs. The first prototype.””
I looked at the document.
“Then why is my name there?””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“Because my father stole it.””
A chill moved through me.
“He told me women couldn’t run companies.””
She laughed bitterly.
“He said investors would never trust a woman with the Whitmore name because they only saw us as socialites.””
Eleanor looked away.
“So he used you.””
Chloe nodded.
“He used me.””
Then she looked at me.
“And then he used you.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“How?””
She took a breath.
“Your father found out what happened.””
I looked at Richard.
He said nothing.
“He knew my father had stolen my work,” Chloe said.
“He knew the technology was valuable.””
She paused.
“And he knew you were brilliant.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Chloe.””
“No.””
She pointed at him.
“You don’t get to pretend you saved her.””
My father looked away.
I felt something break inside.
Because she was right.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone believed they were protecting me.
But nobody asked what I wanted.
“So what happened?”” I asked.
Chloe looked at me.
“Your father approached me.””
The room went quiet.
“He offered a deal.””
“What deal?””
“He said he could help me take back control.””
My father whispered:
“Chloe.””
But she continued.
“He said the company needed a new identity.””
I looked down.
“And that identity was me.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
My heart pounded.
“So I was used as a front?””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
“You were supposed to be the future.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Chloe looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“You were the only person my father couldn’t manipulate.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
“You knew me?””
She nodded.
“Before Daniel.””
That shocked me.
“What?””
“I saw your work.””
She smiled sadly.
“You don’t remember, but I attended one of your early presentations.””
My mind searched.
A conference.
A crowded room.
A woman standing near the back.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you say anything?””
“Because my father warned me.””
“About what?””
Her expression darkened.
“He said if I ever told you the truth, he would destroy everything.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked completely lost.
“So where does Daniel fit into this?””
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
I looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know about the original company.””
“Not what I asked.””
He swallowed.
“I was sent to get close to you.””
The room disappeared.
I heard the words.
But I couldn’t process them.
“What?””
Daniel looked broken.
“My father wanted information.””
My voice became quiet.
“You mean before we met?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
He shook his head.
“Not at first.””
“When?””
He looked down.
“After I fell in love with you.””
A painful laugh escaped me.
“You fell in love with me after you were sent to spy on me?””
“I didn’t expect to love you.””
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“It doesn’t.””
For once, he wasn’t defending himself.
He wasn’t explaining.
He was accepting the damage.
And somehow that hurt more.
Because I wanted him to fight.
I wanted him to prove I was wrong.
But he couldn’t.
Because I wasn’t.
My father stepped forward.
“Emma, listen to me.””
I turned.
“What?””
“The company became yours.””
“After you hid the truth.””
“Yes.””
“After you let me believe something that wasn’t true.””
“Yes.””
He looked devastated.
“But I never wanted you to feel like you didn’t earn it.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“I spent my whole life trying to escape being Richard Hayes’ daughter.””
My voice shook.
“I wanted something that was mine.””
His eyes filled.
“And it was.””
“No.””
I held up the document.
“Was it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Chloe spoke quietly.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at her.
She reached into her bag.
“This is why the ring disappeared.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She placed another file on the table.
“The Matriarch Ring was never stolen.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Chloe looked at Eleanor.
“My mother hid it.””
Eleanor’s face went pale.
“That’s insane.””
Chloe opened the file.
“Security footage.””
The lawyer took it.
A moment later, the video appeared on a screen.
Everyone watched.
Eleanor entering the private room.
Eleanor opening the jewelry box.
Eleanor removing the ring.
The room exploded.
I didn’t look at Eleanor.
I looked at Daniel.
Because suddenly, I understood.
The missing ring.
The accusation.
The scene.
It was all a distraction.
A way to force me into revealing something.
The company.
The card.
The documents.
Everything.
Chloe had not created the trap.
She had been trapped too.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Marcus.
*Emma, we found the person who ordered the attack on your company’s servers.*
I opened it.
A name appeared.
And my entire body went cold.
Because it wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Eleanor.
It wasn’t Chloe.
It was someone none of us had suspected.
Someone who had been smiling beside me all night.
May you like
Someone who had known the truth from the beginning.
My father.
