Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Ethan.

Not Emily.

Not even Richard.

Because the woman standing at the entrance was impossible.

Daniel had watched his mother’s coffin disappear into the ground.

He had held her hand when she took her final breath.

He had spent fifteen years believing she was gone.

But she was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably her.

“Mom?””

The word left Daniel’s mouth before he could stop it.

The woman’s expression softened.

“Daniel.””

His knees almost gave out.

Every memory came rushing back.

Her voice.

Her hugs.

The smell of her perfume.

The way she used to tell him everything would be okay.

And then the anger came.

“You died.””

The woman looked down.

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don’t get to say that like it’s nothing.””

The room remained silent.

Because everyone understood.

This was no longer about money.

No longer about the company.

This was a son standing in front of the mother he thought he had lost.

Daniel’s voice shook.

“Where were you?””

She swallowed.

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

Daniel stared.

“Where were you?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“Trying to keep you alive.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Alive?””

He pointed around the room.

“Look around.””

His voice broke.

“Do you see what happened tonight?””

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

Then Emily.

Then Vanessa.

“I know.””

Daniel froze.

“You know?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I have watched everything.””

The answer made everyone uncomfortable.

Daniel stared.

“You watched?””

“Yes.””

“While Ethan thought his mother abandoned him?””

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

Pain crossed her face.

“I’m sorry.””

Ethan looked away.

Daniel saw it.

The hurt.

The confusion.

The child who had spent years being used by adults who claimed they were protecting him.

“You all keep saying sorry.””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“But nobody ever stopped lying.””

Evelyn accepted the accusation.

“You’re right.””

That surprised him.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I will.””

She walked toward the center of the ballroom.

“The night your father died was not an accident.””

Daniel froze.

Everyone became silent.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at Richard.

“He was killed.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Richard’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Daniel saw it.

“You knew.””

Richard said nothing.

Daniel turned.

“You knew.””

Richard looked away.

That was enough.

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“Who killed him?””

Evelyn looked at the people in the room.

Then she answered:

“Nobody here.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“The person responsible was outside this entire plan.””

She looked at the archive.

“The archive wasn’t created to protect money.””

Daniel remembered the research.

The secrets.

The inheritance.

“Then what was it created for?””

Evelyn took a small device from her pocket.

A recording device.

“Your father discovered a criminal network using medical research to manipulate people.””

Laura’s face changed.

“So the archive…”

“Contained evidence.””

Daniel stared.

All these years.

Everyone thought it was about wealth.

It was about exposing criminals.

Evelyn continued.

“Your father wanted to reveal everything.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You’re still telling fairy tales.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You were the one who helped hide the evidence.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

Daniel turned.

“Richard?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He didn’t kill your father.””

Richard looked relieved for a moment.

Then she continued:

“But he helped the people who did.””

The relief disappeared.

Daniel stared at Richard.

“You knew?””

Richard said nothing.

“You knew who killed my father.””

Richard finally spoke.

“Yes.””

The answer stunned everyone.

Daniel moved toward him.

“Who?””

Richard looked at Evelyn.

Then at Daniel.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

Richard’s face changed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

He pointed toward Ethan.

“You destroyed families.””

Silence.

“You lied.””

Another step.

“You manipulated my son.””

Richard looked at Ethan.

“I never wanted him hurt.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“But you were willing to.””

Richard had no answer.

Then Evelyn opened the archive.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Documents.

Recordings.

Photos.

But one file caught Daniel’s attention.

A name.

His father’s.

He opened it.

A video appeared.

His father.

The final recording.

Daniel pressed play.

His father looked directly at the camera.

“Daniel.””

The room froze.

“If you are watching this, then Evelyn has returned.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

His father continued.

“I know you will be angry.””

Daniel felt tears forming.

“You deserve to be.””

A pause.

“But I need you to understand something.””

The video showed his father looking exhausted.

“I asked Evelyn to disappear.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“She didn’t abandon us.””

His father continued.

“She protected us.””

Daniel whispered:

“Why?””

The answer came from the screen.

“Because the person hunting our family was someone we trusted.””

The video paused.

Then his father said:

“And the final truth is this.””

Everyone leaned closer.

“The person who betrayed me…”

A pause.

“…was not trying to steal my company.””

Daniel held his breath.

“They were trying to erase my family.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan noticed something.

A small folder inside the archive.

A folder with his name.

He reached toward it.

Daniel stopped him.

“Wait.””

Ethan looked at him.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“No.””

He looked at his son.

“This time, we open it together.””

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside was one photograph.

And a letter.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

Then his entire world changed.

Because the picture showed Ethan as a baby.

Being held by someone Daniel recognized.

May you like

Someone who should never have been there.

Someone who had been part of the family all along.
