Chapter 8: His Father’s Last Confession
The room went completely dark except for the giant screen above the stage.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Then Daniel’s father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably alive.
Daniel stopped breathing.
He had not seen his father’s face like that in years.
The guests watched silently.
The man on the screen looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this…”
He paused.
“…then I failed.””
Daniel felt something crack inside him.
His father continued.
“I spent my life believing money was the thing I needed to protect.””
A sad smile crossed his face.
“I was wrong.””
Daniel stepped closer to the screen.
His father looked older than Daniel remembered.
More afraid.
“I should have told my son the truth.””
Daniel whispered:
“Dad…”
Ethan looked up at him.
The video continued.
“Daniel, if you are seeing this, you need to know something about your family.””
The room became silent.
“Not everyone who shares your blood will protect you.””
Daniel looked at Laura.
Then Adrian.
Then Vanessa.
His father continued.
“There is someone close to you who will one day try to take everything.””
Vanessa looked down.
Victor clenched his jaw.
But Daniel noticed something.
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
Like he already knew what was coming.
His father continued.
“The person you trust most may not be the person you should fear.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because he remembered the letter.
The same warning.
Then his father said something unexpected.
“The person I am warning you about is not Victor Hale.””
Everyone looked at Victor.
Victor froze.
Daniel turned.
Not Victor?
The video continued.
“Victor is dangerous. But he is only a piece.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
A piece?
His father looked directly into the camera.
“The true person behind everything is someone I loved.””
A pause.
Someone gasped.
Daniel felt cold.
Then the video stopped.
For three seconds.
Then another clip appeared.
Different location.
Different day.
His father was speaking to someone off-camera.
A woman.
Daniel couldn’t see her face.
But he heard the voice.
A voice he recognized.
His mother.
Daniel froze.
“No…”
His father said:
“You cannot do this.””
His mother answered:
“I’m doing what I have to.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
His mother.
The woman he remembered as gentle.
The woman who raised him.
His father continued.
“If Daniel discovers the truth, he’ll hate us both.””
His mother replied:
“He deserves the truth.””
Daniel couldn’t move.
His mother said:
“The company was never yours alone.””
The video ended.
The ballroom erupted.
Everyone started talking.
Daniel stood frozen.
His entire understanding of his family had collapsed.
“My mother?””
Laura stepped forward.
“Daniel…”
He turned.
“Did you know?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
“You knew.””
Laura looked down.
“I knew there was something complicated.””
“Something complicated?””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“My mother was hiding things from me.””
Laura whispered:
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
His son looked terrified.
Daniel immediately softened.
He walked toward him.
“Hey.””
Ethan looked up.
“Dad?””
“Whatever happens…”
Daniel held his shoulder.
“You’re not alone.””
Ethan nodded.
Then Adrian spoke.
“There’s more.””
Daniel turned.
“Of course there is.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
“Your father didn’t just leave a video.””
“What else?””
“The archive.””
Daniel frowned.
“What about it?””
Adrian pointed at Ethan.
“The key Vanessa stole wasn’t for a door.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then what was it for?””
Adrian answered:
“Your father created a security system.””
Laura nodded slowly.
“A system that only Ethan can activate.””
Daniel stared.
“My son?””
Adrian nodded.
“Because your father believed the future belonged to the person who had the least reason to be greedy.””
Ethan looked terrified.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel crouched beside him.
“You don’t have to.””
But Adrian interrupted.
“He does.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
Adrian’s expression became serious.
“Because the archive contains the answer to why his mother disappeared.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“My mother?””
“No.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“His mother.””
Daniel froze.
Everyone looked at Ethan.
The boy’s face changed.
“My mother?””
Adrian nodded.
“The woman you were told died.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
Ethan stepped back.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“She didn’t die.””
Daniel immediately moved in front of his son.
“Enough.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You need to hear this.””
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“You don’t get to hurt him.””
But then Ethan whispered:
“Dad…”
Daniel looked down.
The boy was crying.
“Is my mom alive?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence was the answer.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Her face was full of fear.
Because she knew.
She had known.
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You knew.””
Vanessa began crying.
“Daniel…”
“You knew my son’s mother was alive.””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“Then what did you know?””
Vanessa couldn’t answer.
Adrian stepped forward.
“She knew enough.””
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked toward the ballroom doors.
Then he said:
“It means the woman who created this entire nightmare…”
A pause.
“…is the same woman who has been watching this wedding from the beginning.””
Everyone turned.
The doors slowly opened.
A woman stood outside.
Older.
Tired.
With tears in her eyes.
May you like
Ethan whispered one word.
“Mom?””
