Chapter 2: The Red Folder

The woman stopped three feet in front of Daniel.

Up close, he recognized her immediately.

Emily.

Claire’s older sister.

She had the same dark eyes as Claire, but everything else about her looked different. Claire was polished, careful, controlled.

Emily looked like she had stopped caring about appearances.

Her black coat was damp from the rain. A strand of wet hair clung to her cheek. She held the red folder so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

Daniel looked from Emily to Claire.

Claire was shaking.

“Emily,” she whispered.

Emily did not look at her.

She kept her eyes on Daniel.

“You have about five minutes,” Emily said quietly, “before someone in this room starts telling you that I’m lying.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Who?””

Emily glanced toward Claire.

“Your wife.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel, please don’t listen to her.””

Emily finally looked at her sister.

“You've been saying that for months.””

“Stop.””

“No.””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“Not today.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Today is exactly why I’m here.””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“What is it?””

Emily lowered her voice.

“Everything I should have shown you before you proposed.””

Claire grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.

“Please.””

Daniel pulled his arm away.

“What’s in the folder?””

Emily opened it.

The first thing inside was a printed email.

Daniel saw his own name.

Then his mother’s.

Then Claire’s.

He reached for it.

Emily handed it over.

The page was dated six months earlier.

*Subject: Re: Daniel*

Daniel read the first paragraph.

His eyes stopped.

His mother had written:

I don't understand why Daniel won't answer me. I have called twice this week. Claire says he doesn't want me involved in the wedding planning, but that doesn't sound like my son.

Daniel looked up.

“I didn't see this.””

“I know,” Emily said.

He read the next line.

I am beginning to think Claire is blocking my messages.

Daniel’s heartbeat thudded harder.

He looked toward Claire.

“Why did you have this?””

Claire shook her head.

“I didn't.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Yes, you did.””

“No.””

“You forwarded it to me.””

Claire’s face went blank.

Emily took another sheet from the folder.

“This was your sister's reply.””

Daniel read it.

Don't worry. I've talked to Daniel. He says he needs space from you.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“You wrote this?””

She nodded.

“At the time, yes.””

“Why?””

Emily closed her eyes for a moment.

“Because Claire told me you had said it.””

Claire snapped, “And you believed me.””

“I trusted you.””

“So did he.””

That silenced everyone.

Daniel looked at the two sisters.

“What exactly happened?””

Emily pulled another document free.

“The first lie was small.””

She placed it on the nearest table.

“Claire told me your mother didn’t want to come to Thanksgiving.””

Daniel frowned.

“She didn't.””

“That’s not what happened.””

Emily pointed to the paper.

“Read the text message.””

Daniel did.

His mother's number appeared at the top.

Would love to come. Claire says Daniel doesn't have time for me anymore. I don't want to intrude.

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

He remembered that Thanksgiving.

He remembered waiting for his mother.

He remembered Claire telling him, “She called this morning and said she’d rather stay home.””

He had been hurt.

He had not called his mother because Claire had said she needed space.

He looked at Emily.

“Who sent this?””

“My mother.””

“Then why did Claire say—”

“She never saw it.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

She stood a few feet away, tears streaking her cheeks.

“I sent it to you,” she whispered.

Daniel stared at her.

“When?””

“That morning.””

“I never got it.””

“I sent three.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Claire spoke softly.

“Her phone was acting strangely.””

Daniel turned.

“How would you know that?””

Claire blinked.

“Because she told me.””

His father stepped forward.

“No. She told me.””

Claire went pale.

Frank pointed toward the cracked phone in Daniel’s hand.

“Your mother brought this to me last week because she thought she was losing her memory.””

He looked at Daniel.

“She wasn't.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“So what was wrong with it?””

Emily answered.

“The messages were being deleted.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How?””

Emily hesitated.

“I don't know yet.””

Claire folded her arms.

“This is absurd.””

Emily smiled without warmth.

“No, Claire. What's absurd is that you thought nobody would ever compare the records.””

She opened the folder again.

“This is where things stopped being accidental.””

She handed Daniel a bank statement.

He looked at the account name.

His mother's name.

His eyes narrowed.

“What am I looking at?””

“A transfer.””

The amount was fifteen thousand dollars.

Daniel looked at the date.

Three months ago.

His mother's signature appeared at the bottom.

He frowned.

“Why would Mom transfer fifteen thousand dollars?””

“She didn't.””

His mother spoke from behind him.

“I never signed that.””

Claire immediately said, “Your mother helped me with the venue deposit.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Excuse me?””

