Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Eleanor’s Last Secret

The name hung in the air like a warning.

Daniel.

Adrian looked at the stranger standing in the doorway.

The man was older than him by a few years, with tired eyes and a face that carried the weight of someone who had spent too long running from something.

But it wasn’t his appearance that made the room feel colder.

It was the way Vanessa reacted.

She had been defensive all night.

Angry.

Manipulative.

Always ready with an explanation.

But when she saw Daniel…

She looked afraid.

“Who are you?”” Adrian demanded.

The man didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes moved to Lily.

The little girl was still holding Teddy.

Then he looked at the laptop screen.

The words *ELEANOR’S FINAL MESSAGE* were still glowing.

“I came here because I knew this day would come,” Daniel finally said.

Adrian stepped forward.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

A thousand questions rushed through Adrian’s mind.

“How do you know about Eleanor’s video?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“I know because I helped her hide it.””

The room exploded into chaos.

“What?””

Adrian’s voice echoed through the mansion.

Vanessa immediately moved.

“Adrian, don’t listen to him.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You still do that.””

Her face tightened.

“Do what?””

“Pretend you’re the victim.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Clara looked between them.

“You know each other.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Yes.””

Adrian turned toward Vanessa.

“You told me you barely knew anyone connected to Eleanor.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

That was enough.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“How long have you known him?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Adrian…”

“How long?””

Daniel answered for her.

“Before she married you.””

Adrian felt like the floor moved beneath him.

“Before?””

Daniel walked slowly into the room.

“I worked with Eleanor.””

“With Eleanor?””

Adrian frowned.

“What kind of work?””

Daniel looked at the laptop.

“The kind that made her realize someone close to her was hiding things.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. This is exactly what you wanted.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What I wanted?””

His voice became colder.

“You destroyed everything she built.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Be careful.””

Adrian noticed the exchange.

There was history between them.

A history nobody had told him about.

He turned to Daniel.

“Start talking.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I will.””

He pointed at the laptop.

“But first, you need to see what Eleanor left behind.””

Nobody moved.

Then Adrian slowly clicked the final message.

The video opened.

For a few seconds, the screen was dark.

Then Eleanor appeared.

Adrian’s breath caught.

Even after two years, seeing her face felt impossible.

She was sitting in the same room.

The same room where Lily had cried earlier.

But this time, Eleanor looked different.

She wasn’t sick.

She wasn’t weak.

She looked determined.

Like someone who had already accepted what she needed to do.

“Adrian,” Eleanor said.

His chest tightened.

She was speaking directly to him.

“If you are watching this, then Lily found Teddy.””

Lily stepped closer.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mommy…”

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“I know you might not understand why I did this.””

She looked down briefly.

“But I needed to protect my daughter.””

Adrian stared at the screen.

“I spent years believing our family was safe.””

Eleanor continued.

“I believed the people around us loved Lily as much as I did.””

Her expression changed.

“But I was wrong.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Nobody listened.

Eleanor looked into the camera.

“There is someone inside this house who has been taking things from us.””

Adrian frowned.

“Taking what?””

Eleanor continued.

“Money. Information. Trust.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Adrian noticed.

“You knew.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The video continued.

“I tried to confront this person.””

Eleanor took a breath.

“And that was my mistake.””

The room became colder.

“I should have waited.””

Adrian leaned closer.

“Why?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because when someone knows you’ve discovered their secret, they stop hiding.””

The video glitched slightly.

Then Eleanor said:

“If anything happens to me, Adrian, do not believe the first story you hear.””

Adrian felt his heart sink.

The first story.

The official story.

The one everyone had accepted.

Her illness.

Her sudden decline.

Her death.

He had never questioned it.

Because why would he?

Eleanor had been diagnosed.

Doctors had confirmed it.

Everything had seemed real.

But now…

He wasn’t sure about anything.

Eleanor looked at the camera again.

“There is proof.””

A pause.

“I hid it where only Lily would keep it safe.””

Lily touched Teddy.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“You mean the camera?””

Eleanor nodded on the screen.

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“But the camera is not the only thing.””

Everyone froze.

Eleanor continued.

“There is another memory card.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

He looked alarmed.

“What?””

Daniel stepped toward the laptop.

“Stop the video.””

Adrian blocked him.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Because the second part reveals something Eleanor didn’t want anyone to see until the right moment.””

Adrian stared.

“You mean there’s more?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said quietly:

“The truth about the night Eleanor died.””

The room went silent.

Adrian felt his hands become cold.

For two years, he had lived with the same memory.

The hospital room.

The doctors.

Eleanor holding his hand.

Her weak smile.

Her final words.

Take care of Lily.

But now, Daniel was suggesting there was another truth.

Something hidden.

Something he had never known.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the laptop.

Not at him.

Not at Daniel.

At the screen.

Like she was afraid of what would appear next.

“Vanessa.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“What happened the night Eleanor died?””

Her lips parted.

“I already told you.””

“Tell me again.””

She swallowed.

“She was sick.””

“Only that?””

“Yes.””

Adrian studied her.

For the first time since their marriage, he didn’t see his wife.

He saw a stranger.

A person he might never have known.

Daniel reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because Eleanor asked me to.””

Adrian stared at it.

“What is that?””

Daniel handed it over.

“Something she wrote the day before she died.””

Vanessa moved forward.

“No.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What?””

She stopped.

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“She knows what’s inside.””

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Eleanor’s handwriting.

His hands shook as he read the first line.

*Adrian, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect Lily myself.*

His breathing became heavier.

He continued.

*The person who caused this is someone you trust. Someone you brought into our home.*

The room felt frozen.

Then he reached the next sentence.

And everything changed.

Because Eleanor had written a name.

A name Adrian never expected to see.

He looked up slowly.

His eyes locked onto Vanessa.

“Why did Eleanor write your name?”” he whispered.

Vanessa’s face went completely blank.

May you like

And for the first time…

She had no explanation.
