Chapter 3: The Video That Was Never Meant to Be Found
The name on the screen felt heavier than any accusation.
Adrian stared at the laptop.
His hand remained frozen above the keyboard.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even seemed to breathe.
The rain outside had become louder, pounding against the mansion windows like the storm itself was trying to enter the room.
Lily stood beside her father, still holding onto the edge of his coat.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “is Mommy coming back?””
The question broke something inside him.
Adrian looked down at his daughter.
For years, he had tried to protect Lily from pain.
He had hidden the details of Eleanor’s illness.
He had avoided conversations about the night she died.
He had convinced himself that protecting his daughter meant keeping the past locked away.
But now the past had found its way back.
And it was hiding inside a teddy bear.
“No, sweetheart,” Adrian said softly.
His voice almost failed him.
“But Mommy left us something.””
Lily looked at the screen.
“Something bad?””
Adrian glanced at the frozen video.
He didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth was terrifying.
Something had happened inside his family.
Something Eleanor had been afraid of.
And somehow, he had missed it.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Adrian, this is becoming ridiculous.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She forced a calm expression.
“You’re allowing a damaged recording and a child’s imagination to destroy this family.””
Clara looked at her in disbelief.
“Destroy this family?””
Vanessa looked back.
“Yes.””
She pointed toward the laptop.
“We don’t even know what this is. It could be edited. It could be fake.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Eleanor recorded it before she died.””
Vanessa paused.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
“No?””
Adrian stood slowly.
His voice became colder.
“Then why are you so desperate to stop me from watching it?””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
For a moment, she had no answer.
Then she looked away.
“I’m not.””
But everyone heard the hesitation.
Clara quietly walked toward the laptop.
“Open the second file.””
Adrian clicked.
The screen went black.
Then a new video started.
The quality was different.
The camera angle was higher.
It looked like it had been recorded from somewhere inside the mansion.
The date appeared.
Six months after Eleanor’s death.
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
The camera showed the hallway outside Lily’s bedroom.
Empty.
Silent.
Then someone walked into view.
Vanessa.
The entire room froze.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Adrian, turn that off.””
He didn’t.
The video continued.
Vanessa walked into Lily’s room carrying a small box.
She looked around carefully.
Then she opened the box.
Inside were papers.
Documents.
Adrian leaned closer.
“What is that?””
Nobody answered.
On the screen, Vanessa removed several pages and began reading.
Then she smiled.
Not the polite smile she showed guests.
Not the gentle smile she showed Adrian.
A different one.
A cold one.
The kind Clara had always suspected existed.
Vanessa whispered something.
The audio was unclear.
Adrian increased the volume.
The recording crackled.
Then Vanessa’s voice became clear.
“Almost finished.””
Adrian’s face changed.
The video continued.
Vanessa placed the papers back inside the box.
Then she looked directly toward the camera.
As if she knew it was there.
As if she was speaking to someone.
“You should have never hidden this from me, Eleanor.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s face lost color.
“No.””
Adrian slowly turned toward her.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Then back at him.
“That’s not what it looks like.””
Clara shook her head.
“It looks exactly like what it is.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
Clara’s voice trembled.
But she stood firm.
“Not this time.””
The video continued.
Vanessa reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a phone.
Then she made a call.
A man answered.
The audio was faint.
But one sentence came through clearly.
“Did you find the documents?””
Adrian’s entire body went still.
He knew that voice.
Not well.
But enough.
His expression changed.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
On the screen, Vanessa smiled.
“Yes,” she said into the phone.
“I found them.””
The recording ended.
The room remained frozen.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Who were you talking to?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“That was your voice.””
“I mean I don’t know who the person was.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“You’re upset. You’re looking for someone to blame because Eleanor left behind a mystery.””
The words hit him.
Because part of him feared she was right.
He wanted answers.
But he didn’t want to believe the answer could be inside his own home.
“Adrian,” Vanessa continued softly, “think about this.””
She pointed at the laptop.
“Eleanor was sick. She was scared. She may have misunderstood things.””
Clara immediately responded.
“Eleanor was not confused.””
Vanessa turned.
“You weren’t married to her.””
“No,” Clara said.
“But I knew her.””
A long silence followed.
Clara looked at Adrian.
“She spent her last weeks trying to protect Lily.””
Adrian frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Clara hesitated.
Then she walked toward the fireplace.
“There’s something I never told you.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Clara.””
But Clara continued.
“Before Eleanor died, she asked me to promise something.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Clara looked at Lily.
“She asked me to watch over her daughter.””
Adrian swallowed.
“You always did.””
“No.””
Clara shook her head.
“She asked me to watch over Lily because she believed someone else would try to take control of her life.””
Vanessa laughed.
A sharp, humorless sound.
“This is insane.””
Clara ignored her.
“She told me she found something.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Found what?””
Clara looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She never told me.””
“Why?””
“Because she said if I knew everything, I could become a target too.””
The room went quiet again.
Adrian looked at the teddy bear on the table.
Everything Eleanor had done had been intentional.
The camera.
The warning.
The hidden message.
She had been trying to leave a trail.
And now he finally understood something.
She hadn’t hidden the truth because she wanted secrets.
She had hidden it because she was afraid someone would destroy it.
Suddenly, Lily spoke.
“Mommy was crying.””
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl was staring at the laptop.
“When?””
Lily touched Teddy’s ear.
“Before she gave me Teddy.””
Adrian knelt down.
“Tell Daddy.””
Lily looked nervous.
“She was in the bedroom.””
Her small voice became quieter.
“Someone was yelling.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“Who was yelling?””
Lily squeezed Teddy.
“I don’t know.””
“Did you see them?””
The girl shook her head.
“But Mommy said something.””
“What?””
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
And for the first time that night, she seemed afraid of her stepmother.
“She said…”
The little girl whispered:
“‘I know what you did.’”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
Adrian stood.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa’s face was pale.
“I said nothing.””
But Lily wasn’t finished.
“She told someone they couldn’t hurt me.””
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“Who?””
Lily looked down.
“I don’t remember.””
A painful silence followed.
Then the laptop suddenly made a sound.
Everyone turned.
Another notification appeared.
A new file.
Nobody had touched it.
The title appeared on the screen.
*ELEANOR’S FINAL MESSAGE.*
Adrian reached toward the mouse.
Before he could click, a voice came from behind them.
“Don’t.””
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
A man Adrian had not seen in years.
The color drained from Clara’s face.
Because she recognized him immediately.
And Vanessa whispered his name.
“Daniel…”
Adrian stared.
“Who is Daniel?””
The man looked at the laptop.
Then at Lily.
May you like
And his expression revealed one terrifying truth.
He already knew what was inside the final message.
