Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Records

For a few seconds, nobody understood what Daniel had just said.

The words hung in the air.

Claire’s own father.

But our father had been dead for years.

The room struggled to accept something impossible.

My mother was the first to speak.

“That’s not possible.””

Her voice wasn’t angry.

It was afraid.

Daniel lowered the phone.

“That’s what the police said.””

My mother shook her head.

“No. Your father passed away.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Then why would they say the payment came from his account?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in that room knew our father had left behind more than memories.

He had left behind a company.

A fortune.

And secrets.

Claire looked like she couldn’t breathe.

“My father’s account?””

Daniel nodded.

“The police traced the payment made to Thomas. The money came from an old business account connected to your father.””

Claire stared at him.

“That account was closed.””

“That’s what they thought.””

My sister looked around the room.

Everyone was watching her.

Waiting.

And I knew that was the cruelest part.

For the second time that day, Claire was standing in front of a crowd of people while a family secret was being exposed.

First, it was her wedding.

Now, it was her father.

She whispered:

“Why would my father pay someone to ruin my wedding?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother said quietly:

“He wouldn’t.””

Everyone turned.

She stepped forward.

“Your father loved you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He would have done anything to protect you.””

Claire looked at her.

“Then explain this.””

My mother had no answer.

Because love did not explain missing money.

Love did not explain secret payments.

Love did not explain Thomas appearing in a wedding hall with a tool designed to cause damage.

Daniel looked at his phone again.

“There’s more.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Of course there is.””

Daniel hesitated.

“The police said they found another file attached to the payment records.””

“What file?””

“A letter.””

My mother’s face changed.

“A letter from who?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Your father.””

The room went completely still.

My father’s handwriting.

My father’s words.

Something he had left behind.

Something nobody knew existed.

Claire walked closer.

“Where is it?””

“The police have it.””

“Can we see it?””

Daniel nodded.

“They sent a copy.””

He opened the message.

Then connected his phone to the screen.

A scanned document appeared.

The paper looked old.

The ink slightly faded.

At the top was my father’s name.

Robert Carter.

Claire covered her mouth.

I watched her expression.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She was a little girl again.

A daughter seeing her father’s handwriting after years of missing him.

For a moment, all the anger disappeared.

Then she started reading.

The letter began:

“Claire and Emma,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen.””

My heart stopped.

He had written our names.

Both of us.

Claire continued reading aloud.

“I spent my life building something for my family. But I learned too late that some people don’t want to inherit what I built. They want to control it.””

The room remained silent.

Everyone listened.

“I discovered that someone close to me was attempting to manipulate the company transfer after my death.””

Claire looked confused.

“Company transfer?””

I looked at her.

She looked back.

Neither of us understood.

The letter continued.

“I made changes before I passed away. Changes that would protect my daughters.””

My stomach tightened.

Changes?

“What changes?”” Claire whispered.

Daniel scrolled down.

The next paragraph appeared.

“The person who tries to gain control of the company through marriage or deception must never receive ownership.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

Everyone slowly looked toward Marcus.

His face had gone pale.

Claire noticed.

“You knew.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“You knew my father had conditions.””

“I knew he was protective.””

Claire stared at him.

“How?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence.

That terrible silence.

Elena suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

“What’s funny?””

She looked at Marcus.

“You really thought you could hide that forever?””

Marcus glared.

“Don’t.””

Claire turned toward him.

“What is she talking about?””

Marcus looked trapped.

Elena stepped forward.

“Ask him how he met you.””

Claire frowned.

“What?””

“Ask him if it was a coincidence.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Elena, stop.””

But Claire was already looking at him.

“Was it?””

Marcus said nothing.

Her voice became quieter.

“Was meeting me a coincidence?””

He looked away.

And that was the moment Claire broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

She simply stopped believing.

“You researched me.””

Marcus tried to speak.

“I cared about you.””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“You studied me.””

Nobody interrupted.

Because everyone knew.

She had finally reached the truth.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Claire, listen to me.””

She backed away.

“No.””

“I did fall in love with you.””

“After you found out who I was?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

And once again, the silence spoke.

I looked at Maya.

She was sitting quietly beside my mother.

Watching adults destroy each other.

I hated that she had witnessed all of this.

A child should not have to learn that people can smile while hiding knives.

Daniel continued reading the letter.

“There is one final thing.””

Claire looked up.

“What?””

The next line appeared.

“If anyone attempts to take control of the company through manipulation, the evidence will be released.””

My mother whispered:

“Evidence?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father recorded everything.””

Everyone looked confused.

“Recorded what?””

Daniel checked the attachment.

“Conversations. Financial transactions. Meetings.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What?””

Elena looked suddenly nervous.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Is it?””

The room changed.

For the first time, Elena looked afraid.

Not confident.

Not in control.

Afraid.

Claire noticed.

“You knew about the recordings.””

Elena looked away.

Claire stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Elena clenched her jaw.

“I knew your father kept records.””

“And you still helped Marcus?””

“I didn’t know everything.””

Claire shook her head.

“No. You knew enough.””

The accusation hit harder because it was true.

Elena had spent the day pretending she was the only person brave enough to reveal the truth.

But she had her own secrets.

Her own reasons.

Daniel looked at his phone.

“There’s one more thing from the police.””

Nobody wanted to hear it.

But everyone waited.

“The payment to Thomas wasn’t made recently.””

Claire frowned.

“What?””

“It was scheduled months ago.””

A chill moved through me.

Months.

Before the wedding.

Before Maya practiced walking down the aisle.

Before anyone knew today would become a disaster.

Daniel continued.

“The instructions were created six months ago.””

Claire looked at Marcus.

Then Elena.

Then Thomas.

“This was planned.””

Nobody denied it.

Because the evidence was everywhere.

A wedding.

A company.

A hidden marriage.

A secret payment.

A child blamed for something she didn’t do.

Everything was connected.

Then my mother suddenly stepped toward the screen.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the document.

“Zoom in.””

Daniel did.

My mother stared at a signature at the bottom of the letter.

Her face changed.

“No…”

I walked closer.

“What is it?””

She touched the screen.

“That signature.””

Claire looked confused.

“What about it?””

My mother’s hands began shaking.

“That’s not your father’s signature.””

The room froze.

“What?””

My mother looked terrified.

“I know your father’s handwriting.””

She pointed at the letter.

“This was copied.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at the document again.

The truth had just changed again.

Because if my father didn’t write the letter…

Then someone had created fake evidence.

Someone had used his name.

Someone had planned this entire chain of events.

And suddenly, the question was no longer who ruined Claire’s wedding.

The question was:

Who was powerful enough to make everyone believe my father was still controlling things from beyond the grave?

Then Daniel’s phone rang again.

This time, he looked even more frightened.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

His face went pale.

He looked at Claire.

Then at me.

“There’s been another discovery.””

Claire whispered:

“What now?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The police found the person who created the fake documents.””

The entire room waited.

Then he said:

“And it wasn’t Marcus.””

A pause.

“It wasn’t Elena.””

Another pause.

“It was someone who had access to your father’s private files.””

My blood ran cold.

Because only three people had ever had that access.

My father.

May you like

My sister.

And me.
