Chapter 6: The Person Vanessa Trusted Most
The video changed everything.
Before that moment, part of me still searched for an explanation.
A reason.
A mistake.
Something that would allow me to wake up and discover I had misunderstood everything.
But the video removed that possibility.
Vanessa didn’t suddenly become cruel.
She had been waiting.
Waiting for Rachel to die.
Waiting for Lily to be vulnerable.
Waiting for me to trust her enough to never look closer.
I watched the video again.
Vanessa outside the hospital.
Greg standing beside her.
The envelope passing between them.
Then the words.
*Once Rachel is gone, we can start.*
David leaned forward.
“Can you send me a copy?””
I nodded.
My hands moved automatically.
But my mind was somewhere else.
Rachel’s final months.
The conversations I thought were about grief.
The moments Vanessa comforted me.
The nights she told me:
“You need to focus on healing.””
I thought she was being kind.
Now I wondered.
Was she waiting for me to be weak?
I stood up.
“I need to talk to Greg.””
David looked at me.
“Carefully.””
“Why?””
“Because if he was involved, he may already know everything.””
I looked at the video.
“He knows.””
“Maybe.””
“No.””
I pointed at the screen.
“He stood there.””
David didn’t argue.
Because he knew I was right.
I called Greg.
He answered after one ring.
“Michael.””
His voice was tired.
Almost like he had been expecting me.
“We need to talk.””
A pause.
“About what?””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was sitting at the kitchen table.
Silent.
Watching.
“You know exactly what.””
Another pause.
Then Greg said:
“Come alone.””
David immediately shook his head.
I ignored him.
“I’ll be there.””
I hung up.
David grabbed my arm.
“Michael.””
“I need answers.””
“You need protection.””
I looked at him.
“I spent three years trusting the wrong person.””
My voice cracked.
“I can’t spend another day doing nothing.””
David understood.
He handed me a card.
“Call me if anything feels wrong.””
I nodded.
Then I walked outside.
Before I reached my car, Mason appeared at the door.
“Dad.””
I turned.
He looked terrified.
“What happened?””
He held something in his hand.
A flash drive.
“I found this.””
I walked back.
“What is it?””
“Mom’s.””
“Where did you get it?””
“She keeps it hidden.””
He looked toward the house.
“In her closet.””
I took it.
“Mason, why didn’t you give this to me earlier?””
His eyes dropped.
“Because I thought she would be mad.””
I crouched.
“Listen to me.””
He looked up.
“You did nothing wrong.””
“But she’s my mom.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“Am I bad for telling you?””
That question broke my heart.
“No.””
I placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You protected Lily.””
He looked relieved.
Then whispered:
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Mom talks to someone every Friday.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did you see them?””
He nodded.
“At the house?””
“No.””
“Where?””
He looked at the driveway.
“The old pharmacy building.””
I froze.
Rachel’s father’s old company.
The company connected to the inheritance.
“Are you sure?””
Mason nodded.
“She says that’s where people go when they need to talk about Lily’s money.””
My stomach dropped.
I looked at the flash drive.
Then at the house.
Then at the life I thought I knew.
Everything connected.
The trust.
The lawyer.
The documents.
The lies.
I drove to Greg’s office.
He was waiting.
The second I entered, he knew.
“You saw the video.””
I stopped.
Not surprised anymore.
Just disappointed.
“You knew.””
Greg looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty was worse.
“How long?””
He sighed.
“Since before Rachel died.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why?””
He sat down.
“Because Vanessa approached me.””
“With what?””
“A plan.””
I stared.
He continued.
“She wanted access to Lily’s trust.””
“And you helped her?””
“No.””
“Then why were you meeting her?””
Greg looked exhausted.
“Because Rachel asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
He opened a drawer.
Pulled out a sealed envelope.
And placed it on the desk.
“Rachel knew Vanessa would come after the trust.””
I stared at the envelope.
“My wife wrote that?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The week before she died.””
I picked it up.
My name was written across the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
Rachel’s handwriting.
My fingers trembled.
“Why didn’t you give me this?””
Greg looked away.
“Because Rachel instructed me not to.””
“Why?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because she believed Vanessa would try to manipulate you.””
I looked at the envelope.
A final message from my wife.
A warning she left behind.
I opened it.
Inside was one page.
One sentence at the top.
And the words made my entire body go cold.
*Michael, if you are reading this, Vanessa has already convinced you to trust her.*
I stopped breathing.
Because Rachel didn’t just predict what Vanessa would do.
She predicted what I would do.
May you like
Then I read the next line.
*The person helping her is someone you would never suspect.*
