Chapter 8: The Letter in the Drawer
Daniel read the sentence again.
*Your father is not the man you think he is.*
For several seconds, nobody breathed.
The basement seemed to shrink around them.
Water dripped somewhere behind the wall. Smoke seeped through the cracks beneath the office door, turning the beam of Daniel’s phone flashlight gray.
His mother stepped closer.
“Danny,” she whispered, “let me see it.””
Daniel handed her the letter.
Her fingers shook as she unfolded it.
Claire stood beside her, staring at the bloodstained photograph.
It was a wedding photograph.
Not Daniel’s.
An old one.
A younger Frank stood beside Evelyn.
But another man stood behind them.
Richard.
Daniel looked at the picture.
“How old were you here?””
His mother swallowed.
“Twenty-eight.””
“And Dad?””
“Thirty.””
Daniel studied the photograph.
Richard looked exactly as he did now.
The same sharp jaw.
The same cold eyes.
The same expression that never quite reached a smile.
Daniel pointed.
“Why is he in your wedding photo?””
His mother looked at him.
“He wasn't invited.””
Frank's voice came from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
He stood there, soaked from the rain, one hand against the frame.
Daniel stared at him.
“Then why is he in the picture?””
Frank didn't answer immediately.
His eyes went to the ledger.
Then to the letter.
Then to the photograph.
Finally, he closed the office door behind him.
“We don't have much time.””
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Start talking.””
Frank looked at his wife.
Evelyn nodded.
Frank took a breath.
“Richard and I met long before your mother and I married.””
Daniel frowned.
“You said you met him through business.””
“I lied.””
Claire whispered, “Why?””
Frank looked at her.
“Because your father and I weren't partners.””
He paused.
“We were competitors.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Over what?””
“Land.””
Frank walked toward the desk.
“Your grandfather owned several parcels outside the city. One of them became the foundation of our company.””
Daniel opened the ledger.
The first pages were filled with dates, account numbers, property descriptions, and signatures.
He turned a page.
A name appeared again and again.
*Richard Morgan.*
Then another name.
*Frank Hale.*
Daniel looked up.
“They were moving property.””
Frank nodded.
“Back then, it was legal.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because the money wasn't.””
Daniel stared at him.
Frank continued.
“Richard had a network. He would approach struggling businesses, lend them money, then buy their debt when they couldn't pay.””
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“The same thing he did to me.””
“Yes.””
“You helped him.””
Frank closed his eyes.
“For a time.””
Silence.
Daniel looked at his father like he had never seen him before.
“You were part of this.””
“I was.””
His mother stepped forward.
“But your father tried to leave.””
Richard's voice seemed to echo in Daniel's head from earlier.
*You inherited what your father signed.*
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“How?””
Frank answered quietly.
“I discovered Richard was forging contracts.””
Emily stared.
“Forging?””
Frank nodded.
“He would create two versions. One for the people signing. Another for the investors.””
Daniel flipped through the pages.
“Was my mother's signature forged?””
“No.””
His mother shook her head.
“I signed my name.””
“But I didn't know what I was signing.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then what happened?””
Evelyn touched the bloodstained photograph.
“I found out.””
Claire moved closer.
“About Richard?””
“About everyone.””
Evelyn looked at Frank.
“I found an account Richard used to move money.””
Frank's jaw tightened.
“Blackridge.””
Daniel nodded.
“The shell company.””
“Yes.””
His mother continued.
“I copied the records.””
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“And hid them.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She pointed at the drawer.
“Here.””
Daniel looked down.
“Why keep them all these years?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Richard?””
“Of what exposing him would do to our family.””
Frank's eyes filled with shame.
“I told her we should go to the police.””
“You didn't,” Evelyn said softly.
Frank nodded.
“I lost my nerve.””
Daniel closed the ledger.
“So Richard never actually owned my company.””
“He owned the debt,” Frank said.
“And used the debt to take control.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“And you knew my mother had this ledger.””
Claire nodded.
“Dad told me.””
“When?””
“Before I proposed.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“You knew before you said yes to me?””
“I knew he was looking for it.””
“You knew why?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me why you still married me.””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“Because I thought I could get it first.””
Daniel stared.
She took a breath.
“Dad told me that if I married you, I could legally access your business records. He wanted the ledger, but he also wanted to know whether you had discovered anything about Blackridge.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“So I was a target.””
“At first.””
“What changed?””
Claire looked at him.
“You.””
He gave a bitter smile.
“That easy?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“The first month we dated, you took me to your mother's house.””
Daniel remembered.
She had been nervous.
His mother had made pasta.
They had sat around a small kitchen table until midnight.
Claire had laughed when his mother teased Daniel about his terrible cooking.
“I went home that night,” Claire said, “and Dad asked what I'd learned.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you tell him?””
