Chapter 2: The Secret Inside Teddy

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The rain continued tapping against the windows.

The grandfather clock in the corner kept ticking.

And in the middle of the Whitmore mansion’s living room, a five-year-old girl stood holding a teddy bear like it was the only thing keeping her safe.

Adrian stared at the bear in Lily’s arms.

He had seen that toy hundreds of times.

He had watched Lily sleep with it.

He had watched her carry it through the halls.

He had even joked once that Teddy was the most important member of the family.

But he had never imagined there was something hidden inside it.

“Lily,” Adrian said quietly, kneeling down so they were at the same level, “what exactly did Mommy put inside Teddy?””

The little girl looked nervous.

Her fingers tightened around the worn fur.

“She told me not to tell anyone.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Adrian, this has gone far enough.””

Her voice was calm, but there was tension underneath it.

“She’s confused. Eleanor died when Lily was too young. She’s probably mixing dreams with memories.””

Clara looked at Vanessa.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Excuse me?””

Clara didn’t back away.

“Lily remembers more than people think.””

The room became silent.

Adrian looked between them.

He knew Clara rarely challenged anyone.

Not even Vanessa.

So hearing that sentence from her made him pause.

“Clara,” Adrian said, “what do you know?””

Before she could answer, Vanessa interrupted.

“She knows how to make a child more attached to the past.””

Clara’s expression hardened.

“No. I know how much Eleanor loved her daughter.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“And I don’t?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in the room knew the question was more complicated than it sounded.

Adrian looked at Lily again.

His daughter’s face was still wet with tears.

He reached out his hand.

“Can Daddy see Teddy?””

Lily hesitated.

For a moment, she looked at Vanessa.

Then she slowly handed the bear to Adrian.

The second Adrian touched it, he felt something strange.

The bear was heavier than it should have been.

Not much.

Just enough to notice.

He turned it over carefully.

The old stitching around the button eye caught his attention again.

“Where is this from?”” he asked.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Adrian, seriously?””

He ignored her.

“Lily, did Mommy give you this?””

The little girl nodded.

“She gave it to me before she went away.””

Adrian’s face changed slightly.

Before she went away.

That was how Lily described death.

Because nobody had ever been brave enough to explain it fully to her.

He swallowed.

“Did she say anything else?””

Lily looked down.

“She said…”

The girl paused.

“She said grown-ups don’t always tell the truth.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Just for a moment.

But Adrian saw it.

And something inside him shifted.

“Why would she say that?”” he asked.

Lily shrugged.

“I don’t know.””

Then she whispered:

“But Mommy looked scared.””

The words hit the room harder than anyone expected.

Adrian slowly stood.

“Scared of what?””

Lily didn’t answer.

Instead, she pointed at Teddy’s eye.

“That.””

Everyone looked.

Adrian examined the button carefully.

The stitching was uneven.

Almost like someone had reopened it and closed it again.

“Get me a small knife,” he said.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Adrian looked at her.

The single word surprised him.

“What?””

“I mean…”

She quickly corrected herself.

“I just don’t think destroying Eleanor’s last gift is the right thing to do.””

Clara watched Vanessa carefully.

“You were willing to take it away from Lily five minutes ago.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“That is different.””

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The silence was enough.

Adrian walked toward the table and picked up a small letter opener from his office bag.

Nobody spoke.

He carefully cut the old thread around the button.

Lily covered her mouth.

“Daddy, don’t hurt Teddy.””

Adrian looked at her.

“I won’t.””

He smiled gently.

“Daddy just wants to see what Mommy wanted us to find.””

The button came loose.

And underneath it…

Something black was hidden inside the bear’s head.

Not stuffing.

Not fabric.

Something electronic.

Adrian froze.

Clara gasped.

“What is that?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“It’s probably some old toy part.””

Adrian didn’t respond.

He pulled the object out carefully.

A tiny camera.

The room went completely silent.

Lily looked at it proudly.

“I told you.””

Adrian stared at the device.

His heart began beating faster.

Eleanor had hidden a camera inside their daughter’s teddy bear.

Why?

And more importantly…

What had she wanted someone to see?

“Does it work?”” Clara whispered.

Adrian examined the device.

“There’s a memory card.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“Adrian, stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately softened her tone.

“I mean… maybe we shouldn’t invade Eleanor’s privacy.””

Adrian stared.

“Privacy?””

He held up the camera.

“She hid this inside Lily’s toy.””

Vanessa forced a smile.

“Exactly. Which means she didn’t want anyone finding it.””

“No,” Clara said quietly.

“She wanted someone specific to find it.””

Adrian looked at Clara.

The nanny’s face had gone pale.

“What?””

Clara took a slow breath.

“Eleanor was careful. She didn’t do things randomly.””

Adrian remembered.

His first wife had always been organized.

Thoughtful.

She kept backup copies of everything.

Important documents.

Family photos.

Even handwritten notes about Lily’s allergies and bedtime routine.

She planned everything.

If she had hidden a camera…

There was a reason.

“Where is the footage?”” Adrian asked.

The servant brought a laptop.

Adrian inserted the memory card.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Then a folder appeared.

Only one video file.

No name.

No date.

Just a single recording.

Vanessa’s face became unreadable.

Adrian noticed.

“Have you seen this before?””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Of course not.””

But her answer came too quickly.

Adrian looked away and opened the file.

The screen flickered.

At first, the image was dark.

Then a familiar room appeared.

The Whitmore living room.

Everyone recognized it immediately.

But the scene on the screen was not from that night.

It was from two years earlier.

Before Eleanor died.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Because there was Eleanor.

Alive.

Sitting on the same sofa.

Holding Lily’s teddy bear.

She looked tired.

Worried.

And unlike the woman everyone remembered…

She looked afraid.

The recording continued.

Eleanor looked directly into the hidden camera.

“Lily,” she whispered.

Adrian’s hand froze on the laptop.

His daughter stepped closer.

The voice of her mother filled the room.

“If you are watching this, it means something happened to me.””

Lily’s eyes widened.

“Mommy…”

Eleanor continued.

“I need you to know something.””

She looked around the room nervously.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Do not trust everyone who tells you they love you.””

The room went cold.

Vanessa stood completely still.

Adrian noticed.

He noticed everything.

Eleanor’s expression became more serious.

“There is someone in this house who is hiding the truth.””

Clara covered her mouth.

Adrian leaned closer to the screen.

Then Eleanor said the one sentence nobody expected.

“The person who will hurt you is not a stranger.””

The video suddenly glitched.

The image froze.

Then the screen went black.

A message appeared.

*FILE INTERRUPTED. SECOND PART REQUIRED.*

Adrian stared.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then the laptop made a sound.

A notification appeared.

A new file had been unlocked.

Created moments ago.

Adrian clicked on it.

The file name appeared.

And when he saw the name, his face changed.

Because the second video was not recorded by Eleanor.

May you like

It was recorded after her death.

And the person who created it was someone standing in that room.
