Chapter 9: The Mother Who Never Left
Nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not Ethan.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Victor.
The woman standing at the doorway looked like she had been carrying the weight of the world for years.
Her eyes locked onto Ethan.
And instantly broke.
“Ethan…”
The boy couldn’t breathe.
He stared at her.
A million questions.
A million emotions.
Then he whispered:
“Mom?””
The woman covered her mouth.
Tears fell.
“I’m sorry.””
That was all she said.
Daniel stood between them.
His body reacted before his mind could.
Protect his son.
Protect him from another lie.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
“I’m Emily.””
Daniel felt the ground disappear.
Emily.
The name from the letter.
The hidden daughter.
The missing woman.
The woman everyone said was gone.
But she was standing there.
Alive.
Daniel looked at Laura.
“You knew?””
Laura nodded.
“I found her.””
Daniel’s anger rose.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“Because she made me promise.””
Daniel looked back at Emily.
“Why?””
Emily looked at Ethan.
“Because I was trying to protect him.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
His voice cracked.
“Everyone says they’re protecting him.””
Emily lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
She stepped forward.
“I deserve your anger.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“You let your son believe you were dead.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I had no choice.””
“No choice?””
Daniel’s voice became louder.
“He spent years grieving you.””
“I know.””
“Do you know what that does to a child?””
Emily started crying.
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“Because I lived with it every day.””
The room went quiet.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Why?””
Emily looked at him.
The pain on her face was unbearable.
“Because someone wanted you gone.””
Daniel immediately turned.
“Who?””
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa froze.
Daniel followed her gaze.
“No.””
Emily nodded.
“Vanessa wasn’t the beginning.””
Daniel stared.
“Then who?””
Emily looked at Adrian.
Adrian lowered his eyes.
Daniel noticed.
“Wait.””
The pieces started moving.
“Adrian?””
Emily nodded.
“He was the first person who knew.””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“You knew Ethan’s mother was alive?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Adrian looked away.
“I was trying to fix what I helped create.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You were involved.””
Adrian nodded.
“I was.””
The confession shocked everyone.
Victor laughed.
“So now everyone wants to confess?””
Daniel ignored him.
He looked at Emily.
“Tell me everything.””
Emily nodded.
“I discovered what your father was hiding.””
“The archive?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“I found out someone was planning to steal it.””
Daniel waited.
“Who?””
Emily looked at Victor.
“Victor.””
Victor immediately shook his head.
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
Emily’s voice became stronger.
“You wanted access to the research.””
Victor laughed.
“And your father trusted you?””
Emily looked hurt.
“My father trusted the wrong people.””
Daniel felt the weight of those words.
Everyone had betrayed everyone.
Nobody was innocent.
Emily continued.
“When I discovered the plan, I tried to warn Daniel.””
Daniel frowned.
“You never contacted me.””
“I did.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Emily looked at Ethan.
“Someone stopped me.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Daniel turned.
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“No.””
Daniel stared.
“You?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No, Daniel, I—”
Emily interrupted.
“She found me first.””
Daniel looked sick.
“She knew?””
Emily nodded.
“She knew I was alive.””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“You knew my mom was alive?””
Vanessa had no answer.
The boy’s face broke.
Daniel saw it.
And it hurt more than anything Vanessa had done to him.
Because Ethan had spent years believing he was abandoned.
Emily stepped toward him.
“I wanted to come back.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Emily cried.
“Because every time I tried…”
She looked at Vanessa.
“…someone threatened to destroy your life.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“Who?””
Emily looked at Adrian.
Then Victor.
Then Vanessa.
“All of them.””
The room erupted.
Victor shouted:
“You’re blaming everyone!””
Emily looked at him.
“Because everyone played a part.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
His son was overwhelmed.
Too much truth.
Too many secrets.
He knelt.
“Ethan.””
The boy looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I just want to know why everyone lied.””
Daniel had no answer.
Because he wanted to know too.
Then Emily reached into her bag.
She removed a small metal key.
Daniel stared.
“The key.””
Emily nodded.
“The one Vanessa stole.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
Emily continued.
“But she never understood what it opened.””
Daniel looked at the key.
“What does it open?””
Emily looked at Ethan.
“The final archive.””
A pause.
“The one your grandfather created for you.””
Ethan swallowed.
“For me?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel stared.
“What’s inside?””
Emily looked toward the dark screen where his father’s face had appeared moments earlier.
Then she said:
“The truth about why your grandfather chose you.””
The ballroom doors suddenly slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
A sound came from outside.
Heavy footsteps.
Someone was approaching.
Emily’s face changed.
“No.””
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
She whispered:
“He found us.””
The doors opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Powerful.
Someone Daniel had never seen before.
But Emily recognized him immediately.
And the fear in her eyes told Daniel one thing.
This man was the person everyone had been running from.
The man smiled.
And said:
“Hello, Daniel.””
May you like
A pause.
“I’m your uncle.””
