Chapter 4: The Name on the Screen

I stared at the message until the letters blurred.

Daniel Whitmore.

The name on my screen didn’t belong there.

Not in that conversation.

Not connected to those words.

Not connected to betrayal.

My fingers went cold around the phone.

For three years, I had accepted that Daniel was weak.

That he was afraid of his family.

That he avoided conflict because he didn’t know how to handle it.

But a thief?

A spy?

Someone secretly feeding information about my company to the outside world?

No.

My mind rejected it before my heart even had a chance to break.

“Emma?””

My father’s voice pulled me back.

I locked my phone quickly.

Too quickly.

And he noticed.

Of course he noticed.

Richard Hayes had built an empire by noticing things other people missed.

“What happened?”” he asked.

“Nothing.””

His expression didn’t change.

“Don’t lie to me.””

I looked away.

Not because I wanted to hide from him.

Because saying it out loud would make it real.

Across the ballroom, Daniel was still standing beside Chloe.

His face was pale.

His family was falling apart around him.

And somehow, I was still looking for a reason to believe he wasn’t the person hurting me.

My father lowered his voice.

“Emma.””

I swallowed.

“Not here.””

He studied me for a moment.

Then nodded.

“Fine.””

That single word carried a promise.

We would talk.

Soon.

But before I could move, Daniel approached.

His eyes were different now.

The confidence was gone.

The certainty.

The belief that everything could be explained away.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His jaw tightened.

“I need to talk to you.””

I almost laughed.

Three years.

Three years of me asking him to talk.

Three years of asking him to listen.

And now, when everything was collapsing around him, he suddenly needed a conversation.

“You should have wanted to talk before tonight.””

“Please.””

That word stopped me.

Because Daniel Whitmore almost never begged.

I looked at my father.

He nodded slightly.

Not permission.

A warning.

Be careful.

I stepped away from the crowd.

Daniel followed me toward the empty hallway outside the ballroom.

The music from the reception continued behind us.

A celebration.

A wedding.

A room full of people pretending everything was beautiful.

While my marriage was dying ten feet away.

Daniel stopped near the window.

“I don’t know what you saw.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why does my security team have your name?””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“What?””

I held up my phone.

“Explain.””

He stared at the screen.

Then looked back at me.

“Emma, I swear to you—”

“Don’t.””

His mouth closed.

“Don’t swear.””

My voice was quieter than I expected.

“That used to work on me.””

His expression softened.

“I never betrayed you.””

“Then explain.””

He looked toward the ballroom.

Toward his family.

Toward the disaster he helped create.

“I need time.””

I felt something inside me go completely still.

“Time?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, my company’s private files were leaked.””

His eyes widened.

“I didn’t know that.””

“Someone did.””

“I said I need time because I need to understand.””

I stared at him.

“You understand everything when it’s about your family.””

“That’s not fair.””

I smiled.

A sad, empty smile.

“Fair?””

I stepped closer.

“Tonight, your sister accused me of stealing. Your mother destroyed my dress. You handed them my purse.””

His face tightened.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.””

I pointed toward the ballroom.

“This was a choice.””

Daniel looked away.

And that hurt.

Because even now, he couldn’t look at what he had done.

A door opened behind us.

Chloe stepped into the hallway.

Her makeup was perfect.

But her confidence was gone.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

Then back at him.

“We need to leave.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Her eyes flickered.

And suddenly I knew.

She wasn’t worried about the ring.

She wasn’t worried about the accusation.

She was worried about something else.

“What happened?”” Daniel asked.

Chloe hesitated.

“I made a mistake.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone in this family loved that phrase.

Mistake.

Not cruelty.

Not betrayal.

Not damage.

Just mistakes.

“What mistake?”” Daniel demanded.

Chloe looked at him.

Then whispered:

“The person who was supposed to help us disappeared.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Help us?

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Chloe realized too late.

She had said too much.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from my security director.

*Emma. We found the original transfer records. The money did not go to Chloe.*

I read the next line.

May you like

And my breath stopped.

*It went to Daniel.*
