Chapter 8: The Uncle Who Was Never Family
The name echoed through the mansion.
Michael.
Adrian felt as if someone had reached inside his chest and pulled the air away.
For a moment, he couldn’t process it.
Because Michael wasn’t a stranger.
He wasn’t some distant business partner.
He was family.
His older brother.
The person who had stood beside him at every major moment of his life.
The person who had held Lily after Eleanor’s funeral.
The person who had told Adrian, “We’ll get through this together.””
Now that same name was connected to the secret Eleanor had died trying to reveal.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like Adrian was trying to convince himself.
“No, Lily.””
The little girl looked frightened.
“Daddy…”
Adrian immediately softened.
“I’m not angry at you.””
He touched her shoulder gently.
“You did nothing wrong.””
Lily nodded, but she still looked afraid.
“He was mean to Mommy.””
Adrian froze.
“What do you mean?””
Lily looked at Teddy.
“Mommy told him to leave.””
“Michael?””
She nodded.
“He was yelling.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“When did you see him?””
Lily looked down.
“I don’t know.””
She squeezed the bear.
“But after Mommy cried.””
The room became silent.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“You knew about Michael?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Everyone knew something.””
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
Daniel sighed.
“Eleanor suspected him too.””
Adrian stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she wasn’t sure.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“And because Michael was your brother.””
The answer hurt because it was true.
Adrian had spent years believing family meant safety.
He had trusted the people closest to him.
And those were the exact people hiding the truth.
Clara stepped forward.
“What happens now?””
Adrian looked toward his office.
The place where Lily said Michael had hidden something.
“We find out what he left behind.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll come with you.””
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I need to do this myself.””
Daniel understood.
This wasn’t just about evidence.
It was about betrayal.
Adrian walked upstairs.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
The mansion was silent.
The same halls where his family had laughed.
The same walls that had witnessed birthdays, holidays, and ordinary days.
Now every corner felt like it was hiding a secret.
When he reached his office door, he stopped.
He remembered Michael sitting inside.
Drinking coffee.
Reviewing business plans.
Giving advice.
How many times had Michael been in this room?
How many times had he searched through Adrian’s things?
Adrian opened the door.
The office smelled the same.
Leather.
Wood.
Old books.
Normal.
Almost too normal.
He walked inside.
“Where would you hide something?””
The question wasn’t directed at anyone.
It was just his mind trying to understand.
Daniel entered quietly behind him.
“You said you wanted to do this alone.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I changed my mind.””
They searched carefully.
Drawers.
Cabinets.
Shelves.
Nothing.
For twenty minutes, there was nothing.
Then Daniel stopped.
“Wait.””
Adrian turned.
Daniel was looking at the bookshelf.
“What?””
“This.””
He pulled out a book.
A business book Adrian had never read.
Behind it was a small opening.
Adrian stared.
“There’s a compartment.””
Inside was a small metal box.
Locked.
Daniel looked at him.
“Do you have the key?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
He examined the box.
Then noticed something carved into the side.
A single letter.
*E.*
Eleanor.
His hands tightened.
“She left this.””
Daniel nodded.
Adrian forced the lock open.
Inside were several items.
A flash drive.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
Adrian picked up the photograph first.
His heart stopped.
It showed Michael.
Standing beside Vanessa.
Not at a family event.
Not at the mansion.
Somewhere private.
They looked close.
Too close.
On the back of the photo was a date.
Three months before Eleanor died.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“They were together.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Because the evidence was already there.
Adrian opened the note.
Eleanor’s handwriting.
*Adrian, if you found this, you finally know what I was afraid of.*
He read silently.
Then continued.
*Michael was helping Vanessa move money from the company. But that was not the part that scared me most.*
Adrian’s eyes moved faster.
*The worst thing was discovering they were not only trying to steal from us.*
A pause.
His heart began pounding.
*They were trying to take Lily.*
The room went cold.
“What?””
Daniel looked up.
“What does it say?””
Adrian handed him the note.
Daniel read it.
His expression changed.
“Take Lily?””
Adrian continued reading.
*They believed if something happened to me, Adrian would be too broken to fight. They planned to convince him Lily needed a different guardian.*
Adrian felt sick.
The idea was impossible.
Monstrous.
Michael wanted custody of Lily?
Vanessa wanted control of the family?
Everything Eleanor had feared suddenly made sense.
The lies.
The manipulation.
The attempts to separate Lily from Teddy.
They weren’t random.
They were steps.
Adrian picked up the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
Daniel looked at it.
“Only one way to know.””
They connected it to the laptop.
A video appeared.
No title.
No date.
Adrian clicked.
The footage showed Michael.
Alone.
Sitting in the same office.
His office.
Michael looked nervous.
Then someone entered.
Vanessa.
The recording began.
“You said you handled it.””
Vanessa’s voice was sharp.
Michael rubbed his face.
“I tried.””
“You tried?””
“I didn’t know Eleanor would find the records.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“She knows too much.””
Michael looked worried.
“She’s Adrian’s wife.””
“And?””
The answer was cold.
“She’s in the way.””
Adrian stopped breathing.
On the screen, Michael looked uncomfortable.
“You’re talking about Eleanor.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“I’m talking about the problem.””
The video paused.
Adrian’s hand hovered over the mouse.
Daniel looked at him.
“Keep watching.””
Adrian pressed play.
Michael stood.
“This has gone too far.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Too far?””
She moved closer.
“You promised me.””
Michael looked away.
“What about Lily?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
The same cold expression Adrian had seen before.
“Lily will be fine.””
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“She’s a child.””
Vanessa smiled.
“She’s an inheritance.””
Adrian felt his stomach turn.
The video continued.
Michael lowered his voice.
“What if Adrian finds out?””
Vanessa looked directly at the camera.
And for a second, Adrian wondered if she knew she was being recorded.
“He won’t.””
The screen suddenly glitched.
Then the audio became distorted.
A few seconds later, the video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Adrian stared at the screen.
His brother.
His wife.
Together.
Planning.
Using his daughter.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*You found the videos. Now find the person who recorded them.*
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
Another message arrived.
A photo.
His blood ran cold.
Because the picture showed the hidden camera inside Teddy.
But the photo had been taken tonight.
Inside the mansion.
Someone was still watching them.
Then another message appeared.
*The person you trust most is the one who hid the final truth.*
Adrian looked around the room.
Daniel.
Clara.
Lily.
Everyone he knew.
Everyone he trusted.
Then he noticed something.
The second teddy bear was gone.
His eyes widened.
“Where is it?””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“The second bear.””
They both turned.
The table was empty.
Someone had taken it.
And downstairs, from the living room…
Lily screamed.
“Daddy!””
Adrian ran.
Because when he reached the bottom of the stairs, he saw who was holding the teddy bear.
And it wasn’t Vanessa.
May you like
It wasn’t Michael.
It was Clara.
