Chapter 9: The Baby Blanket

The blood on the baby blanket was still wet.

Daniel stared at it.

Marcus stood in the doorway, breathing heavily, the blanket clutched in both hands.

Richard was beside him.

Neither man spoke.

Then Daniel noticed something stitched into the corner.

A faded blue thread formed two initials.

*D.H.*

His heart stopped.

Daniel looked at the blanket again.

“Those are my initials.””

His mother made a strangled sound.

“Daniel…”

He turned toward her.

“What is this?””

She could not answer.

Frank looked at the blanket and closed his eyes.

Richard smiled.

“There.””

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“What does that mean?””

Richard stepped into the room.

“It means your mother lied to you before your father ever did.””

Frank snapped, “Don't listen to him.””

Richard laughed.

“You're still protecting her?””

Daniel turned toward his father.

“Dad.””

Frank's face was gray.

“Let me explain.””

“Then explain.””

Frank looked at Evelyn.

She nodded weakly.

He took a breath.

“When you were born, the hospital records were changed.””

Daniel stared.

“Changed how?””

“Your original birth record disappeared.””

Michael stepped inside the room.

“There was another child.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Michael's expression was grim.

“Your mother gave birth to twins.””

The words seemed impossible.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She was crying.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel's mind went blank.

“Twins?””

“One boy.””

Evelyn touched the blanket.

“And one girl.””

Daniel looked down at the initials.

“D.H.””

His mother whispered, “Daniel Hale.””

Daniel's knees weakened.

“Then what happened to the other baby?””

Nobody answered.

Richard did.

“She died.””

Daniel looked at him.

“When?””

“The same night.””

Evelyn shook her head violently.

“No.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“She died.””

“No,” Evelyn whispered.

Frank stepped between them.

“Richard, enough.””

Daniel stared at his parents.

“Mom?””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“She was alive.””

The room went silent.

Daniel could hear his own breathing.

“What?””

His mother lowered her hands.

“She was alive when they took her away.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Who?””

“Richard.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“That is not what happened.””

Evelyn pointed at him.

“You came into that hospital room.””

Frank tried to interrupt.

“Evelyn—”

“You told me she'd been transferred.””

Daniel stared.

“Where?””

“To another hospital.””

“Why?””

“She had trouble breathing.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“And?””

Richard said nothing.

Evelyn's voice broke.

“They told me she died before morning.””

Daniel felt sick.

“And you believed them?””

“I was nineteen years old.””

His mother corrected herself.

“I was twenty-eight.””

She looked at the blanket.

“I was drugged. Weak. I couldn't even sit up without help.””

Frank said quietly, “I was told the same thing.””

“By Richard?””

Frank nodded.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Where is she?””

Richard's face was unreadable.

“She died.””

Michael stepped forward.

“No.””

Richard turned.

“Don't start.””

Michael held up his phone.

“I ran the hospital records myself.””

Richard's expression changed.

“There was no death certificate.””

Daniel's heart hammered.

“What?””

Michael opened a scanned document.

“There was a discharge record.””

He handed the phone to Daniel.

Daniel read it.

*Female infant, stable condition. Transferred from maternity ward.*

No death.

No burial.

No cremation.

Nothing.

His mother whispered, “I knew it.””

Richard's voice became cold.

“You have no idea what you're looking at.””

Daniel looked up.

“Where is my sister?””

Richard stared at him.

Then he laughed.

“A sister who doesn't exist?””

Michael shook his head.

“She existed.””

“How convenient.””

“She was registered under another name.””

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“What name?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he looked at Claire.

She was crying.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why are you crying?””

Claire covered her mouth.

Michael answered.

“Because Claire knows the name.””

Daniel stared at his wife.

“What is it?””

Claire shook her head.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

She looked at Richard.

Richard said nothing.

Claire's lips trembled.

“Her name was…”

She stopped.

Then whispered,

“Margaret.””

Daniel froze.

“Margaret?””

Claire nodded.

“Margaret Morgan.””

His mother gasped.

“That’s my mother's name.””

Michael nodded.

“Richard's wife was named Margaret.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Your mother.””

“Yes.””

The room became unbearably quiet.

Daniel stared at the bloodstained blanket.

“Your mother had my sister?””

Claire nodded.

“She took her.””

Evelyn stepped backward.

“No.””

Claire cried harder.

“My mother didn't know what Dad was doing.””

Richard snapped, “Enough.””

Claire turned toward him.

“You told her the baby had died.””

“She had died.””

“She hadn't!””

Richard's voice cracked.

“You weren't there.””

“I saw the file.””

Richard looked at her.

“You don't understand.””

