Thinking

Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

Elena’s smile was the most frightening thing I had seen all day.

Not because it was angry.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was calm.

Everyone else in the room looked shocked, confused, or hurt.

Elena looked like someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.

She stepped into the wedding hall slowly, holding the document against her chest.

The broken flowers were still scattered across the floor.

The candles were still burning.

The guests were still dressed in their finest clothes.

But the wedding was gone.

Nobody was thinking about vows anymore.

Nobody was thinking about cake or photographs or celebrations.

Everyone was waiting for answers.

Claire stared at Elena.

“What are you doing here?””

Elena tilted her head.

“I was invited.””

“You were supposed to be helping me.””

“I was.””

Claire’s face tightened.

“Helping me?””

Elena glanced around the room.

“Look around, Claire. Everything you believed today has already fallen apart.””

The words made several guests uncomfortable.

I stepped closer to Maya.

She was still holding her flower basket.

The petals inside were crushed from how tightly she had been gripping it.

I gently took it from her hands.

“Go sit with Grandma for a minute.””

Maya looked up at me.

“But Mommy…”

“I’ll be right there.””

She hesitated.

Then she walked toward my mother, who immediately wrapped an arm around her.

My mother had been silent through everything.

But the expression on her face told me she had seen enough.

Elena noticed Maya leaving.

For a brief second, something cold crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

Claire saw it.

“You don’t get to look at her like that.””

Elena laughed softly.

“Like what?””

“Like she’s part of your plan.””

The room went quiet.

Elena looked at Claire.

“You really think everything is about that little girl?””

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“Then explain why she was blamed.””

Elena walked farther into the room.

“Because everyone needed someone to blame.””

I felt anger rising in my chest.

“No.””

Elena looked at me.

“No?””

I stepped forward.

“She was a child.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew people would accuse her.””

Elena didn’t answer.

That silence said more than words could.

Claire turned toward Marcus.

“You knew about this?””

Marcus looked away.

That was enough.

Her face changed.

The woman who had walked into the hall hours earlier glowing with happiness was gone.

Now she looked like someone waking up from a nightmare.

“How long?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Claire…”

“How long have you known Elena was planning something?””

“I didn’t know exactly what she was going to do.””

Claire stared at him.

“But you knew she wanted to stop this wedding.””

Marcus looked down.

“I knew she was angry.””

“Angry?””

Claire’s voice rose.

“She destroyed my wedding.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. She exposed something.””

Nobody understood.

Not even Claire.

“What are you talking about?””

Elena smiled again.

“That’s the question you should have asked before you walked down the aisle.””

She held up the document.

“I brought proof.””

Claire looked at the paper.

“What proof?””

Elena walked toward the table where the wedding decorations had been arranged.

She placed the document down.

“Your marriage certificate.””

Everyone looked confused.

Claire frowned.

“My marriage certificate?””

“You were about to marry a man who had already been married.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Someone gasped.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Elena looked at him.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why don’t you tell everyone about Rebecca?””

Marcus froze.

The name meant something.

I saw it.

Claire saw it too.

Her expression changed.

“Who is Rebecca?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“Marcus.””

Still nothing.

“Who is Rebecca?””

Elena opened the document.

“Rebecca Lawson. Married Marcus Hale five years ago.””

The guests began whispering.

“That can’t be true.””

“Maybe it’s a mistake.””

“Someone check.””

Claire looked at Marcus.

Her voice broke.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

Marcus looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Not sadness.

Fear.

“Claire, it’s complicated.””

That sentence destroyed whatever hope she had left.

Because innocent people usually say, “It’s not true.””

Guilty people say, “It’s complicated.””

Claire stepped backward.

“You were married?””

Marcus reached for her hand.

“Please listen.””

She pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Elena watched everything unfold.

I expected her to look satisfied.

Instead, she looked angry.

Almost disappointed.

“You still don’t understand, Claire.””

Claire looked at her.

“Understand what?””

“This was never just about Marcus.””

Elena picked up another piece of paper.

“It was about everything he took from you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked at me.

“You really don’t know?””

“No.””

She sighed.

“That’s the problem with this family. Everyone keeps secrets until they become impossible to hide.””

Claire looked between us.

“What secret?””

Elena turned toward her.

“The company.””

Claire froze.

“What about the company?””

Marcus immediately interrupted.

“Elena, stop.””

That reaction was different.

