Chapter 3: The Man in the Mirror
Daniel stared at the photograph until the edges of the room began to blur.
The man in the reflection stood several yards behind him in the ballroom mirror, half-hidden by a column.
Dark suit.
Gray tie.
One hand inside his coat.
The same face appeared on the final page of Emily’s red folder.
Daniel looked up.
“Who is he?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That silence was louder than anything she had said all night.
Daniel turned the phone around and held the photograph toward her.
“This man. Who is he?””
Claire’s eyes moved to the screen.
Her face lost what little color remained.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel almost laughed.
It was the same answer she had given him earlier.
Except now it sounded rehearsed.
Emily stepped closer.
“His name is Marcus Vale.””
Claire’s head snapped toward her.
“Emily, please.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Who is Marcus Vale?””
“A private investigator.””
Claire shook her head.
“He isn't.””
“You hired him.””
“I did not.””
Emily reached into the folder and pulled out a typed contract.
Daniel took it.
The top line read:
*VALE INVESTIGATIONS*
Underneath was the client name.
*Claire Morgan.*
Daniel read it twice.
Then a third time.
“No.””
Claire stepped toward him.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“You hired a private investigator?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“What does that mean?””
“I needed help.””
“With what?””
Claire glanced toward his mother.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel felt something inside him crack.
“You had someone following my mother?””
“No!””
His mother flinched.
Claire immediately turned toward her.
“I never wanted anything to happen to you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then what did you want?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I wanted you.””
The words seemed to stop the room.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
“I wanted you,” she repeated.
“And every time your mother came between us, you changed.””
His father’s expression hardened.
“She did not come between you.””
Claire ignored him.
“You always ran to her.””
“She was my mother.””
“I know!””
“You made me choose.””
“I never asked you to choose.””
“You made me feel like I had to.””
Claire’s voice broke.
“I was terrified.””
Daniel lowered the contract.
“Terrified enough to lie to her?””
“Yes.””
“Terrified enough to take her money?””
Claire looked down.
“Yes.””
“Terrified enough to have someone follow her?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
Emily watched Claire carefully.
“Then tell him who gave Marcus the assignment.””
Claire’s eyes lifted.
“I don't know.””
Emily let out a slow breath.
“You signed the contract.””
“I signed it, but I didn't give him every instruction.””
“What instructions did you give him?”” Daniel asked.
Claire looked at him.
“I asked him to make sure your mother stayed away.””
Daniel stared.
His mother’s shoulders sank.
Emily shook her head.
“You said you wanted her scared.””
Claire’s voice rose.
“I never said that!””
“You absolutely did.””
“When?””
“The night you called me crying.””
“I was upset.””
“You said, ‘I just need her to understand that Daniel is mine now.’”
Daniel closed his eyes for a second.
The words hit somewhere deeper than anger.
Mine.
Not I love Daniel.
Not I want a future with Daniel.
Mine.
Like he was an object.
He opened his eyes.
“Where is Marcus now?””
Claire looked toward the ballroom doors.
“I don't know.””
Daniel followed her gaze.
“So someone who works for you is somewhere outside this room, and you don't know where he is?””
“I told him to leave.””
“When?””
“This afternoon.””
“Why?””
Claire hesitated.
“Because things went too far.””
“What things?””
She rubbed her arms.
“I found out he had been watching your mother.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“How long?””
Claire whispered, “I don't know.””
Emily answered for her.
“Seven weeks.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Seven?””
Emily nodded.
“Seven weeks of photos. Seven weeks of records. Places your mother visited.
People she talked to. The time she left work. The time she came home.””
His mother's lips trembled.
“I didn't know.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were being followed?””
She gave him a sad smile.
“Because every time I tried to tell you something was wrong, Claire said I was imagining it.””
Claire’s eyes closed.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Did you?””
Claire couldn't speak.
His father stepped in.
“That is enough.””
Claire suddenly looked toward him.
“Frank, you don’t understand.””
“No. I understand perfectly.””
“You don't.””
“I watched my wife sit alone in her kitchen crying because she thought her son hated her.””
Daniel looked down.
His father's voice became quieter.
“I believed you when you told me Daniel had asked for distance.””
Claire started crying.
“I was trying to protect my marriage.””
“From what?””
“From losing him!””
“You were losing him because you were lying.””
The room went still again.
