Chapter 6: The Secret We Both Carried
The room changed when Daniel said those words.
Not because anyone believed I had done something.
Not yet.
But because suspicion had entered the room again.
And this time, it had my name on it.
I felt every pair of eyes turn toward me.
Some were confused.
Some were uncomfortable.
Some were already searching for answers they had no right to ask.
My daughter felt it too.
Maya immediately stood up.
“No.””
Her small voice cut through the room.
Everyone looked at her.
She moved in front of me.
“She didn’t do it.””
My heart broke.
Because after everything she had gone through that day, after being blamed and humiliated, she was still trying to protect me.
I knelt beside her.
“Maya…”
She looked up at me.
“They’re going to blame you now.””
The words were quiet.
But everyone heard them.
And nobody could deny it.
That was exactly what the room had started to do.
Claire looked at me.
Not with anger.
With fear.
“Emma…”
I knew that look.
She wasn’t accusing me.
She was asking me.
Because for the first time in years, there was something between us that neither of us understood.
A secret.
I stood slowly.
“I didn’t create those documents.””
Nobody answered.
Daniel nodded.
“I’m not saying you did.””
“But someone is.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“The police found evidence that the files were accessed using an old family security code.””
My stomach tightened.
“What code?””
“The one your father used for his private office.””
My mother looked at me.
Then at Claire.
“That code was only given to the two of you.””
Claire frowned.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I never had access.””
My mother looked surprised.
“What?””
“I told you. Dad never let me into his private office.””
I looked at Claire.
That was true.
Our father had always been protective of his work.
He loved us, but he separated family and business.
Especially after he became successful.
He used to say:
“Money changes people. Even people who swear they love you.””
At the time, I thought he was being too serious.
Now, I wondered if he had been warning us.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma, did you ever have access?””
I hesitated.
And everyone noticed.
Because hesitation is dangerous.
Especially in a room full of people looking for someone to blame.
Claire stepped closer.
“Emma.””
I looked at her.
“I need you to answer.””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
My mother looked shocked.
“You did?””
I nodded.
“Dad gave me the code.””
“When?””
“Before he died.””
Claire stared at me.
“Why didn’t I know that?””
Because that was the question.
The question I had avoided for years.
The question that had been waiting.
I looked down.
“Because he told me not to tell anyone.””
Claire’s face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“You kept a secret from me?””
I wanted to explain.
I wanted to tell her everything.
But the truth was complicated.
And sometimes complicated truths hurt more than simple lies.
“Dad thought someone was watching the company.””
Claire looked confused.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you knew something was wrong?””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The silence was unbearable.
Claire laughed softly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because she couldn’t believe it.
“So everyone knew something except me.””
“Claire…”
“No.””
She raised her hand.
“Let me understand this.””
She looked around the room.
“Marcus knew things about my inheritance.””
She looked at Elena.
“You knew Marcus was lying.””
Then she looked at me.
“You knew Dad was afraid.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And nobody told me.””
The words hurt because they were true.
I stepped forward.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Claire shook her head.
“Everyone says that.””
She looked at the broken wedding hall.
“Everyone says they’re protecting me while they make decisions behind my back.””
Nobody had an answer.
Because she was right.
Even people who loved her had taken away her choice.
Daniel cleared his throat.
“There’s something else.””
Nobody wanted another revelation.
But we listened.
“The files weren’t just accessed.””
He looked at the screen.
“They were copied.””
“Copied where?””
“A private storage device.””
Claire frowned.
“Whose?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then looked at me.
My heart sank.
“What?””
“The device was found in your father’s old office.””
I felt cold.
“That office has been locked for years.””
Daniel nodded.
“The police opened it this morning.””
Claire looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because someone tried to access it.””
“When?””
Daniel looked at his phone.
“Last night.””
My breath caught.
Last night.
The night before the wedding.
The night Maya and I had been home practicing flower arrangements.
The night someone had been moving pieces around without anyone knowing.
My mother whispered:
“Who went into Robert’s office?””
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas spoke.
For the first time in a long time.
“I did.””
Everyone turned.
Thomas stood near the entrance.
The older man who had once been trusted by our family looked exhausted.
Not like a villain.
Like someone who had carried a burden too long.
Claire stared at him.
“You?””
Thomas nodded.
“I went there last night.””
“Why?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because I was trying to stop this.””
Nobody believed him.
Not after seeing the footage.
Not after seeing him damage the decorations.
Claire’s voice became cold.
“Stop it?””
“You think I wanted any of this to happen?””
“You helped cause it.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I know.””
That admission shocked everyone.
I stepped forward.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Thomas looked toward the screen showing my father’s old documents.
“Your father trusted the wrong person.””
Nobody spoke.
“Years ago, Robert discovered someone inside the company was stealing from him.””
Claire frowned.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at her.
“That’s what he was trying to find out.””
Elena crossed her arms.
“Convenient story.””
Thomas ignored her.
“Your father created a trap. He moved false information through different channels to see who leaked it.””
My mother looked shocked.
“That’s why he was acting differently?””
Thomas nodded.
“He knew someone close to him was involved.””
Claire looked at Marcus.
Then Elena.
“Who?””
Thomas’s eyes moved around the room.
Then stopped.
Not on Marcus.
Not on Elena.
On my mother.
Everyone noticed.
My mother stepped back.
“What?””
Thomas immediately shook his head.
“No.””
But it was too late.
The suspicion had already landed.
I moved between them.
“Thomas.””
He looked at me.
“Say what you’re thinking.””
He looked ashamed.
“I’m not accusing your mother.””
“Then why did you look at her?””
He took a breath.
“Because Robert told me something before he died.””
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“He said if anything happened to him…”
A pause.
“He said I should never trust anyone who says they are protecting his daughters.””
My mother’s face went pale.
Claire looked at her.
“Mom?””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“No, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at both of us.
At me.
At Claire.
Then she whispered:
“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.””
The room froze.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“What did you say?””
My mother looked down.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I lied to both of you.””
Claire stepped back.
“About what?””
My mother’s voice broke.
“About the night your father died.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because the entire story we had believed for years was beginning to collapse.
My father’s death.
The company.
The wedding.
The fake documents.
Everything connected to one hidden night.
My mother looked at us and whispered:
“Your father knew who betrayed him.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Who?””
My mother opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the lights in the wedding hall suddenly went out.
A scream came from the guests.
Then a sound echoed through the darkness.
A phone ringing.
Not Daniel’s.
Not anyone’s in the room.
A phone hidden somewhere near the altar.
When the emergency lights turned on, everyone looked toward the sound.
A small black phone was lying beneath the fallen flowers.
Daniel picked it up.
The screen showed one incoming call.
One name.
May you like
My father’s name.
Robert Carter.