Before, he had looked nervous.

Now he looked desperate.

Elena smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“That look.””

She pointed at Marcus.

“The same look he had when he realized I found the documents.””

Claire’s breathing became uneven.

“What documents?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Elena laughed.

“You always say that.””

She looked around the room.

“Do you know what’s funny? Everyone thinks this wedding was about love.””

Nobody spoke.

“But Marcus didn’t choose Claire because he loved her.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Stop.””

“He chose her because of what she owned.””

I felt a chill.

Claire whispered:

“What are you talking about?””

Elena placed the papers on the table.

“Your father’s company.””

The room went silent.

My father’s company.

The business that had been in our family for decades.

The business Claire inherited after our father passed away.

The business everyone assumed was safe in her hands.

Claire looked at Marcus.

“You knew about my inheritance.””

Marcus looked away.

“You knew before we met.””

Claire’s voice shook.

“Answer me.””

He didn’t.

And that was the answer.

I watched my sister’s face break.

Not dramatically.

Not like in movies.

Quietly.

The way someone looks when the person they trusted most becomes a stranger.

“You used me.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I loved you.””

Claire laughed once.

A broken sound.

“Then why did you hide a wife?””

Marcus had no answer.

Elena crossed her arms.

“Because Rebecca wasn’t the only secret.””

Everyone turned.

“What do you mean?””

Elena looked directly at Marcus.

“Tell them.””

Marcus remained silent.

“Tell them what happened three months ago.””

His jaw tightened.

“Enough.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at the screen showing the footage.

“You wanted this wedding because after today, you would have access to everything.””

Claire looked confused.

“Access to what?””

Elena picked up the final document.

“The company shares.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Because I remembered something.

A conversation I had overheard weeks earlier.

Marcus asking Claire about her father’s business.

At the time, I thought it was normal.

Now, it sounded different.

Elena continued.

“He planned to marry you, wait until the right moment, and transfer control of your father’s company.””

Claire stared at Marcus.

“Is that true?””

Marcus looked at her.

His silence was unbearable.

Then Claire noticed something.

Something I had not seen before.

She looked at Elena.

“Why are you helping me?””

That question changed the atmosphere.

Because it was the question everyone had been avoiding.

Elena had exposed Marcus.

She had revealed the truth.

But she had also caused chaos.

She had manipulated the wedding.

She had allowed Maya to be blamed.

Why?

Elena’s expression hardened.

“Because I needed you to see what kind of people were standing beside you.””

Claire looked at the document in her hand.

“And the decorations?””

Elena didn’t answer.

My eyes narrowed.

“Answer her.””

Everyone looked at Elena.

For the first time, her confidence faded.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Claire noticed.

“You knew the decorations would fall.””

Silence.

Elena looked away.

That was all the confirmation we needed.

Claire’s face turned pale.

“You let Maya take the blame.””

Elena said nothing.

The room erupted.

“You did that?””

“You blamed a child?””

“That’s horrible.””

I stepped forward.

My voice was shaking.

“You used my daughter.””

Elena looked at me.

“I never wanted her hurt.””

“But you let her cry.””

“She was never in danger.””

“That doesn’t matter!””

My voice echoed through the hall.

“She thought everyone hated her.””

For the first time, Elena looked uncomfortable.

But then she looked back at Claire.

“I needed everyone to stop and listen.””

Claire stared at her.

“You destroyed my wedding to save me?””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“I did what I had to do.””

Nobody answered.

Because that sentence revealed something important.

Elena believed she was the hero of this story.

Even after hurting an innocent child.

Even after ruining the happiest day of her sister’s life.

She still believed she was right.

Then Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

He was looking at the video again.

His face had gone pale.

“What?””

Daniel zoomed into the footage.

“The decorations weren’t just loosened.””

He pointed at the screen.

“Someone changed the support system.””

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Then at Elena.

“It means there’s something else.””

He paused the video.

A small figure appeared in the corner.

Someone neither Marcus nor Elena had mentioned.

Someone who had entered the hall before both of them.

Daniel leaned closer.

“I don’t think either of you did this.””

The room froze.

Claire whispered:

“Then who did?””

Daniel pressed play.

The figure stepped into view.

And everyone recognized the person holding the tool used to damage the decorations.

Maya’s flower basket fell from my mother’s hands.

May you like

Because the person on the screen was someone none of us expected.

Someone from our own family.
