Chapter 7: Rachel’s Final Letter

I read Rachel’s words again.

And again.

Not because I didn’t understand them.

Because I didn’t want to.

*The person helping her is someone you would never suspect.*

My first thought was Greg.

It had to be Greg.

He was the lawyer.

He had access to the trust.

He had been standing with Vanessa outside Rachel’s hospital room.

He was the obvious answer.

But something stopped me.

Greg had looked afraid.

Not confident.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

I looked up.

“Who?””

Greg didn’t answer.

“Greg.””

He rubbed his face.

“I can’t tell you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You can’t?””

“Rachel made me promise.””

“My wife is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then stop protecting secrets.””

His jaw tightened.

“You think secrets are always meant to hurt people.””

“Aren’t they?””

“No.””

He looked at the envelope.

“Sometimes secrets are the only way to protect them.””

I hated that answer.

Because it sounded like something Rachel would say.

I opened the letter completely.

The paper shook in my hand.

*Michael,*

*If you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.*

*I need you to know something first. I never doubted your ability to love Lily. Not once.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

Because that was exactly what Vanessa had been attacking.

My ability.

My judgment.

My role as a father.

I continued.

*But love is not always enough. Sometimes protecting someone means recognizing the people who hide behind kindness.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

Rachel knew.

She knew someone would try to make me question myself.

*Vanessa will not come after Lily immediately. She will wait. She will become someone Lily trusts. She will become someone you trust.*

I closed my eyes.

Because that was exactly what happened.

After Rachel died, Vanessa had appeared like a lifeline.

She brought meals.

She helped with Lily.

She sat with me during the nights when grief felt impossible.

I thought she saved me.

She was just positioning herself.

*The most dangerous people are not always the ones who appear cruel. Sometimes they are the ones who know exactly what kindness looks like.*

My hand tightened.

Then I reached the next paragraph.

*But Vanessa is not working alone.*

I looked at Greg.

He looked away.

*Someone close to me helped her. Someone who knew about my illness. Someone who knew about the trust. Someone who had access to information they should never have had.*

My heart started beating faster.

Someone close to Rachel.

Someone she trusted.

I kept reading.

*I do not want you to confront anyone until you have proof. Anger will make you predictable. Fear will make you careless.*

That sounded exactly like Rachel.

Calm.

Precise.

Always thinking ten steps ahead.

*Michael, I know you. You will want to fight immediately. You will want to protect Lily. But please remember this: the person who did this is counting on your emotions.*

I lowered the letter.

For three years, I thought grief had made me weaker.

Maybe Rachel knew it could make me easier to control.

Greg finally spoke.

“She asked me to watch.””

I looked up.

“Watch what?””

“Who came near the trust.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she believed you would confront Vanessa.””

“I should have.””

“And then what?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he was right.

If I had known three years ago, I would have exploded.

I would have accused Vanessa.

I would have demanded answers.

And without proof, Vanessa would have looked like the victim.

Greg continued.

“Rachel knew Vanessa was patient.””

I looked at him.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Vanessa tried once before.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“Before Rachel became sick.””

I stood.

“What did she do?””

Greg looked uncomfortable.

“She asked Rachel to change the trust.””

“To give her access?””

“Yes.””

“And Rachel refused?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Greg looked at the floor.

“Because Rachel didn’t want you to see the worst in everyone.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That was her mistake.””

“No.””

Greg looked at me.

“Her mistake was believing Vanessa would stop.””

The words stayed with me.

Because Vanessa didn’t stop.

She escalated.

She waited.

She studied.

Then she attacked when she thought nobody was watching.

I folded the letter carefully.

“Who is helping her?””

Greg stayed silent.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

He finally whispered:

“Someone in your family.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“My family?””

Greg nodded.

“Someone who knew Rachel’s wishes.””

I stared at him.

There weren’t many possibilities.

My parents lived across the state.

My brother rarely visited.

My family wasn’t involved with the trust.

Then one name appeared in my mind.

And I hated it.

“No.””

Greg looked at me.

“You know.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Because that person was impossible.

That person had held Lily after Rachel died.

That person had cried with me.

That person had helped plan Rachel’s funeral.

My own brother.

Ethan.

I left Greg’s office feeling like the ground beneath me had disappeared.

I called Ethan.

He answered immediately.

“Michael?””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Home.””

“I need to ask you something.””

His voice changed.

“What happened?””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“Did Vanessa ever talk to you about Lily’s trust?””

Silence.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Then:

“Why are you asking?””

My heart sank.

“Ethan.””

“Michael, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“Answer me.””

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.””

I pulled over.

“When?””

“Before you married her.””

The world went quiet.

“What did she ask?””

Ethan breathed out.

“She wanted to know how protected the money was.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you told her?””

“No.””

“You knew?””

“I thought she was just curious.””

I laughed.

“Curious?””

“Michael, I didn’t know.””

“Did you meet with her?””

Silence.

That was my answer.

“When?””

“Michael—”

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

The same time Rachel died.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where?””

Ethan answered quietly.

“At the old pharmacy building.””

My blood ran cold.

The same place Mason mentioned.

“Who else was there?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

“Who else?””

Finally:

“Greg.””

I stared through the windshield.

Everything connected.

But something still didn’t make sense.

If Greg and Ethan were involved…

Why did Greg give me Rachel’s letter?

Why warn me?

Unless…

Unless someone else was behind both of them.

Then Ethan said something that made my blood freeze.

“Michael.””

“What?””

“You need to leave Vanessa.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“You need to leave tonight.””

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Because she knows you found the letter.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

May you like

Ethan whispered:

“Because she called me ten minutes ago.””