“That you loved your mother.””
Her voice broke.
“And that you would never betray her.””
Something in Daniel's chest tightened.
Claire continued.
“I realized he wanted me to become the reason you would.””
Emily stared at her sister.
“Then why keep going?””
“Because I was trapped.””
“Until Michael.””
Claire nodded.
“He came back nine months ago.””
Michael was standing near the doorway.
He hadn't spoken.
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew all this.””
Michael nodded.
“I knew enough.””
“You could have warned me.””
“I tried.””
Daniel's eyebrows pulled together.
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
Michael took out his phone.
“I sent you an email.””
Daniel looked confused.
“I never saw it.””
“Because someone deleted it.””
Daniel felt the pieces moving.
“Who?””
Michael looked toward Claire.
“Not her.””
Claire looked up.
Daniel waited.
Michael said, “Your father.””
Frank froze.
Daniel's father.
Michael continued.
“I traced the deletion.””
“How?””
“Your company's mail server.””
Daniel looked at Frank.
“Dad?””
Frank's face went pale.
“I didn't delete anything.””
Michael stared at him.
“Then someone was using your administrator credentials.””
Frank's eyes narrowed.
“Impossible.””
“Not impossible.””
Emily held up her phone.
“I have the access logs.””
She walked over and showed Frank the screen.
His expression changed.
“The login came from…”
He stopped.
Daniel read it.
*Warehouse 3.*
Michael nodded.
“The old warehouse.””
Daniel looked around the room.
“So someone has been using the warehouse for years.””
His mother whispered, “Yes.””
Daniel opened the ledger again.
A page near the middle contained a handwritten notation.
*Warehouse 3 — Original records — Do not move.*
Underneath was a date.
*October 14, 1998.*
Daniel frowned.
“That's twenty-eight years ago.””
Frank nodded.
“That was the year before you were born.””
“Why does the ledger stop there?””
“It doesn't.””
Daniel turned several pages.
The last entry was dated three weeks ago.
His mother's handwriting.
One sentence.
*He knows about Daniel.*
Daniel stared at it.
“Mom.””
She looked away.
“When did you write this?””
“Three weeks ago.””
“What did you know?””
“That Richard wasn't trying to take your company.””
Daniel's pulse quickened.
“Then what was he trying to take?””
His mother looked at Claire.
“Your inheritance.””
Daniel frowned.
“My inheritance?””
Frank whispered, “The original property.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What property?””
“The land beneath your company.””
Daniel slowly understood.
“Grandfather's land.””
Frank nodded.
“It was never sold.””
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“Then who owns it?””
His father hesitated.
“You do.””
Daniel stared.
“I own the land?””
“You inherited it when your grandfather died.””
“Why didn't I know?””
“Because the trust wasn't supposed to transfer until your thirtieth birthday.””
Daniel went still.
“My thirtieth birthday.””
His mother nodded.
“Tomorrow.””
The room fell silent.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“Not the date.””
“But you knew I had an inheritance.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Frank answered.
“Enough that Richard could lose everything.””
Suddenly, there was a heavy bang from somewhere upstairs.
Everyone jumped.
Michael pulled out his phone.
“Someone's inside.””
Another bang.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Coming down the stairs.
Daniel lowered the ledger.
“How many?””
Michael listened.
“At least two.””
Emily whispered, “Police?””
“No.””
The footsteps stopped.
A voice came from the corridor.
Richard.
“Daniel.””
Claire went white.
Richard's voice continued.
“You have something that belongs to me.””
Daniel looked at the ledger.
Then at the letter.
He slipped both inside his jacket.
Richard laughed softly from the other side of the door.
“Your father should have told you the rest.””
Daniel looked at Frank.
“The rest of what?””
Frank didn't answer.
Richard spoke again.
“The land was never your grandfather's.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“It belonged to your mother.””
Evelyn's face changed.
“No.””
Richard laughed.
“Yes.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Mom?””
She closed her eyes.
Richard's voice came closer.
“And your father didn't marry her by accident.””
Frank whispered, “Don't listen to him.””
Daniel stared at his father.
Richard shouted through the door.
“Ask him why he really married Evelyn.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel's father looked at his wife.
For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Dad.””
Frank couldn't meet his gaze.
“Tell me.””
Frank swallowed.
“I loved your mother.””
Daniel waited.
“But that wasn't the reason I married her.””
Evelyn began to cry.
Daniel's voice became barely audible.
“Then why?””
The door handle slowly began to turn.
Frank looked at his son.
And whispered,
“Because I was ordered to.””
The door swung inward.
Standing behind it was Richard.
And beside him was Marcus Vale.
May you like
But Marcus wasn't holding a weapon.
He was holding a blood-covered baby blanket.
