Chapter 13: The Truth Beneath the Pharmacy

I stared at the email notification.

My first thought was impossible.

My second thought was worse.

Someone had been inside David’s system.

Someone had access to every conversation we had.

Every discovery.

Every step.

I looked at David.

“Did you open it?””

He shook his head slowly.

“No.””

The email remained on his screen.

Sender:

*Rachel Bennett*

Subject:

*The person you trust most is next.*

My stomach tightened.

Because Rachel’s name had become a ghost following us.

Every time we thought we understood the truth, another piece appeared.

Another warning.

Another secret.

David closed his laptop.

“We’re not opening that here.””

I nodded.

He was right.

The pattern was obvious.

Someone wanted us to react.

Someone wanted us to chase.

Someone wanted us moving exactly where they wanted.

But there was one thing I knew.

I couldn’t ignore Rachel’s warnings.

Not anymore.

We drove to the old pharmacy building together.

Not because I trusted the message.

Because I needed to know who was behind it.

The building had been abandoned for years.

The sign was still hanging above the entrance.

*BENNETT FAMILY PHARMACY*

The same place where Rachel grew up.

The same place where she told me she learned what family meant.

The parking lot was empty.

Too empty.

David looked around.

“Something feels wrong.””

I nodded.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled like dust and old wood.

The shelves were empty.

The lights flickered overhead.

But someone had been here recently.

There were fresh footprints.

A coffee cup on the counter.

A chair pulled away from a desk.

Someone had been waiting.

We walked deeper into the building.

Then I heard a voice.

“Michael.””

I froze.

The voice was older.

But familiar.

I turned.

And my entire body stopped.

Thomas Bennett stood at the end of the hallway.

Alive.

Not a picture.

Not a recording.

A living person.

Rachel’s father.

Lily’s grandfather.

The man I had buried in my mind years ago.

I couldn’t speak.

David stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You brought a lawyer.””

“I brought someone who knows how to protect Michael.””

Thomas gave a sad smile.

“Rachel would have approved.””

I felt anger rise.

“Don’t say her name.””

His expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I deserve that.””

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let everyone believe you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“You let Rachel think she lost her father.””

His eyes lowered.

“I had reasons.””

“No.””

My voice echoed through the building.

“You had choices.””

He accepted that.

Maybe because he knew he couldn’t defend himself.

“Rachel knew.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew I was alive.””

The world went quiet.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

I looked at David.

He looked equally shocked.

“Why?””

Thomas walked toward us slowly.

“Because she discovered the company was being used.””

“Used by who?””

His eyes moved toward the floor.

“Vanessa.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

But he shook his head.

“No.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Vanessa was never the beginning.””

The same words.

Again.

She wasn’t the beginning.

She was a piece.

Thomas continued.

“She was desperate.””

“For money.””

“For security.””

“That doesn’t excuse anything.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But desperation makes people easy to manipulate.””

I stared.

“Who manipulated her?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked to an old cabinet.

Opened it.

Pulled out a folder.

Inside were documents.

Bank transfers.

Contracts.

Emails.

He handed them to me.

I read the first page.

A company name.

A transaction.

A signature.

My heart stopped.

Because the signature belonged to someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been helping me.

David.

I looked up immediately.

“What is this?””

David stepped closer.

His face changed.

“I don’t know.””

The document showed a payment.

A large payment.

Sent years ago.

To an account connected to legal consulting.

Under the name:

*David Reed Legal Services.*

I stared at him.

“David.””

He looked horrified.

“Michael, I swear to you—”

Thomas interrupted.

“Look closer.””

I did.

The date.

The payment wasn’t to David.

It was to an old account.

Before David became my attorney.

Before Rachel died.

I looked at him.

He exhaled.

“I had an old partnership.””

“With who?””

He didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

“Ethan.””

The room froze.

My brother again.

Always my brother.

David closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t know what?””

“That Ethan was involved with Vanessa.””

I looked at Thomas.

“How deep does this go?””

Thomas’s face became serious.

“Deep enough that Rachel recorded everything.””

“Where are the recordings?””

He looked at me.

“Somewhere Vanessa never found.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

*You found him. Good. Now ask him why Rachel died.*

I felt cold.

I looked at Thomas.

“What does this mean?””

His expression changed.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

“Michael.””

May you like

“What?””

“Rachel’s death was not natural.””
