Chapter 4: The Locked Hallway
“Daniel.””
The voice came from the darkness again.
Low.
Calm.
Far too calm.
Claire grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Run.””
This time, he believed her.
Not because he understood what was happening.
Because he heard the fear in her voice.
The hallway remained dark behind the partially opened door. A thin slice of yellow light stretched across the carpet, stopping inches from Daniel’s shoes.
His father moved first.
“Everyone stay back.””
Frank stepped between Daniel and the corridor.
His mother gripped Daniel’s hand.
“Danny, please.””
Daniel could feel her fingers trembling against his.
Then a shadow crossed the doorway.
A man stepped into the light.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
Claire’s father.
Richard Morgan.
He was wearing the same charcoal suit he had worn during the ceremony. His silver hair was perfectly combed, his tie still straight.
There was not a single sign of panic on his face.
He looked at the hundreds of guests staring at him and adjusted his cuff.
Then he smiled.
“Quite a dramatic wedding,” Richard said.
Daniel stared at him.
“You followed my mother.””
Richard’s expression barely changed.
“No.””
“You sent someone after her.””
“No.””
“Then why is Marcus Vale’s contract signed by Claire?””
Richard glanced at his daughter.
Claire lowered her head.
Something in the way he looked at her made Daniel’s stomach tighten.
Not affection.
Not concern.
Ownership.
Richard finally looked back at Daniel.
“You're asking the wrong questions.””
Frank stepped forward.
“What exactly are you doing here?””
Richard smiled faintly.
“I'm Claire's father.””
“You were told to leave.””
“I was told many things tonight.””
He looked at Daniel's mother.
“You, for example, were told not to come.””
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew about that message.””
Richard nodded.
“Of course.””
“Who sent it?””
“I did.””
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel felt like the floor had dropped away.
“You?””
Richard gave a slow shrug.
“She was becoming disruptive.””
His mother recoiled.
“I was trying to see my son.””
“And you were making him choose sides.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“My mother never asked me to choose.””
“She didn't have to.””
Richard’s gaze moved over the room.
“She knows how to make people feel guilty.””
His mother whispered, “That's not true.””
Richard laughed softly.
“Still the victim.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Do not talk to my mother like that.””
Richard's eyes sharpened.
“There you are.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“That temper.””
Richard smiled.
“That's the part Claire was afraid of.””
Daniel turned.
Claire was crying silently.
“Claire?””
She looked at him.
“I didn't tell him to do this.””
Richard sighed.
“Of course you didn't.””
The way he said it made Daniel look at him again.
“Did you force her?””
“No.””
“Then why does she look terrified every time you speak?””
Richard's smile disappeared.
“My daughter is emotional.””
Claire suddenly whispered, “Dad.””
Everyone heard it.
Richard turned toward her.
“What?””
“Please stop.””
His voice softened.
“Come here.””
Claire didn't move.
Richard extended one hand.
“Claire.””
She stayed where she was.
Daniel could see the battle on her face.
Then she shook her head.
“No.””
Richard's expression changed.
It was subtle.
A tightening around the eyes.
A slight movement of his jaw.
But Daniel saw it.
And so did Emily.
“Good,” Emily said quietly.
Richard looked at her.
“You.””
Emily folded her arms.
“You knew I'd come.””
“I expected you.””
“You knew I had the documents.””
“I knew you had copies.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Copies?””
She nodded.
“The originals disappeared from Claire's apartment.””
Richard smiled.
“Everything disappears eventually.””
Emily's eyes hardened.
“Not this.””
She pulled her phone from her coat.
“I sent everything to three lawyers before I walked through those doors.””
For the first time, Richard looked unsettled.
Only for a moment.
But it was enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did you do to my mother?””
Richard sighed.
“I protected my daughter.””
“From my mother?””
“From you.””
Daniel stared.
Richard continued.
“You were obsessed with your mother's approval. Every decision you made had to pass through her.””
“That is a lie.””
“Is it?””
Richard looked around the ballroom.
“Look at her.””
Daniel looked.
His mother stood beside Frank, her face pale.
Richard nodded toward her.
“Did you really think Claire could compete with twenty-eight years of history?””
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
“This isn't about competition.””
“It became one.””
“No.””
“It always was.””
Richard took a step toward him.
“She needed you to stop being a son and start being a husband.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“So she lied to me?””
Richard answered immediately.
“Yes.””
Claire looked at him in horror.
“Dad.””
He turned toward her.
“You wanted him.””
“I wanted him to choose me.””
“You knew what had to be done.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Richard's face hardened.
“You asked for help.””
“I asked you to talk to him.””
“You asked me to solve the problem.””
“I never asked you to hurt anyone!””
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly turned toward Claire.
“Who did he hurt?””
Claire looked at the floor.
Richard interrupted.
“Nothing happened that couldn't be repaired.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did you do?””
Richard’s voice remained disturbingly calm.