A waiter quietly set down a tray and walked away.
Daniel barely noticed.
He was staring at one sheet from Emily’s folder.
It was a text log.
There were messages from a number labeled Claire to his mother’s phone.
Daniel read the first one.
*Please don't come to the rehearsal dinner. Daniel needs space.*
Then another.
*He said he is embarrassed by the way you act around his friends.*
Another.
*Stop calling him. You're making this harder.*
Daniel’s hand tightened around the papers.
“I never said any of this.””
His mother touched his sleeve.
“I know.””
He looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Eventually.””
“Why didn't you confront me?””
“Because I thought you believed it.””
Daniel’s face twisted.
“You thought I hated you.””
“I thought I had become a burden.””
“You could never be a burden.””
She smiled weakly.
“That’s what you said when you were eight.””
Daniel blinked.
“I don't remember.””
“I do.””
Her eyes glistened.
“You had a fever. You slept beside me for three nights because you were afraid I would leave.””
Daniel swallowed hard.
“You stayed awake.””
“I always stayed awake.””
The quiet intimacy of the memory cut through the chaos.
For a few seconds, the wedding disappeared.
There was only his mother.
The woman who had held his hand through every nightmare.
The woman he had spent the last year believing was choosing to stay away from him.
Daniel stepped forward and hugged her.
She broke down against his shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“No.””
“I should have fought harder.””
“No, Mom.””
“I thought you didn't want me.””
Daniel held her tighter.
“I wanted you here.””
She buried her face against his jacket.
“I know now.””
Across the room, Claire turned away.
Emily watched her.
Then Emily noticed something.
“Daniel.””
He looked up.
“What?””
She pointed at the photograph on his phone.
“Zoom in.””
Daniel opened the image again.
Emily took the phone and enlarged the reflection.
The man's face became clearer.
Marcus.
But behind him was something else.
A black door.
And beside the door was a small silver plaque.
Emily's expression changed.
“That's not part of the ballroom.””
“What?””
“The mirror is reflecting the hallway.””
Daniel stared.
“So?””
Emily pointed.
“There isn't supposed to be anyone standing there.””
His father frowned.
“Why not?””
“Because that hallway was closed after the kitchen fire last month.””
Daniel looked toward the side corridor.
A velvet rope blocked the entrance.
He had noticed it when he arrived.
Nobody was supposed to be back there.
Daniel stepped toward it.
Claire grabbed his wrist.
“Don't.””
He turned.
“Why?””
Her grip tightened.
“I just don't think you should.””
“Why?””
“Because I don't know who's back there.””
Daniel slowly looked at her hand around his wrist.
Then at her face.
“You know more than you're telling me.””
Claire released him.
“I’m scared.””
“Of Marcus?””
She didn't answer.
“Of my mother?””
Nothing.
“Of me?””
Claire's lips trembled.
“No.””
“Then what?””
She looked toward the side corridor.
Finally, she whispered, “My father.””
Daniel went completely still.
“Your father?””
Claire nodded.
“He didn't leave the wedding.””
Frank looked toward the entrance.
“Where is he?””
Claire swallowed.
“I don't know.””
Daniel felt his pulse accelerate.
Emily stepped closer.
“That's not true.””
Claire looked at her.
“What?””
“You know where he is.””
“I don't.””
“You told me.””
Claire stared.
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
Emily’s voice softened.
“You said your father was going to fix everything before the ceremony.””
Daniel turned to Claire.
“Fix what?””
Claire shook her head.
“Nothing.””
“Claire.””
“I said nothing.””
Then a sound came from the corridor.
A slow metallic scrape.
Everyone turned.
The velvet rope trembled.
Daniel took one step toward it.
His mother grabbed his hand.
“Danny.””
He looked back at her.
Her eyes were wide.
“Don't go.””
“Why?””
She stared at the dark hallway.
“Because that is where I saw him.””
“Marcus?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice dropped to almost nothing.
“The man who was following me.””
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
Another message.
Unknown number.
*You finally figured out where to look.*
A second message appeared.
*Now ask your wife what happened the night her father came to your mother’s house.*
Daniel looked at Claire.
She was already crying.
Then the locked door at the end of the corridor slowly opened.
And a man’s voice came from the darkness.
“Daniel.””
May you like
Claire whispered one word.
“Run.””
