Chapter 5: The Husband I Didn’t Know
I didn’t confront Daniel immediately.
That surprised even me.
Three months earlier, I would have.
I would have demanded answers.
I would have cried.
I would have begged him to tell me I was wrong.
But something changes when the person you love hurts you enough times.
You stop asking why.
You start looking for proof.
I walked back into the ballroom with my phone still in my hand.
Everyone was watching.
The guests.
The lawyers.
Chloe.
Eleanor.
Daniel.
Especially Daniel.
My husband looked at me like he already knew.
Like he could see the truth written across my face.
My father stepped forward.
“Emma?””
I shook my head.
“Not yet.””
He understood.
That was one of the things I loved about my father.
He never forced me.
He never decided for me.
He simply stood beside me.
Daniel approached again.
“Emma, please.””
I looked at him.
“How much?””
His face changed.
“What?””
“How much money did you receive?””
The silence was immediate.
Eleanor looked confused.
Chloe looked terrified.
Daniel went completely still.
“Who told you that?””
I laughed softly.
“That’s your answer?””
His eyes dropped.
And that was when I knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
My husband had secrets.
Big ones.
“Daniel,” I said quietly, “tell me the truth.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
Not a single person moved.
Daniel looked around the room.
“I need to speak with Emma privately.””
My father stepped between us.
“No.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“This is between my wife and me.””
My father’s voice remained calm.
“She stopped being alone when you stopped protecting her.””
Daniel looked down.
Because he knew.
He knew he had no argument.
Finally, he spoke.
“The money wasn’t for me.””
Chloe immediately looked relieved.
I noticed.
“So someone else?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Emma, listen.””
“No. You listen.””
My voice echoed.
“You have spent three years telling me your family was difficult.””
I pointed toward Chloe.
“You told me she was just insecure.””
I looked at Eleanor.
“You told me your mother would eventually accept me.””
Then I looked at him.
“But all this time, you were hiding something.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was trying to fix something.””
“Fix what?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the worst answer.
Because silence always tells the truth.
My father’s lawyer stepped forward.
“Mr. Whitmore, perhaps we should explain what we found.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
The lawyer raised an eyebrow.
“No?””
Daniel looked desperate.
“I said no.””
I watched him.
And for the first time, I wondered if I had ever truly known him.
The lawyer opened a folder.
“We traced several payments made over the last eighteen months.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Stop.””
My father looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The lawyer continued.
“The payments came from accounts connected to Mr. Whitmore.””
Chloe whispered:
“Daniel…”
He turned toward her.
And the anger in his face shocked me.
“Don’t.””
She stepped back.
I noticed that.
Chloe was afraid of him.
Not because he was powerful.
Because she knew something.
Something she had been hiding.
“Daniel,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Were you working with Chloe?””
His silence lasted too long.
Then:
“No.””
A pause.
“But I knew she was planning something.””
The room exploded.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Guests whispered.
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked broken.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“You knew she wanted to hurt me.””
“No.””
“You knew she hated me.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was trying to destroy my marriage.””
Daniel looked away.
And that was enough.
My eyes burned.
“You let me walk into this.””
“I thought I could stop it.””
“You thought?””
My voice cracked.
“You thought you could control your sister?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emma—”
I moved back.
He stopped.
That hurt him.
Good.
Because I needed him to understand.
“I spent three years defending you.””
I touched my wedding ring.
“I defended you when your family insulted me.””
A tear fell.
“I defended you when everyone told me you would never choose me.””
Another tear.
“And the entire time, you were proving them right.””
Daniel looked destroyed.
But I wasn’t finished.
My phone buzzed again.
I looked down.
A new message.
This one had an attachment.
A video.
My security director wrote:
*You need to see this.*
I opened it.
The screen showed a hallway.
My company’s private office.
A man walking inside.
A man I recognized instantly.
Because I had seen that face every morning for years.
Daniel.
The video timestamp was from three weeks earlier.
Three weeks before my wedding reception.
Three weeks before tonight.
He entered my office.
And he wasn’t alone.
The camera shifted.
The second person walked into view.
I stopped breathing.
Because the person standing beside my husband was the last person I expected.
My father looked at my face.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t speak.
I simply turned the phone toward him.
His expression changed.
Because he knew the person too.
The person who had helped Daniel access my company.
The person who had betrayed my trust.
My father whispered:
“No…”
May you like
Then he said the name.
“Eleanor.””
