Chapter 8: The Family Betrayal

I drove home faster than I should have.

Every red light felt like an obstacle.

Every passing car felt like someone watching me.

Ethan’s words repeated in my head.

*She called me ten minutes ago.*

That meant Vanessa knew.

But how?

I hadn’t told her about Rachel’s letter.

I hadn’t told anyone.

Except Greg.

Except Ethan.

I parked outside the house and sat there for a moment.

The windows were dark.

Too dark.

A normal home at night had warmth.

Movement.

Life.

My house felt like a crime scene.

I entered quietly.

The living room light was on.

Vanessa sat on the couch.

Waiting.

“You took longer than I expected.””

I stopped.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled.

“A person usually moves faster after finding out the truth.””

My stomach tightened.

“What truth?””

She looked at me.

“Don’t insult me.””

I said nothing.

She stood.

“Did you enjoy reading Rachel’s final words?””

My face went cold.

“How do you know about that?””

She smiled.

And I finally understood.

Vanessa had never been afraid because she was caught.

She had been afraid because she didn’t know how much I knew.

Now she knew.

“You’ve been watching me.””

“No.””

“Then how?””

She walked toward the kitchen.

“Because Rachel was predictable.””

I followed.

“Don’t talk about her.””

“She always thought she was smarter than everyone.””

I clenched my jaw.

“Careful.””

“What?””

“You’re finally saying what you actually think.””

She stopped.

For a second, I saw the real Vanessa.

Not the stepmother.

Not the grieving wife.

The person underneath.

“You know what Rachel’s problem was?””

I stared.

“She thought love protected people.””

“She loved Lily.””

“She loved control.””

“No.””

“She controlled everything.””

I shook my head.

“You’re describing yourself.””

Her expression changed.

A flash of anger.

Then calm.

“You’re going to lose everything.””

“Is that another threat?””

“No.””

She leaned closer.

“It’s a warning.””

I laughed.

“From you?””

“Yes.””

She walked to the counter and picked up a folder.

“You think Rachel’s letter saves you?””

I stared.

“What is that?””

“Evidence.””

“Against who?””

She smiled.

“Against you.””

She opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Messages.

Records.

My heart sank.

Because I recognized some of them.

Texts between me and Rachel.

Private conversations.

Years old.

“How did you get these?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“People leave things behind.””

“You stole my wife’s messages?””

“I collected information.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For this moment.””

I felt sick.

She had been preparing longer than I realized.

Then she said:

“Tomorrow morning, the court will hear my request for emergency custody.””

I stared.

“You’re still doing this?””

“Of course.””

“After everything?””

“Especially after everything.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re angry. You’re unstable. You’re accusing people of conspiracies. You’re seeing enemies everywhere.””

I understood.

This was the plan.

Make me look exactly like the person she described.

“You want me to react.””

She smiled.

“Finally.””

I stayed silent.

That bothered her.

She expected rage.

She expected shouting.

She expected me to prove her point.

Instead, I said:

“You made one mistake.””

Her smile faded.

“What?””

“You forgot Mason.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

I continued.

“You forgot he sees everything.””

Her face hardened.

“Don’t involve my son.””

“Your son already knows.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked upstairs.

“He knows who you are.””

Her expression broke.

Only briefly.

But I saw it.

Pain.

Real pain.

Then she whispered:

“You turned him against me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You did that yourself.””

A noise came from the stairs.

Mason.

Standing there.

Holding something.

His face was pale.

“Dad.””

I walked toward him.

“What is it?””

He handed me a small notebook.

“Mom’s.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Mason.””

He stepped back.

“She told me not to touch it.””

I opened the notebook.

The first page had a title.

*Lily Timeline.*

My stomach dropped.

Inside were dates.

Notes.

Observations.

Not about parenting.

About building a case.

I flipped through.

Then I saw a page with a name.

Not Lily.

Not Michael.

A third person.

Someone Vanessa had been communicating with.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been helping her.

At the bottom of the page was a handwritten note:

*Once Michael is removed, everything transfers.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“Transfers to who?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at the name again.

And my hands started shaking.

Because the person Vanessa trusted most…

Was not Greg.

Was not Ethan.

It was someone much closer.

Someone who had been in my house.

Someone who had hugged Lily.

Someone who had told me they were family.

The name written on the page was:

May you like

*Michael Carter.*

My own name.
