Thinking

Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Was Blamed

Nobody wanted to open the file.

That was the truth.

Everyone wanted answers.

But answers have a strange way of changing everything.

Sometimes people spend years searching for the truth, only to realize they were happier when they didn’t know it.

Daniel stared at the attachment on his phone.

*THE DAUGHTER WHO BETRAYED HIM.*

The title alone felt like an accusation.

Claire looked at me.

I saw the question in her eyes.

The same question everyone else was thinking.

Was it me?

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But what could I say?

That I had secrets?

I did.

That I knew things about my father’s fears?

I did.

That I had access to his private files?

I did.

All the pieces pointed toward me.

Even though my heart knew I had never betrayed my father.

I understood why people were afraid.

Evidence does not care about feelings.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Do you want me to open it?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

She looked at me.

Then at Maya.

My daughter was sitting beside my mother, watching everything unfold.

She looked exhausted.

She looked scared.

She looked like she wanted this nightmare to end.

Claire finally spoke.

“Yes.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But we watch it together.””

Daniel opened the file.

The screen went black.

Then a video appeared.

The quality was old.

A security camera recording.

A date appeared in the corner.

Three years before my father died.

The camera showed our father’s office.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone recognized it.

The room where my father spent countless nights working.

The room where he made decisions that changed our family.

Then someone entered.

A young woman.

The camera angle was unclear.

But the person looked familiar.

She walked toward the desk.

Opened a drawer.

Removed a folder.

My heart started racing.

Because I recognized the way she moved.

The way she held herself.

The way she touched things carefully.

Claire whispered:

“No.””

The person on the screen turned slightly.

The camera caught her face.

And the entire room froze.

It was me.

My own face.

My own hands.

My own body standing in my father’s office.

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Someone whispered:

“It was her.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I knew what it looked like.

I knew exactly what everyone was seeing.

But I also knew something they didn’t.

That video was missing something.

A reason.

A moment before.

A conversation.

A truth.

Claire looked at me.

Her expression was shattered.

“Emma…”

I turned toward her.

“I can explain.””

She shook her head slowly.

“Were you in Dad’s office?””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Even Claire.

“When?””

“Two weeks before he died.””

“Why?””

I looked at the screen.

“Because he asked me to.””

Silence.

Nobody believed me.

Not because they thought I was lying.

Because the evidence had been carefully built to make my truth sound impossible.

Elena crossed her arms.

“Convenient.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“No.””

She pointed at the screen.

“But I know what I saw.””

I wanted to respond.

But before I could, Thomas stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stared at the video.

“Something is wrong.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

Thomas ignored him.

He walked closer to the screen.

“Look at the timestamp.””

Daniel zoomed in.

The time appeared.

11:43 PM.

Thomas frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Emma wasn’t there that night.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Thomas continued:

“I know because Robert called me after she left.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“I knew she had access.””

Claire looked at me.

“You told him?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Thomas answered.

“Robert knew.””

He looked at the screen.

“He wanted Emma to take the folder.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why does this video show her stealing it?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Because she wasn’t stealing.””

He looked at me.

“She was protecting it.””

Claire stared.

“Protecting what?””

I finally spoke.

“The evidence.””

Everyone looked at me.

I took a deep breath.

“My father discovered someone inside the company was moving money.””

Claire frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Dad told me not to.””

“Again.””

Her voice hurt.

“Another secret.””

I looked at her.

“He was afraid.””

“Of who?””

I looked at the screen.

“I don’t know.””

Thomas answered quietly.

“He was afraid of someone close.””

The same words.

Again.

Always someone close.

Daniel paused the video.

“Can we see what happens after this?””

Nobody objected.

The video continued.

My younger self placed the folder inside a bag.

Then she looked toward the door.

Someone was there.

A shadow.

Someone watching.

The camera did not capture their face.

But I remembered.

I remembered that night.

I remembered the feeling of being watched.

I remembered my father’s voice.

“Don’t trust anyone who comes to you with answers too quickly.””

The video showed me leaving.

Then another person entered the office.

The room went silent.

Because this person was carrying the same type of folder.

They walked to the desk.

Opened another drawer.

And placed something inside.

Daniel paused.

“What is that?””

Nobody answered.

He zoomed in.

The object became clearer.

A small recorder.

A device.

My father’s secret recorder.

Thomas whispered:

“That’s the evidence.””

Claire looked at him.

“What evidence?””

Thomas looked terrified.

“The evidence Robert was collecting.””

The room waited.

Daniel continued playing.

The person placed the recorder inside.

Then turned toward the camera.

This time, the face became visible.

Everyone gasped.

Because it wasn’t me.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t Elena.

It wasn’t Thomas.

It was my mother.

My mother covered her mouth.

“No.””

Claire stared at her.

“Mom?””

My mother shook her head.

“I can explain.””

But nobody moved.

Because the room had heard that sentence too many times.

Marcus looked almost satisfied.

“So now we know.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

He ignored me.

“Your own mother.””

My mother looked at him.

“Be quiet.””

But the damage was done.

Claire looked broken.

“Mom…”

My mother stepped forward.

“I never betrayed your father.””

“Then why were you in his office?””

She couldn’t answer.

And that silence was becoming unbearable.

I looked at my mother.

“Tell us.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was trying to save him.””

Nobody understood.

“What?””

She looked at the screen.

“I knew someone was watching your father.””

Claire shook her head.

“Then why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

My mother looked at me.

Then at Claire.

“Of the person who was helping me.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

My mother closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“The person who gave me information about the company.””

Everyone waited.

“Who?””

My mother opened her eyes.

And looked directly at Thomas.

The room exploded.

Thomas stepped backward.

“No.””

My mother pointed at him.

“He was the first person who told me something was wrong.””

Thomas’s face changed.

“I was trying to help.””

“Then why did you hide it?””

“I was protecting Robert.””

My mother laughed sadly.

“Everyone says that.””

The words hit everyone.

Because they were true.

Every person involved had used the same excuse.

Protection.

Love.

Family.

All words that sounded beautiful until they became reasons to hide the truth.

Claire looked at Thomas.

“Did you know about my father’s plan?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Did you know about the trust?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know about Marcus?””

His silence answered.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Everyone knew.””

Nobody corrected her.

Because nobody could.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed again.

A new message.

This time from the police.

He read it silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He looked at Claire.

“They found the original documents.””

Claire swallowed.

“Where?””

Daniel looked down.

“In a safe deposit box.””

“Whose?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Yours.””

Claire froze.

“My safe deposit box?””

Daniel nodded.

“The box was opened yesterday.””

Nobody spoke.

“Who opened it?””

Daniel looked at the record.

Then his voice became quiet.

“The person who signed for access…”

He looked at me.

“…was Emma Carter.””

The room went silent.

May you like

And for the first time that day…

I had no explanation.
