Chapter 12: The Truth Daniel Buried

For the first time that night, Daniel had no words.

Not because he believed Richard.

Because he was afraid he might.

The accusation hung in the air.

Ethan was not supposed to be his son.

Daniel looked at the boy.

His son.

The child he raised.

The child he loved.

The child who had stood alone against everyone to protect him.

Richard watched his reaction.

“That hurt, didn’t it?””

Daniel looked up.

“You’re lying.””

Richard smiled.

“Are you sure?””

Daniel’s silence answered.

Because a tiny part of him remembered.

The questions.

The strange conversations.

The things nobody explained.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

Ethan looked between them.

“Dad?””

Daniel immediately turned toward him.

“Hey.””

The fear in Ethan’s eyes broke him.

“Look at me.””

Ethan did.

“You are my son.””

The words came without hesitation.

No matter what the truth was.

No matter what anyone claimed.

“You hear me?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

Richard laughed.

“Beautiful.””

Daniel glared.

“But DNA doesn’t care about feelings.””

The officers moved closer.

One of them spoke.

“Sir, you need to come with us.””

Richard ignored him.

He looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Tell him what?””

“The truth.””

Silence.

Richard smiled.

“You know exactly what I mean.””

Daniel looked at Emily.

Her face had gone pale.

That scared him.

Because Emily knew something.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

He turned.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

The answer was yes.

Daniel felt betrayed all over again.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Emily stepped closer.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She struggled.

“Your father asked me not to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was afraid.””

Emily’s voice broke.

“He was afraid you would lose Ethan.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

She looked at Ethan.

“Your father knew Ethan wasn’t biologically yours.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The truth.

The thing Richard had been waiting to reveal.

It was real.

But it wasn’t what Richard wanted.

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Then why?””

Emily answered:

“Because your father believed being a father was not about blood.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

The boy was crying silently.

Daniel walked to him.

Slowly.

“I didn’t know.””

Ethan looked up.

“You didn’t?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He knelt.

“I swear.””

Ethan wiped his eyes.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Daniel had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Too many adults had decided what Ethan could handle.

Too many people had controlled his life.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You knew.””

Richard smiled.

“Of course.””

“You used this against him.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stood.

And something changed.

The fear disappeared.

The confusion disappeared.

Only anger remained.

“You spent years collecting secrets.””

Richard shrugged.

“Secrets are power.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Ethan.

“Secrets destroy people.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

Daniel continued.

“You thought you could control my son because you knew something about his birth.””

He stepped closer.

“But you never understood the one thing that mattered.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“He chose me.””

The room became silent.

Ethan looked at him.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“And I chose him.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

Then Marcus’ phone rang.

He checked it.

His expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“There’s a problem.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Marcus handed him the phone.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

“The archive has already been opened.””

Daniel looked up.

Everyone froze.

Richard smiled.

Because that was impossible.

Nobody had the key.

Nobody had access.

Except—

Daniel slowly turned toward Ethan.

Ethan looked confused.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Then Laura gasped.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward the table.

“The key.””

Daniel followed her eyes.

The key Vanessa stole.

It was gone.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I didn’t take it.””

Daniel stared.

“Then who did?””

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Everyone turned.

A woman appeared.

Holding the key.

And Daniel recognized her immediately.

Because she was the last person he expected.

His own mother.

The woman who had died fifteen years ago.

She smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

And behind her was the archive.

Already opened.

And already missing one thing.

May you like

The only thing everyone had been fighting for.

The truth.
