Thinking

Chapter 8: The Man Who Watched

I didn’t sleep.

Again.

The photograph stayed on my kitchen table all night.

A piece of paper.

A fake memory.

A carefully built lie.

But the reflection changed everything.

Because it proved one thing.

Someone had been there.

Someone had taken the photo.

Someone wanted me to believe a life I never lived.

Ethan sat across from me at breakfast.

Neither of us touched our food.

“What are we going to do?””

I looked at him.

“We find the truth.””

He nodded.

“Where do we start?””

I picked up the photograph.

“Marcus.””

Ethan looked surprised.

“You think he took it?””

“I don’t know.””

“But?””

“But I think he knows more than he told us.””

Ethan grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling him.””

This time, Marcus answered immediately.

“Ethan?””

“Did you send my mom those photos?””

A long silence.

“No.””

“Did you know about them?””

Another silence.

And that was enough.

Ethan’s face hardened.

“You knew.””

“Ethan, listen.””

“No.””

His voice was calm now.

That was when I knew he was truly hurt.

“You keep saying listen. You keep asking us to understand you.””

Marcus sighed.

“I made mistakes.””

“You always say that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Mistakes happen once. Plans happen repeatedly.””

Marcus went quiet.

“Where did you get those pictures?””

I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

Then continued.

“Where?””

Marcus finally answered.

“From Chloe.””

“Why?””

“She said she wanted to show me something.””

My heart sank.

“And you believed her?””

“No.””

“Then why did you keep them?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His voice cracked.

“Why?””

Finally, Marcus whispered,

“Because I was angry.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Angry at who?””

“You.””

I felt the word hit me.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Marcus continued.

“I felt like after everything, you were the one everyone supported.””

I stared at the phone.

“You cheated.””

“I know.””

“You broke our family.””

“I know.””

“Then why was I the enemy?””

His voice became smaller.

“Because it was easier.””

There it was again.

That word.

Easier.

I felt tears gather.

Marcus wasn’t a monster.

That would have been easier.

He was something more painful.

A person who knew better.

A person who still chose wrong.

Ethan took the phone.

“I don’t think I can talk to you right now.””

“Ethan—”

“No.””

A pause.

Then softer:

“I need time.””

He ended the call.

For a while, we sat silently.

Then Ethan said,

“I hate that I still love him.””

I looked at him.

“That’s normal.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“How can I love someone who hurt you?””

“Because he’s still your father.””

Ethan looked down.

“I don’t want to become like him.””

My heart broke.

I reached across the table.

“You won’t.””

“How do you know?””

“Because you’re worried about it.””

He looked at me.

“People who don’t care about hurting others don’t ask that question.””

That afternoon, Rebecca called.

“I found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“Chloe’s original files.””

“How?””

“I still have access to some company archives.””

Ethan grabbed a notebook.

“Where are you?””

Rebecca gave us an address.

A small office building downtown.

When we arrived, she was waiting.

She looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not stopping this sooner.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You’re helping now.””

Rebecca gave him a sad smile.

“I wish that was enough.””

She opened her laptop.

“I found a folder Chloe created.””

The folder name appeared.

*Angela Replacement Plan.*

My chest tightened.

Ethan stared.

“She named it that?””

Rebecca nodded.

“She wasn’t hiding what she wanted.””

Inside were documents.

Notes.

Schedules.

Messages.

Then one file caught my attention.

*Final Conversation.*

I clicked it.

The document opened.

It was a script.

A script for a conversation Chloe planned to have with Ethan.

The first line made me feel sick.

Ethan needs to believe his mother chose herself over him.

I scrolled.

Every sentence was planned.

Every emotion predicted.

Every reaction calculated.

“She was going to tell him I abandoned him,” I whispered.

Rebecca nodded.

“She wanted him to believe you left emotionally years ago.””

Ethan looked horrified.

“She was going to make me hate her.””

Nobody answered.

Because yes.

That was exactly what she wanted.

Then Ethan noticed another file.

“What’s this?””

He opened it.

A video.

Recorded two weeks before graduation.

We pressed play.

Chloe appeared on screen.

Talking to Marcus.

The camera angle was hidden.

Maybe Rebecca had found it from security footage.

Chloe crossed her arms.

“I’m tired of waiting.””

Marcus sighed.

“We have to be careful.””

“No.””

Chloe shook her head.

“Ethan is leaving soon. This is our last chance.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked nervous.

“What if Angela finds out?””

Chloe smiled.

“She won’t.””

“How do you know?””

“Because she’s predictable.””

I felt cold.

Then Chloe said something that changed everything.

“She doesn’t know the biggest secret.””

Ethan leaned closer.

“What secret?””

The video continued.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Don’t go there.””

Chloe smiled.

“Why? Because it makes you look bad?””

Silence.

Then she whispered,

“The truth about Ethan’s birth.””

The room went completely still.

My blood ran cold.

Ethan looked at me.

“What does she mean?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t understand either.

Then the video ended.

And for the first time in eighteen years…

I wondered if there was something about my own son’s story that even I didn’t know.
