Chapter 6: The Memory Lily Was Too Afraid to Tell

The phone call ended.

But the words remained.

*Ask your daughter what she saw the night her mother died.*

Adrian stood in the middle of the darkened living room, staring at the blank screen of his phone.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody knew what to say.

Because everyone had been searching for answers hidden in documents, videos, and secret recordings.

Nobody had thought the answer might be inside a five-year-old child.

A child who had lost her mother.

A child who had already been through enough.

Clara returned to the room moments later, holding Lily’s hand.

The little girl was still hugging Teddy tightly.

“Daddy?””

Adrian looked at her.

And for the first time in years, he didn’t see a little girl who needed protection.

He saw the only person who might know the truth.

But he also saw the fear in her eyes.

He immediately softened.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

Lily walked toward him.

Adrian knelt down.

He carefully moved a strand of hair away from her face.

“Can Daddy ask you something?””

She nodded.

“About Mommy?””

Her small fingers tightened around Teddy.

Adrian noticed.

He didn’t want to scare her.

He chose his words carefully.

“Do you remember the night Mommy went to the hospital?””

Lily looked down.

A long silence followed.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.””

“Can you tell Daddy what happened?””

The little girl didn’t answer.

She looked at Clara.

Then at Teddy.

Then back at Adrian.

“Mommy said I shouldn’t talk about it.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“Why?””

Lily whispered:

“She said someone would get angry.””

Across the room, Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Adrian noticed.

“Who would get angry?””

Lily’s eyes moved toward the floor.

“I don’t know.””

“Lily.””

Adrian took her small hands.

“You’re safe.””

The words seemed to comfort her.

A little.

“But I don’t remember everything.””

“That’s okay.””

He smiled gently.

“You can tell Daddy whatever you remember.””

Lily looked at Teddy.

“Mommy was crying.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Where?””

“In her room.””

“When?””

“Before the ambulance came.””

The room became silent.

Adrian remembered that night.

The doctors had said Eleanor’s condition suddenly worsened.

He remembered the panic.

The hospital.

The fear.

But he remembered something else too.

Eleanor had asked to speak to him alone.

And when he returned to the room…

Vanessa had been there.

He had never questioned why.

Now he wondered.

“What happened in Mommy’s room?”” Adrian asked.

Lily closed her eyes.

Trying to remember.

“She was talking to someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you see them?””

She shook her head.

“They were behind the door.””

Adrian’s heart started beating faster.

“What did you hear?””

Lily’s voice became quieter.

“Mommy said…”

She stopped.

“It’s okay.””

Adrian squeezed her hands.

“You can tell me.””

Lily swallowed.

“She said, ‘You promised me.’”

Everyone in the room became still.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“I don’t know what she means.””

Nobody had accused her yet.

But she answered anyway.

And that was enough to make Adrian suspicious.

Lily continued.

“The person said something.””

“What?””

The little girl frowned.

“I don’t remember.””

“Try.””

She looked frustrated.

Like she was fighting against a locked door inside her own mind.

Then suddenly, her eyes widened.

“They said…”

She paused.

“They said, ‘You should have stayed quiet.’”

Adrian felt cold.

Clara covered her mouth.

Daniel looked away.

Because he already knew where this was going.

“Then what happened?”” Adrian asked.

Lily hugged Teddy tighter.

“Mommy saw me.””

The little girl’s voice trembled.

“She told me to hide.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“Hide?””

Lily nodded.

“She put Teddy in my arms.””

She touched the bear.

“She told me to go behind the chair.””

“What chair?””

“The big chair in the bedroom.””

Adrian knew exactly which one.

Eleanor’s reading chair.

The chair near the window.

A place where Lily used to sit with her mother every night.

“What happened next?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mommy was yelling.””

“What did she say?””

The little girl shook her head.

“I don’t want to remember.””

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

“It’s okay.””

“No.””

Lily suddenly pulled back.

Her face was frightened.

“I need to tell you.””

Everyone became quiet.

Because Lily had made a decision.

A painful one.

“Mommy said…”

She looked at Adrian.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, Adrian needs to know.’”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Those words.

Eleanor had been trying to warn him.

But he hadn’t listened.

Or maybe…

He had never been given the chance.

“What happened after that?””

Lily looked toward Vanessa.

And the entire room changed.

“Then she came in.””

Adrian followed her gaze.

Vanessa.

“No.””

The word escaped Vanessa’s mouth.

Nobody had asked her anything.

Lily flinched.

Adrian immediately noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“You need to leave the room.””

“What?””

“Now.””

Her face hardened.

“You believe her?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“I believe my daughter.””

The sentence cut deeper than anger.

Vanessa stared at him.

Then slowly stepped back.

“I never thought you would look at me like this.””

Adrian didn’t respond.

Clara walked with Vanessa toward the door.

But before leaving, Vanessa stopped.

She looked at Lily.

And whispered:

“You really don’t remember everything, do you?””

Lily froze.

Adrian immediately stood.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Nothing.””

Then she walked away.

But her words stayed behind.

Because Lily’s face had changed.

She looked scared.

Adrian knelt again.

“What did she mean?””

Lily didn’t answer.

“Lily?””

The little girl looked at Teddy.

Then slowly touched the bear’s stitched ear.

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

“She knows what happened.””

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

“What happened?””

Lily whispered:

“Mommy didn’t fall.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian stared.

“What?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Everyone said Mommy got sick.””

She shook her head.

“She didn’t.””

The room went silent.

“She was scared because someone pushed her.””

Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.

Clara gasped.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because this was the moment he had feared.

“Lily,” Adrian whispered.

“Are you sure?””

The little girl nodded.

“I saw.””

A pause.

Then:

“Mommy was standing near the stairs.””

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“The stairs?””

Lily nodded.

“Someone came behind her.””

“Who?””

The little girl looked toward the hallway.

Her voice barely existed.

“I don’t know their face.””

She looked down.

“But I know their voice.””

Adrian leaned closer.

“What voice?””

Lily opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Her hands began shaking.

“What is it?””

She whispered:

“I heard that voice again.””

Adrian frowned.

“When?””

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

“Tonight.””

Everyone turned.

The mansion was silent.

Then from upstairs…

A floorboard creaked.

Someone was walking.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of Lily.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Who is up there?””

No answer.

Another step.

Then another.

Clara whispered:

“Everyone was downstairs.””

Adrian stared at the darkness above.

The mansion suddenly felt different.

Like it was hiding another secret.

Then a shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.

And a familiar voice said:

“I think it’s time Lily tells the whole story.””

Adrian froze.

Because the person standing there was someone who should not have been inside the house.

Someone who had been gone for two years.

Someone Eleanor trusted.

Someone Lily recognized immediately.

“Mommy’s doctor…”

The man looked down at them.

And in his hand was another teddy bear.

May you like

A newer one.

With the same hidden stitching.
