Thinking

Chapter 2: The Lie She Built

The field emptied slowly.

Families left carrying flowers and balloons.

Graduates took pictures near the school sign.

Everyone else moved on to celebrate.

But my family stood frozen in the middle of the football field.

Chloe held her phone like it was a weapon.

Ethan stared at her.

“Proof of what?””

She looked at me first.

That was the part I noticed.

Not him.

Me.

Like she wanted me to know this was aimed at me.

“I think your mother should explain.””

My stomach tightened.

“Explain what?””

Chloe tilted her head.

“Interesting.””

“What is?””

“You always act confused.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Are you going to let her talk to me like this?””

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

That hurt.

Still.

After all these years, his silence still had the ability to hurt.

Ethan stepped between us.

“Stop.””

Chloe blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“You’re doing that thing.””

“What thing?””

“The thing where you make everything dramatic and then pretend you’re just asking questions.””

Her expression changed.

For a moment, she looked angry.

Then she smiled.

A fake smile.

The same one she wore when other people were watching.

“I’m only trying to protect you.””

Ethan laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“From my mom?””

Chloe sighed.

“Ethan, you’re eighteen now. You deserve the truth.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“Then tell him.””

She looked surprised.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“Okay.””

She unlocked her phone.

“When your father and I got married, we wanted to include you in our new family.””

Ethan frowned.

“Okay?””

“But your mother made that difficult.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Chloe continued.

“She told people I was replacing her.””

“I never said that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

She turned the phone toward Ethan.

“There are messages.””

My son took the phone.

I watched his face.

At first, confusion.

Then concentration.

Then anger.

I stepped closer.

“What messages?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan?””

He handed the phone to me.

I looked down.

My heart stopped.

They were screenshots.

Text messages.

My name at the top.

Messages that appeared to show me saying things I had never said.

Chloe is trying too hard.

She will never be his real mother.

I don’t want her acting like she raised him.

I looked up.

“This is fake.””

Chloe immediately smiled.

“Of course you’d say that.””

“Because it is.””

“Ethan can decide.””

I looked at my son.

He was staring at the screen.

And for the first time all day…

I was afraid.

Not because I thought he believed her.

But because I knew what this looked like.

A mother’s worst nightmare wasn’t losing an argument.

It was watching your child wonder if you were the villain.

“Ethan,” I said softly.

He looked at me.

“Did you send these?””

The question broke something inside me.

Not because he asked.

Because he looked like he hated asking.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I never said those things.””

Chloe crossed her arms.

“Then why are they on my phone?””

I looked at the screenshots again.

The wording was wrong.

The punctuation was wrong.

I knew myself.

I knew my words.

And these weren’t mine.

“Because someone made them.””

Chloe laughed.

“Someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

She smiled.

“That’s convenient.””

Before I could answer, Ethan walked away.

Just a few steps.

But it felt like a mile.

“Ethan.””

He rubbed his face.

“I need a minute.””

My heart dropped.

“I understand.””

“No, Mom.””

He looked at me.

“I’m not saying I believe her.””

I nodded.

“But I need to understand what’s happening.””

“I know.””

His voice softened.

“I just…”

He looked down.

“Why would someone do this?””

I had no answer.

Because I had been asking myself the same thing.

Why would anyone work this hard to destroy a relationship between a mother and her son?

Then I remembered every little thing.

The missing dinner invitations.

The comments.

The way Chloe always positioned herself between Marcus and me.

The way she slowly erased me.

This wasn’t new.

This was planned.

Marcus finally spoke.

“Angela, maybe we should all go home and talk privately.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“Not anymore.””

For years, I had chosen peace.

I had swallowed comments.

I had ignored insults.

I had told myself Ethan was happy, and that was enough.

But watching him stand there with doubt in his eyes changed something.

“What do you mean?””

I looked at Marcus.

“I mean I’m done pretending this is normal.””

Chloe rolled her eyes.

“Here we go.””

“No.””

I faced her.

“You don’t get to destroy my relationship with my son and call me dramatic when I defend myself.””

Her smile disappeared.

Ethan looked at me.

And I saw something.

Not doubt.

Something else.

Recognition.

Maybe he was finally seeing what I had seen.

Chloe’s expression changed.

“You’re making a scene.””

I laughed quietly.

“You made my son’s graduation about proving I didn’t belong.””

People nearby turned.

She lowered her voice.

“You should be careful.””

A chill went through me.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She smiled.

“It’s advice.””

Then she leaned closer.

“Because if you keep pushing, Ethan might learn things about you that even he doesn’t know.””

My blood ran cold.

“What things?””

She stepped back.

“Ask your son.””

Then she walked away.

Marcus followed her.

But before leaving, he looked at Ethan.

“Call me later.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

They walked across the field.

Leaving us behind.

I watched them disappear.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Mom.””

I turned.

“Yes?””

He held the phone out.

“I want to see your phone.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I want to check something.””

“Ethan…”

“Please.””

The word hurt.

But I handed it to him.

He searched.

Messages.

Photos.

Emails.

Anything.

Minutes passed.

Then his eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

He looked up.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

There was a message.

From my phone.

Sent six months earlier.

To Chloe.

Except I had never sent it.

And underneath the message was a reply.

A reply from Chloe.

Three words.

Three words that made my entire body go numb.

Because they revealed she had known.

She had known the messages were fake.

And she had been waiting for this day.

Ethan read the screen again.

Then he whispered,

“Mom…”

His voice changed.

“Why would Chloe send herself a message from your phone?””

I stared at the screen.

Because suddenly, the question wasn’t whether I had lied.

The question was much worse.

May you like

How long had Chloe been setting me up?

And what else had she already prepared?
