Chapter 7: The Second Teddy Bear

Nobody moved.

The man standing at the top of the stairs looked down at them with a tired expression.

He wasn’t threatening.

He wasn’t angry.

But something about his presence made the entire room feel unsafe.

Because nobody understood how he got there.

Or why he was holding another teddy bear.

Adrian slowly stepped forward.

“Dr. Hayes?””

The man nodded.

“Yes.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You were supposed to be retired.””

“I was.””

“Then why are you here?””

Dr. Hayes looked at Lily.

The little girl immediately hid behind Adrian.

That reaction told him everything.

“You remember me,” the doctor said softly.

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice said otherwise.

Adrian noticed.

“Lily.””

She grabbed his hand.

“He was there.””

The doctor’s expression changed.

“Lily…”

Adrian turned sharply.

“You were there the night Eleanor died?””

Dr. Hayes slowly walked down the stairs.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

The doctor stopped.

Because he knew there was no easy answer.

“Because Eleanor asked me not to.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice rose.

“Everyone had promises. Everyone had secrets. Everyone knew something except me.””

Dr. Hayes looked down.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised Adrian.

“You’re right to be angry.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why are you carrying another teddy bear?””

Dr. Hayes looked at the toy in his hand.

“Because this one contains the missing piece.””

The room went silent.

Adrian looked at Teddy in Lily’s arms.

Then at the new bear.

“What does that mean?””

Dr. Hayes walked toward the table.

He placed the second teddy bear beside the first.

At first glance, they looked identical.

Same brown fur.

Same red ribbon.

Same stitched smile.

But there was one difference.

The new bear had both button eyes.

Adrian stared.

“Why are there two?””

Dr. Hayes looked at Lily.

“Because Eleanor made sure the truth could survive even if one was found.””

Clara frowned.

“What are you saying?””

The doctor took a breath.

“Eleanor knew someone was watching her.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“Who?””

Dr. Hayes didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa’s empty chair.

“She didn’t know at first.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“But later?””

The doctor nodded.

“Later she knew.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.””

Dr. Hayes looked at the family around him.

Then at Lily.

“I treated Eleanor for several months before her death.””

Adrian nodded.

“I know.””

“No, you know what the medical records say.””

The doctor’s voice became serious.

“You don’t know what Eleanor told me.””

The room became quiet.

“What did she tell you?””

Dr. Hayes looked at the floor.

“She told me she believed someone was trying to make her look sick.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

“She said her symptoms didn’t make sense.””

Clara covered her mouth.

“But the tests…”

Dr. Hayes nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at Adrian.

“The tests showed something was wrong.””

A pause.

“But Eleanor believed someone was causing it.””

Adrian stared.

“Are you saying she was poisoned?””

Nobody spoke.

The word was too heavy.

Dr. Hayes didn’t answer directly.

“I’m saying Eleanor was suspicious.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Did you test for anything?””

The doctor looked away.

“I tried.””

“And?””

“I found something unusual.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“What?””

Dr. Hayes opened his briefcase.

He removed an old folder.

“I discovered traces of a substance that could worsen certain symptoms.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The doctor looked ashamed.

“Because Eleanor stopped me.””

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Dr. Hayes looked at Lily.

“Of making whoever was responsible act faster.””

The room became painfully silent.

Adrian looked at the teddy bears.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“She knew someone wanted her gone.””

“Yes.””

“And she still stayed here?””

The doctor’s expression softened.

“She stayed because of Lily.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

His daughter.

Everything Eleanor did was for their daughter.

Every secret.

Every hidden message.

Every warning.

All for Lily.

“Why the bears?”” Adrian asked.

Dr. Hayes touched the second teddy bear.

“Because Eleanor trusted that Lily would protect what mattered.””

Lily looked up.

“Mommy said Teddy was brave.””

The doctor smiled sadly.

“She was right.””

He turned the second bear around.

“After Eleanor gave Lily the first bear, she asked me to prepare another.””

Clara frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she knew someone might take the first one.””

Everyone went silent.

Adrian remembered.

Vanessa taking Teddy earlier that night.

The way she insisted Lily needed to let go.

His stomach tightened.

“What is inside the second one?””

Dr. Hayes carefully opened the stitching.

Inside was another memory card.

Adrian stared.

“Another video.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t Eleanor put it in the first bear?””

“Because the first bear was for Lily.””

Dr. Hayes looked at him.

“The second was for you.””

Adrian inserted the card into the laptop.

Everyone gathered around.

The screen turned on.

This time, Eleanor appeared immediately.

But she wasn’t alone.

Someone was sitting across from her.

The camera angle was hidden.

The image was blurry.

But the voice was clear.

A woman’s voice.

“I don’t understand why you’re doing this.””

Eleanor looked exhausted.

“Because I know what happened.””

The woman responded:

“You’re making a mistake.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“No. My mistake was trusting you.””

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

He knew that voice.

Everyone did.

The camera shifted slightly.

The woman’s face came into view.

Vanessa.

The room went silent.

On the screen, Vanessa looked younger.

Less polished.

Less careful.

But it was her.

“I gave you a chance,” Vanessa said.

Eleanor stared at her.

“You threatened my daughter.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never threatened Lily.””

Eleanor leaned forward.

“You don’t have to say it directly.””

Adrian’s hands clenched.

The video continued.

Vanessa stood.

“You’re making things complicated.””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Did you think I wouldn’t notice?””

“Notice what?””

“The money.””

Vanessa froze.

Adrian looked at the financial documents on the table.

Eleanor continued:

“The fake accounts.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“The messages.””

The room became colder.

“And the agreement you made.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Eleanor looked directly at her.

“I know enough.””

A long pause.

Then Eleanor said:

“I know you weren’t working alone.””

The video suddenly distorted.

Adrian leaned closer.

“What?””

The screen flickered.

Then the audio returned.

Vanessa’s voice was clear.

“You think Adrian will believe you?””

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“Not at first.””

She touched something off camera.

“But eventually, he will.””

The video ended.

Everyone stared at the black screen.

Then Adrian slowly turned.

“Who was she working with?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

A tiny voice.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

Adrian immediately knelt.

“What do you know, sweetheart?””

The little girl looked terrified.

She pointed at the second teddy bear.

“Mommy told me the other person was hiding.””

“Where?””

Lily looked upstairs.

“In Daddy’s office.””

Adrian froze.

“My office?””

She nodded.

“He came there after Mommy went away.””

A horrible silence filled the room.

Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Lily looked at the staircase.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she said the name.

The name that made Adrian’s blood run cold.

“The person who helped Vanessa…”

May you like

She swallowed.

“…was Uncle Michael.””
