Chapter 7: The Voice From the Past
Nobody touched the phone.
It sat on the floor beneath the fallen flowers, glowing in the darkness like something that didn’t belong in the world anymore.
Robert Carter.
My father’s name.
A name that should have only existed in old photographs, memories, and stories.
Not on a phone screen.
Not inside a ruined wedding hall.
Not years after his death.
Claire stared at it.
Her face had lost all color.
“No…”
The word escaped her like a prayer.
My mother covered her mouth.
Thomas stepped backward.
Even Marcus and Elena looked confused.
For the first time all day, nobody seemed to know what to do.
Because some secrets can be explained.
A hidden marriage.
A stolen company.
A fake document.
A betrayal.
But a phone call from a dead man?
That was something else.
Daniel looked at the phone.
“It’s still ringing.””
Nobody moved.
I looked around the room.
Everyone was waiting for someone else to make the first decision.
Finally, Claire whispered:
“Answer it.””
I looked at her.
“Are you sure?””
She nodded.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“But I need to know.””
Daniel picked up the phone carefully.
He pressed the answer button.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was only static.
Then a voice came through.
A voice we all recognized.
A voice I had not heard in years.
“Claire.””
My knees almost gave out.
Because it was him.
My father.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably him.
The room froze.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even breathed.
Claire covered her mouth.
“Dad?””
A pause.
Then the voice continued.
“If you’re hearing this, then the plan failed.””
My heart started pounding.
The plan?
My father continued.
“I hoped this recording would never be needed. I hoped my warnings were enough. But if this message has been activated, it means someone tried to destroy the protection I left behind.””
Claire looked at Thomas.
Then at my mother.
Then at me.
My father’s voice continued.
“I need both of my daughters to listen carefully.””
Both of us.
I felt tears forming.
Even after death, he was still speaking to us together.
Like we were children sitting at the kitchen table.
“First, I need you to understand something. I never wanted to choose between my daughters.””
Claire closed her eyes.
The words clearly hurt.
Because for years, she had believed our father trusted me more.
Gave me more responsibility.
Shared things with me that he never shared with her.
Now she was hearing the reason.
“I gave Emma access to my private files because she was the one I believed would ask questions before making decisions.””
I looked down.
My father continued.
“But Claire, that does not mean I trusted you less.””
Claire opened her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I knew your strength was different. You trusted people. You believed the best in them.””
The phone crackled.
“And that is a beautiful quality.””
A pause.
“But it is also something dangerous when the wrong people recognize it.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
Then Elena.
Then Thomas.
The voice continued.
“The person who tried to control my company did not begin with money.””
The room became silent.
“They began with trust.””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“Who are you talking about?””
The recording ignored him.
“I discovered someone was moving pieces around inside my business. They were not stealing randomly. They were preparing.””
My mother lowered her eyes.
I remembered her words.
Your father knew who betrayed him.
My father continued.
“I found out the person involved was closer than I ever imagined.””
The room waited.
Every person wanted a name.
But the recording did not give one.
Not yet.
Instead, my father said:
“I made a mistake.””
Claire whispered:
“Dad…”
“I thought I could fix everything quietly.””
His voice became heavier.
“I was wrong.””
The phone went silent for a moment.
Then another recording started.
A different date.
A different conversation.
My father’s voice again.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
Another voice answered.
A voice that made my blood run cold.
Because I knew it.
I had heard it my entire life.
My mother’s voice.
“I can’t let them find out.””
The room erupted.
My mother stepped back.
“No.””
Claire stared at her.
“Mom?””
The recording continued.
My father sounded angry.
“You don’t understand what you’ve done.””
My mother’s recorded voice shook.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“By hiding the truth?””
“By keeping them safe.””
I looked at my mother.
The same phrase.
Protecting.
Everyone had used that word.
Everyone had hidden behind it.
The recording continued.
“You should have told me.””
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
A long silence.
Then my mother’s voice whispered:
“Of losing everything.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
The room felt smaller.
Claire looked at my mother.
“What were you afraid of?””
My mother couldn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Still nothing.
I stepped forward.
“Tell us.””
My mother looked at both of us.
Then she finally spoke.
“When your father died…”
Her voice cracked.
“I found out he had changed his will.””
Claire frowned.
“What?””
My mother nodded.
“He had planned to move the company into a trust.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
He knew.
My mother continued.
“He believed neither of you should be forced to carry the burden of the company alone.””
Claire looked confused.
“Then why hide it?””
My mother looked ashamed.
“Because I thought I could control what happened next.””
The words hurt.
Because they sounded like every other person in that room.
Control.
Everyone had tried to control something.
The wedding.
The company.
The truth.
My mother continued:
“I found documents that showed your father suspected someone close to him.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
Then Claire.
“I didn’t know.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You didn’t know, so you hid everything?””
“I was scared.””
“For years?””
My mother cried.
“Yes.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Elena suddenly interrupted.
“This is pointless.””
Everyone turned.
She looked frustrated.
“We’re wasting time talking about the past.””
Claire looked at her.
“The past is the reason we’re here.””
Elena shook her head.
“No. We’re here because Marcus lied.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
Her expression hardened.
“At least I was trying to expose him.””
Claire stepped toward her.
“You almost destroyed my life.””
Elena looked at Maya.
“I didn’t mean for that to happen.””
I felt anger rise again.
“You keep saying that.””
Elena looked at me.
“But it did happen.””
Before she could answer, the phone suddenly made another sound.
A notification.
Daniel looked down.
“There’s another file.””
Everyone turned.
My father’s recording had not ended.
There was one more message.
Daniel opened it.
This time, the voice was different.
Not my father.
Not my mother.
Someone else.
A woman.
A younger woman.
She sounded frightened.
“Robert, if you receive this, it means I couldn’t stop them.””
My father’s name.
Another secret.
Claire looked confused.
“Who is that?””
Thomas stepped closer.
His face changed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who is she?””
Thomas stared at the phone.
Then whispered:
“That’s Rebecca.””
Marcus’s face immediately changed.
His hidden wife.
The woman nobody knew existed.
The recording continued.
“I found the documents you asked me to look for.””
A pause.
“I know who betrayed you.””
Everyone froze.
The woman’s voice became quieter.
“But you were right. They’re closer than you think.””
Marcus stepped backward.
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“I’m sending you the evidence now.””
Static filled the room.
Then one final sentence played.
A sentence that made every person there look at the same person.
“Robert, your biggest mistake was trusting your own daughter.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone heard the same thing.
Own daughter.
Claire looked at me.
I looked at her.
And for the first time that day, neither of us knew what to believe.
Then Daniel’s phone received a new message.
One attachment.
One name.
The sender was hidden.

But the file title was clear.
*THE DAUGHTER WHO BETRAYED HIM.*