“Your mother had an accident.””
Daniel froze.
His mother’s hand slipped from his.
Frank caught her.
“What accident?”” Daniel demanded.
“Her car left the road.””
“I know.””
“Then you know enough.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“I know someone followed her.””
Richard looked at him.
“Allegedly.””
“She was forced off the road.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“Cars leave roads.””
Daniel lunged forward.
Frank caught him.
“Daniel!””
Richard didn't move.
He simply watched.
And Daniel understood.
This man wasn't afraid of consequences.
He was counting on Daniel losing control.
Claire stepped between them.
“Dad, leave.””
Richard looked at her.
“You're defending him?””
“Yes.””
“You've already done enough damage.””
Claire started crying.
“I know.””
Richard stared at her for a long moment.
Then he reached inside his jacket.
Daniel's heart stopped.
Frank pulled Daniel backward.
Several guests screamed.
But Richard only removed a phone.
He held it up.
On the screen was a photograph.
Daniel's mother.
Standing outside her house.
Taken from across the street.
The timestamp was two days old.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Do you want to know why I watched her?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Because she was about to tell you something.””
His mother's face changed.
Richard saw it.
“You know exactly what I mean.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Mom?””
She shook her head.
“Danny…”
Richard smiled.
“There it is.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What were you going to tell me?””
She couldn't answer.
“Mom?””
Her breathing became shallow.
Frank stepped beside her.
“Don't.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“Ask her about the money.””
Daniel frowned.
“What money?””
Claire suddenly shouted, “Dad, stop!””
The room went still.
Richard looked at his daughter.
“Why?””
“Because you promised.””
“I promised to fix your problem.””
“I don't want this anymore.””
Richard smiled sadly.
“You should have thought of that before the wedding.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What money?””
His mother closed her eyes.
Frank whispered, “Not here.””
“Dad, not now.””
“Daniel, there are things your mother didn't tell you because she was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Frank looked at Richard.
Richard's expression turned almost amused.
“Tell him.””
Frank didn't.
Richard repeated, “Tell him what she signed.””
Daniel felt a cold rush through him.
“What did Mom sign?””
His mother began to cry.
“Nothing.””
Richard looked at her.
“Really?””
She stared back.
“You know what you did.””
“I know what I had to do.””
Daniel stepped toward them.
“What did you have to do?””
His mother finally answered.
“I borrowed money.””
Daniel blinked.
“How much?””
She hesitated.
“Thirty thousand.””
Claire looked away.
Daniel looked at her.
“For what?””
His mother whispered, “For you.””
The words didn't make sense.
“What do you mean, for me?””
“You were starting your company. You needed help. Your father and I had savings, but it wasn't enough.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You gave me that money?””
His mother nodded.
“I told you it was my retirement savings.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was proud of you.””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“But what does that have to do with him?””
Richard answered.
“Everything.””
He took another phone from his pocket.
Then he held up a document.
“Your mother's loan wasn't a loan.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Richard tapped the paper.
“It was an investment.””
Frank's face went pale.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“She signed over a percentage of Daniel's company.””
Daniel stared at his mother.
“That isn't possible.””
His mother whispered, “I didn't understand the papers.””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Seven years ago, your company almost collapsed.””
Daniel remembered.
He had been twenty-six.
Two employees.
A mountain of debt.
One desperate month when everything nearly disappeared.
Then suddenly, money had appeared.
Enough to keep the company alive.
He had always believed his parents had emptied their savings.
His mother looked at him.
“I thought I was signing a temporary agreement.””
Richard nodded.
“You signed away twenty percent.””
Daniel felt sick.
“To who?””
Richard smiled.
“To my family.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?””
She whispered, “I found out after.””
“When?””
Daniel stared.
“And you never told me?””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“After the wedding.””
The ballroom seemed to spin.
He stepped backward.
“Why?””
Claire's tears finally spilled.
“Because Dad said if I told you, you'd find out what else he controlled.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“What else?””
Richard didn't answer.
Daniel's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One new message.
*Your mother didn't sign away 20%.*
Daniel opened it.
A second message arrived.
*She signed away 40%.*
His blood ran cold.
Then a third message appeared.
*And Claire knew before she ever met you.*
Daniel looked up.
Claire was staring at his phone.
She whispered, “No.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Forty percent?””
She shook her head.
“I didn't know.””
Another message arrived.
*Ask Claire why she married you.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then he looked at his bride.
For the first time that night, he didn't see fear in Claire's eyes.
He saw guilt.
And behind her guilt was something even worse.
Recognition.
She knew exactly who was sending the messages.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“You know who this is.””
Claire couldn't breathe.
“Daniel…”
“Who is it?””
She looked toward the ballroom windows.
Then back at him.
Her lips trembled.
May you like
“Someone who was supposed to be dead.””
And somewhere behind them, from the locked service corridor, came the sound of three slow knocks.
