Chapter 2: The Secret Ethan Carried
Daniel couldn’t hear the crowd anymore.
Not the whispers.
Not the shocked voices.
Not the photographers quietly lowering their cameras.
All he could hear was one sentence repeating in his mind.
“I told him he must never tell Daniel.””
His son.
His own son.
Had been pulled into this.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Buddy…”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to tell you.””
The words hurt more than the recording.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you?””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
Because even now, he was afraid.
Vanessa noticed.
She immediately walked forward.
“Daniel, this is getting out of control.””
Daniel turned.
“Out of control?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You lied about having a child.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
Daniel pointed toward Ethan.
“First, you explain why my son was involved.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Ethan misunderstood.””
Ethan immediately shook his head.
“I didn’t.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Ethan, don’t make things worse.””
Daniel heard the threat hidden beneath her words.
His expression changed.
“Don’t talk to him like that.””
The guests watched silently.
For the first time, they weren’t looking at a bride.
They were looking at someone trapped.
Daniel took Ethan’s phone.
“Where did you get this video?””
Ethan hesitated.
“I recorded it.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“You recorded it?””
Ethan nodded.
“I heard them talking last night.””
“Where?””
“Outside the hotel.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Why were you outside the hotel?””
The boy looked down.
“Because I wanted to find out if I was wrong.””
Daniel’s heart sank.
“What did you think you were wrong about?””
Ethan’s voice became smaller.
“I thought Vanessa wasn’t pregnant.””
A wave of silence moved through the room.
Daniel closed his eyes.
His son had noticed.
His son had known.
And Daniel had ignored every warning.
“When?”” Daniel asked.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“Three months ago.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“Three months?””
Ethan nodded.
“She told me I couldn’t tell you.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Because he was confused.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No. You told me something else.””
Daniel turned.
“What did she tell you?””
Ethan swallowed.
“She said if I ruined the wedding, you would blame me.””
The room erupted.
Someone gasped.
Daniel felt something break inside him.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You said that to my son?””
Vanessa’s eyes became defensive.
“I was trying to protect our future.””
“By threatening him?””
“I never threatened him.””
Ethan looked at his father.
“She said you would choose her over me.””
Daniel went completely still.
Because that was the one thing Vanessa should have known.
There was no world where Daniel would choose anyone over his child.
He walked toward Ethan.
“You should have come to me.””
“I was scared.””
Those three words destroyed Daniel.
He pulled his son into a hug.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan held onto him tightly.
“I didn’t know who would believe me.””
Behind them, Vanessa’s voice turned cold.
“So that’s it?””
Daniel slowly released Ethan.
“What?””
“You believe him over me?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You made him afraid to tell me the truth.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You don’t understand anything.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around at the guests.
At the ruined wedding.
At the cameras.
At the people who had once admired her.
Then she whispered:
“You want the truth?””
Daniel waited.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“The pregnancy wasn’t supposed to matter forever.””
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Her silence was an answer.
Marcus, Daniel’s best friend, stepped forward.
“Daniel, maybe you should get away from her.””
But Daniel didn’t move.
He needed answers.
“All this time… why?””
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
Then back at Daniel.
“Because I knew you loved your son.””
Daniel frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
Her voice became harder.
“I knew if you believed we were having a baby, you would finally stop hesitating.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Hesitating about what?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And that scared him more than anything.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Dad…”
Daniel turned.
The boy was staring at the phone.
“There’s something else.””
Daniel’s heart dropped.
“What?””
Ethan looked nervous.
“I didn’t show you the whole video.””
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What else is there?””
Ethan pressed the screen.
The recording started again.
The mysterious man’s voice returned.
But this time, Daniel noticed something.
The man wasn’t just talking about the fake pregnancy.
He was talking about Daniel.
About his money.
About his company.
And then the man said:
“Once he signs the papers after the wedding, everything will be finished.””
Daniel stepped closer to the phone.
“What papers?””
Vanessa reached for it.
“Give me that.””
Ethan moved back.
The recording continued.
The mysterious man asked:
“And what about the boy?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa answered:
“After Daniel signs, Ethan won’t be a problem anymore.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
The ballroom went silent.
Because those words weren’t about a fake pregnancy.
They were about removing his son.
And then the recording revealed the one thing Daniel never expected to hear.
The mysterious man said a name.
A name Daniel knew.
A name that made him turn toward the crowd.
May you like
Because the person standing behind him…
had heard everything.