Claire stepped forward.

“I understand everything now.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why did your father take my sister?””

Richard remained silent.

Michael answered.

“Because of the land.””

Daniel frowned.

“What land?””

“The trust.””

Frank's face fell.

Michael continued.

“Your grandfather's property was held in a trust for both children.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You said I inherited it.””

“I thought you did.””

“You thought?””

She started crying.

“I was told your sister was dead.””

Frank whispered, “The trust required two beneficiaries.””

Daniel stared at him.

“So if my sister existed…”

“Richard couldn't control the trust.””

Daniel understood.

“He needed one child to disappear.””

Richard shook his head.

“You're twisting this.””

Michael stepped closer.

“You forged the birth records.””

Richard's eyes turned cold.

“You have no proof.””

Michael reached into his coat.

“Actually, I do.””

He pulled out an old hospital file.

Daniel took it.

The document was yellowed and brittle.

Two footprints had been stamped onto the page.

Two babies.

Two names handwritten at the top.

*Daniel Hale.*

And beneath it:

*Margaret Hale.*

Daniel's fingers trembled.

“Why Margaret?””

Claire answered.

“My mother gave her that name because she wanted to keep something of herself with the baby.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew all this.””

“I knew pieces.””

“Enough to marry me.””

Claire's tears continued.

“I didn't know you were her brother until last year.””

Daniel stared.

“How?””

“My mother told me.””

“Before she died?””

Claire nodded.

“She told me she hadn't really died.””

Daniel looked at her in disbelief.

“What?””

Claire swallowed.

“She disappeared because Dad found out she'd kept evidence.””

Michael said, “Margaret is alive.””

Evelyn nearly collapsed.

Frank caught her.

“Where?””

Michael looked at Richard.

“That's what we've been trying to find.””

Richard smiled.

“You think you can save her?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is she?””

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

Michael stopped him.

“Don't.””

Daniel turned.

“Why?””

“Because that's what he wants.””

Richard smiled.

“You're learning.””

Daniel released him.

Instead, he asked, “Where is my sister?””

Richard studied him.

Then he said quietly, “Closer than you think.””

Daniel froze.

Richard looked at Claire.

“Tell him.””

Claire shook her head.

Richard continued.

“She found out the truth.””

“Claire,” Daniel whispered.

Claire was trembling.

“What did you find out?””

She looked at Daniel.

“I found a woman.””

“What woman?””

“The woman from the phone.””

Daniel's heart slammed against his ribs.

“Margaret?””

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

Claire wiped her eyes.

“At the safe house.””

“Where?””

Claire looked toward Richard.

He gave a faint smile.

“She won't get there.””

Michael immediately pulled out his phone.

“Call her.””

Claire did.

The line rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a woman answered.

“Claire?””

Claire almost broke.

“Mom.””

Daniel stepped closer.

The voice on the other end became shaky.

“Is Daniel with you?””

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.””

There was a long silence.

Then the woman whispered,

“Put him on.””

Claire handed Daniel the phone.

Daniel could barely breathe.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice answered.

“Daniel.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“Are you Margaret?””

“Yes.””

“Are you my mother-in-law?””

“Yes.””

“Are you my sister's—”

He stopped.

The question was too hard to finish.

Margaret understood anyway.

“I know who you are.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Where is my sister?””

Silence.

Then Margaret said,

“She has been looking for you for years.””

Daniel opened his eyes.

“What does she look like?””

Margaret began to cry.

“Like your mother.””

Daniel's hand shook.

“And where is she now?””

“She’s with you.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Margaret's voice became a whisper.

“Daniel, the woman you married…”

Claire's face went white.

Richard suddenly lunged for the phone.

Daniel pulled it away.

Margaret shouted through the speaker.

“She's not Claire's sister.””

Static exploded across the line.

Then the call dropped.

Daniel stared at Claire.

Claire was crying.

Richard was smiling.

Michael looked confused.

“What did she mean?””

Daniel didn't answer.

His phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

*Look at the wedding photograph.*

Daniel opened the image.

The old photograph from the drawer filled his screen.

He zoomed in.

His mother was standing on one side.

Frank beside her.

And behind them was a young woman.

A newborn baby in her arms.

Daniel looked at the woman's face.

He recognized her.

Not from a photograph.

Not from a memory.

From every morning.

Every night.

Every day of the past year.

His bride.

Claire.

Daniel dropped the phone.

Because the woman holding his newborn sister in the photograph was Claire's mother.

And standing beside her, smiling at the camera, was a younger Richard.

Under the photograph, someone had written:

*The girl was never taken. She was raised to come back.*
