Thinking

Chapter 11: The Last Recording

Ethan agreed to meet us.

Not at his house.

Not at mine.

A quiet parking lot outside the old pharmacy building.

The place where Rachel’s father had built his company.

The place where Vanessa had been meeting people.

The place where everything seemed to begin.

When I arrived, Ethan was already there.

He looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like guilt had aged him.

He stepped out of his car.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know what to do with that sentence.

Sorry was too small.

Too easy.

My brother had watched someone manipulate my daughter.

My wife.

My family.

And he had stayed silent.

“Tell me everything.””

He nodded.

“I met Vanessa before you married her.””

I stared.

“She came to me because she knew I was close to Rachel.””

“What did she want?””

“She wanted to know what Rachel planned to do with the trust.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa believed Rachel would change it after Lily was born.””

“She wanted access from the beginning.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

The betrayal hurt differently coming from Ethan.

Vanessa was cruel.

I expected cruelty from strangers.

Not family.

“What happened after Rachel got sick?””

Ethan looked down.

“She became suspicious.””

“Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“Of Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Did she tell you?””

“She asked me to watch.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Rachel knew Vanessa had contacted me.””

My eyes narrowed.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she knew you would confront Vanessa.””

The same answer Greg gave.

Rachel knew me too well.

“She asked me to pretend I was still helping Vanessa.””

My jaw tightened.

“So you were spying on her?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Do you know what happened after Rachel died?””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Do you know how many nights I sat alone thinking I failed her?””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know what it feels like to wonder if you protected someone too late.””

Ethan looked away.

“You’re right.””

That was the first honest thing he said.

“I don’t.””

A long silence followed.

Then I asked:

“What proof did Rachel leave?””

Ethan reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

“Rachel gave it to me.””

“Before she died?””

He nodded.

“She told me not to open it unless Vanessa tried to take control of Lily’s trust.””

I stared.

“And you kept it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

He handed it over.

I opened it.

Inside was a small memory card.

Nothing else.

David took it carefully.

“We need to view this somewhere secure.””

We went to his office.

The entire drive, nobody spoke.

When we arrived, David connected the memory card.

A video appeared.

Rachel.

Sitting in the hospital room.

My breath caught.

She looked tired.

But alive.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face thinner.

But it was Rachel.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Michael.””

I covered my mouth.

The room disappeared.

It was just her.

My wife.

Speaking to me.

“If you are watching this, then I was right.””

A tear fell.

Rachel continued.

“I hope I’m wrong.””

She smiled sadly.

“More than anything, I hope I’m wrong.””

She looked down.

Then back up.

“Vanessa is dangerous.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing it from Rachel hurt more than anything.

“She does not want to raise Lily. She wants access to what Lily has.””

Rachel paused.

“But she is not the only person involved.””

David looked at me.

The video continued.

“There is someone else.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

Pain.

Disappointment.

“They are close to me.””

My hands tightened.

“They know things only my family should know.””

She leaned closer.

“Michael, the hardest truth is not that someone wants Lily’s money.””

A pause.

“The hardest truth is that someone you love helped them.””

I looked at Ethan.

He stared at the floor.

Rachel continued.

“I don’t know how deep it goes.””

She took a breath.

“But I know this.””

The screen flickered.

Then Rachel said:

“Vanessa didn’t start this plan.””

My heart stopped.

“She joined it.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Finally David spoke.

“Michael.””

I looked at him.

“We need to find out who started it.””

I nodded.

Because suddenly Vanessa didn’t look like the mastermind.

She looked like a piece.

A dangerous piece.

But still a piece.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

“Michael Carter?””

“Yes.””

“You found Rachel’s recording.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who tried to warn her.””

I stood.

“Who?””

The voice whispered:

May you like

“You’re looking at the wrong enemy.””

The call ended.