Claire’s lips parted.

“You know how expensive this wedding was.””

“I thought you paid your half.””

“I did.””

“Then why is Mom’s account on this?””

Claire looked at Emily.

Emily said nothing.

Daniel looked back at the statement.

The transfer went to an account ending in 4418.

He recognized the bank.

“Whose account is this?””

Emily reached into the folder.

“I brought that too.””

She handed him another page.

Daniel read the name.

His blood ran cold.

*Claire Morgan.*

His bride.

His father muttered something under his breath.

Several guests shifted uneasily.

Claire stepped closer.

“Daniel, let me explain.””

He held up a hand.

“Did my mother give you fifteen thousand dollars?””

“It wasn't like that.””

“Yes or no?””

Claire looked around the ballroom.

People were watching her.

Her parents were watching.

The photographer had stopped moving.

Even the waiters had gone still.

Claire's voice dropped.

“She offered to help.””

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

“My mother says she didn't.””

“She doesn't remember.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You just said she offered.””

“She did!””

“You also said she was confused.””

“She is!””

His mother's voice suddenly cut through the ballroom.

“I remember.””

Everyone turned.

She wiped her face with trembling fingers.

“I remember exactly.””

Claire stared at her.

His mother took a step forward.

“I remember Claire coming to my house.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“I remember her asking for money.””

“No, Mom.””

“I remember saying no.””

Claire’s face changed.

It was the first time Daniel had ever seen pure panic on it.

His mother continued.

“Then she said Daniel would be devastated if I refused.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“You told her that?””

Claire whispered, “I was desperate.””

“For what?””

Claire did not answer.

Emily did.

“For a wedding she couldn't afford.””

Claire turned sharply.

“Emily!””

“You borrowed from everyone.””

“Stop.””

“You promised to pay Dad back.””

“I said stop!””

“And when nobody would give you more, you went to his mother.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

Daniel stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I was embarrassed.””

“That doesn't explain the lies.””

“I thought you would leave me.””

Daniel looked at the woman he had planned to marry.

The room around him seemed unreal.

The flowers.

The candles.

The cake.

The white aisle.

All of it suddenly looked like a stage built over a hole.

He looked down at the red folder.

“What's the worst thing in here?””

Emily went silent.

Daniel noticed.

“Emily.””

She slowly closed the folder.

“There are two things left.””

“What?””

“The first is about the night your mother disappeared from your rehearsal dinner.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“She left.””

“No.””

“She told me she was tired.””

“She didn't leave.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What happened?””

Emily looked toward Claire.

Then she said quietly, “Claire had her removed.””

A murmur swept through the guests.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Removed?””

“Two security guards escorted your mother out.””

His father stepped forward.

“I knew that.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Frank looked ashamed.

“Claire told me your mother was making a scene.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Dad…”

“I believed her.””

Emily's hand trembled as she turned the final pages.

“And then there's tonight.””

Daniel's heart pounded.

“What about tonight?””

Emily placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a muddy road.

A car parked beside a ditch.

Daniel recognized the car.

His mother's.

His face drained.

“When was this taken?””

“This morning.””

“What happened?””

Emily looked directly at Claire.

“She didn't drive here.””

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“What?””

Emily whispered, “Someone forced her off the road.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at her.

“Who?””

Emily slowly removed one final document from the folder.

A police report.

At the bottom was a handwritten note from the responding officer.

*Driver stated that another vehicle followed her for 11 miles.*

Daniel looked at the description.

Black SUV.

Tinted windows.

He knew exactly whose car that was.

His eyes lifted.

Claire's father had arrived at the wedding in a black SUV.

Daniel looked across the ballroom.

Claire’s father was no longer there.

“Where did he go?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel heard his phone vibrate.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

He looked down.

A message had appeared from an unknown number.

*Stop asking questions about Claire.*

Another message arrived immediately.

*Your mother was warned.*

Then a third.

*You were supposed to be warned too.*

Daniel’s fingers went numb.

He looked toward the ballroom doors.

The locks were still engaged.

Then his phone vibrated again.

This time, there was a photograph attached.

Daniel opened it.

His breath caught.

It was a picture taken less than an hour earlier.

The angle was unmistakable.

Someone had photographed him standing at the altar.

Beside him.

Claire.

And in the reflection of the ballroom mirror behind them stood a man Daniel had never seen before.

Except he knew the face.

Because that same face was printed in the last page of Emily’s red folder.

Underneath the photograph were six words:

*Ask your bride who he is.*
