Chapter 7: The Secret She Saved
The comment sat beneath Ethan’s post for less than a minute.
Four words.
Four words that made my entire body go cold.
*You still don’t know.*
Ethan stared at the screen.
I watched the anger leave his face.
Not because he was no longer angry.
Because something worse replaced it.
Fear.
“What does she mean?”” he whispered.
I didn’t answer.
Because I had no idea.
And somehow, that scared me more.
The internet had turned into a courtroom overnight.
People who knew our family had shared opinions.
Some defended me.
Some defended Chloe.
Some said they didn’t know enough to judge.
But Chloe’s comment was different.
It wasn’t an apology.
It wasn’t a denial.
It was a warning.
Ethan looked at me.
“Should I respond?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because that’s what she wants.””
He frowned.
“What?””
“She wants attention. She wants everyone asking questions.””
Ethan looked back at the screen.
“She’s already doing that.””
I knew he was right.
Within minutes, people were replying.
What don’t they know?
Did something else happen?
Is Angela hiding something?
The same pattern.
Create doubt.
Let people fill in the blanks.
That was Chloe’s talent.
She didn’t need to destroy someone directly.
She just needed to make people question them.
My phone rang.
Marcus.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“Hello?””
His voice was tense.
“Did you see what Chloe posted?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Angela…”
“What?””
“You need to talk to Ethan before she does.””
My heart tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Another pause.
And that pause told me everything.
“You know something.””
“No.””
“Marcus.””
He exhaled.
“I know there are things she could use against you.””
I looked at Ethan.
He was watching me.
“What things?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
“I don’t want to do this over the phone.””
My grip tightened.
“Do what?””
“The past.””
I closed my eyes.
“The past that you helped her rewrite?””
“That’s not fair.””
“Isn’t it?””
Silence.
Then Marcus said,
“She has something from before the divorce.””
My stomach dropped.
“Something about me?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
“You don’t know?””
“I know Chloe had been looking into old records.””
“Records?””
Marcus became quieter.
“She was trying to find anything that would make Ethan question you.””
I felt sick.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought she would stop.””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“You always think people will stop after they’ve already hurt me.””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Because he knew it was true.
I ended the call.
Ethan stood immediately.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
He stepped closer.
“Mom.””
I hated that he sounded afraid.
I hated that my son was carrying the weight of adult mistakes.
“I need to tell you something.””
He sat down.
“Okay.””
I took a breath.
“Your father and I weren’t perfect.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You know we divorced. You know he cheated. But there are things you don’t know about the months before.””
Ethan listened.
And I told him.
Not everything.
Not yet.
But enough.
I told him about the nights Marcus stayed away.
The excuses.
The messages.
The woman I discovered.
The way our marriage collapsed slowly before it officially ended.
When I finished, Ethan was quiet.
Then he asked,
“Did Chloe know?””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
But deep down, I had a terrible feeling.
She knew.
People like Chloe always knew exactly where to look.
That evening, we received an envelope.
No return address.
No name.
Just our address.
Ethan picked it up from the front porch.
“Mom.””
Something about his voice made me stand.
“What?””
He held it out.
“I think this is what she meant.””
My hands felt numb as I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Old ones.
From years ago.
I recognized myself immediately.
But not the version I remembered.
The first photo showed me outside a hotel.
Standing beside a man.
A man who was not Marcus.
My breath caught.
Ethan looked at the picture.
Then at me.
“Mom?””
I stared.
Because I knew that man.
But the picture was impossible.
I had never been there.
Never with him.
“This isn’t real.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“I’ve never seen that hotel.””
He picked up another picture.
Then another.
All carefully arranged.
All designed to tell a story.
A story where I was the betrayer.
A story where I was the one who destroyed our family.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Chloe.
I opened it.
Now you understand how it feels.
I stared at the words.
Then another message appeared.
You took my family away from me.
I showed Ethan.
His expression changed.
“She’s not trying to expose you.””
“No.””
“She’s trying to punish you.””
I nodded.
And then Ethan noticed something.
Something I had missed.
“Mom.””
“What?””
He pointed at the photograph.
“The reflection.””
I looked closer.
In the hotel window behind me was a reflection.
A person holding the camera.
A person standing nearby.
A person who wasn’t supposed to be there.
Ethan grabbed his phone.
He zoomed in.
His face went pale.
“Mom…”
“What?””
He turned the screen toward me.
The reflection was blurry.
But clear enough.
The person holding the camera was wearing a watch.
May you like
A watch I recognized.
A watch Marcus had worn every day for fifteen years.
