Chapter 2: The Face on the Screen
The room had never felt so silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence that came after a beautiful ceremony.
This was the kind of silence that arrived when everyone realized they had made a mistake.
A few seconds earlier, every pair of eyes had been on Maya.
Now, every pair of eyes was on the screen.
Daniel, the videographer, stood near the table with his camera connected to a large monitor. His fingers hovered over the controls as if he already knew what the next few seconds would reveal.
Claire stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel didn’t look away from the footage.
“I’m saying we need to watch this carefully.””
My hand tightened around Maya’s.
She was still crying quietly.
She didn’t understand why the adults had suddenly stopped accusing her. She only knew that a few moments ago, everyone had looked at her like she had done something terrible.
Children remember moments like that.
Not the decorations.
Not the flowers.
Not the wedding.
They remember the faces.
The faces of the people who believed them.
And the faces of the people who didn’t.
The video played again.
The guests watched as Maya entered the hall.
She walked slowly, just as she had practiced.
Then she reached the center of the aisle.
The camera moved slightly.
The decorations above her were visible.
Everything looked normal.
Then Daniel stopped the footage.
“Look here.””
Everyone leaned closer.
The screen showed the large floral arrangement hanging above the entrance.
Nothing seemed wrong.
Claire crossed her arms.
“So?””
Daniel pressed play.
The next few seconds moved slowly.
A person appeared in the corner of the frame.
At first, nobody reacted.
The person was partially hidden behind one of the decorative columns.
Then the figure stepped closer.
My heart started beating faster.
Because I recognized the clothing.
A dark blue suit.
A silver watch.
A familiar posture.
Claire noticed it too.
Her face changed.
“No.””
The word escaped her mouth.
Daniel paused the video.
The entire room stared.
The person on the screen was standing directly behind the decorations.
His hand was raised.
Near the support rope.
Claire took a step backward.
“No, that’s impossible.””
I looked at her.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because everyone else recognized him.
It was Marcus.
Claire’s fiancé.
The man she had just married.
Or was supposed to marry.
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
“Was that him?””
“Why would he do that?””
“Maybe the angle is wrong.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became louder.
“No, you’re mistaken.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I didn’t edit anything.””
“You’re saying my husband did this?””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody knew what to say.
Only a few minutes earlier, Claire had been certain Maya was responsible.
Now the evidence was pointing somewhere else.
Claire turned toward Marcus.
He had been standing near the front of the hall the entire time.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
“Marcus.””
Everyone looked at him.
For the first time since the decorations fell, he looked nervous.
“Claire…”
She stared at him.
“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.””
Marcus opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
That small hesitation was enough.
Claire’s expression changed from confusion to disbelief.
“You were there.””
“I can explain.””
The room exploded with voices.
“You knew?””
“What happened?””
“Why would you touch the decorations?””
Marcus raised his hands.
“Everyone calm down.””
But nobody was calm.
Not anymore.
I looked down at Maya.
She was watching Marcus.
She didn’t understand the details.
But she understood one thing.
The person everyone trusted had been hiding something.
I knelt beside her.
“Come here.””
She leaned into me.
“Mommy…”
“Yes?””
“Did I really ruin the wedding?””
My throat tightened.
“No, sweetheart.””
“But Aunt Claire was so angry.””
I brushed the tears from her cheek.
“Sometimes people get angry before they know the truth.””
Maya looked at the screen.
“Will they believe me now?””
That question hurt more than anything.
Because she wasn’t asking if the video proved her innocence.
She was asking if people would finally believe her.
I hugged her.
“They should have believed you from the beginning.””
Across the room, Marcus was trying to defend himself.
“You’re misunderstanding what happened.””
Claire laughed.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was the kind of laugh someone made when they were hurt too deeply to cry.
“Misunderstanding?””
She pointed at the screen.
“You were standing behind the decorations.””
“I was fixing something.””
“Fixing what?””
Marcus looked around.
Everyone was waiting.
He had no answer.
A guest near the back shook his head.
“You almost hurt someone.””
Marcus immediately responded.
“I knew nobody would get hurt.””
The room went quiet again.
Those words changed everything.
Because they weren’t the words of someone innocent.
They were the words of someone who had calculated a risk.
I felt Maya move closer to me.
Claire stared at Marcus.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.””
“Bigger than it is?””
Her voice cracked.
“You let everyone think my niece destroyed my wedding.””
Marcus looked toward Maya.
“I didn’t accuse her.””
“No,” Claire said.
“But you let it happen.””
That was the first time all day Claire defended Maya.
But the damage had already been done.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“There’s more.””
Everyone turned.
Claire frowned.
“More?””
Daniel nodded.
“The camera from this angle shows what happened. But I checked the other camera near the entrance.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“What other camera?””
Daniel looked at him.
“The backup camera.””
The silence returned.
I watched Marcus carefully.
He looked scared.
Not confused.
Not offended.
Scared.
Daniel connected another file.
“This camera wasn’t meant for the ceremony. It was just recording the guests arriving.””
The video loaded.
A different angle appeared.
This time, everyone could see the entrance clearly.
The footage showed Marcus walking into the hall earlier that morning.
He looked around.
Then he met someone near the decorations.
A woman.
She handed him something small.
Marcus looked around before taking it.
Claire’s face went pale.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The footage continued.
The woman stepped into the light.
And when her face appeared on the screen, several guests gasped.
Because she wasn’t a stranger.
She was someone who had been at the wedding all morning.
Someone who had hugged Claire.
Someone who had smiled in every photograph.
Someone Claire trusted.
Claire whispered her name.
“No…”
I looked at the screen.
Then at Claire.
“Who is she?””
Claire didn’t respond immediately.
Her eyes stayed locked on the image.
The woman on the screen smiled as she handed Marcus the object.
Then she leaned closer and whispered something into his ear.
Daniel increased the volume.
The recording was faint.
But the microphone caught the words.
“You promised me.””
Marcus froze.
The entire room heard it.
Claire covered her mouth.
Because the woman’s voice was unmistakable.
It belonged to her own sister.
My sister.
Claire turned slowly toward me.
Her eyes were full of confusion.
“Your sister?””
I looked at the screen.
The woman standing beside Marcus was my cousin, Elena.
The same Elena who had helped plan the wedding.
The same Elena who had spent months telling Claire how happy she was for her.
The same Elena who had hugged Maya before the ceremony and said:
“You look adorable. Just stay close to the aisle, okay?””
A cold feeling spread through me.
Because suddenly, every detail felt different.
The warnings.
The questions.
The strange way Elena had watched Maya during the rehearsal.
None of it had seemed important before.
Now it felt like pieces of a puzzle finally coming together.
Claire turned toward Marcus.
“What did she mean?””
Marcus looked trapped.
“Claire, listen…”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“Tell me the truth.””
Marcus looked around the room.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the broken decorations.
Then his eyes landed on Maya.
The little girl he had allowed everyone to blame.
And for a moment, he looked ashamed.
But only for a moment.
Then he said the one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“I didn’t do this because I wanted to ruin the wedding.””
Claire stared at him.
“Then why?””
Marcus looked at the screen.
At Elena.
Then back at Claire.
“Because this wedding was never supposed to happen.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
And then, from the doorway of the hall, a woman’s voice interrupted.
“Finally.””
Everyone turned.
Elena was standing there.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t afraid.
She was smiling.
And she was holding something in her hand.
A document.
May you like
She looked directly at Claire and said,
“I was wondering how long it would take before you found out the truth.””
