Chapter 13: The Secret Between Two Brothers

Ethan didn’t say anything.

That was the part that scared me most.

Anger I could handle.

Questions I could answer.

But silence from my son felt like standing at the edge of a cliff and waiting to see if the ground would disappear.

He stared at me.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Mom…”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Who is my biological father?””

The room went still.

I looked at Marcus.

He closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

He knew this moment would come.

He knew the truth could no longer stay buried.

I took a breath.

“Your father is Marcus.””

Ethan frowned.

“But you just said…”

“I said the first person who held you wasn’t Marcus.””

I swallowed.

“There’s a difference.””

His confusion deepened.

“Then explain.””

I sat down.

Because my legs suddenly felt weak.

“Ethan, when you were born, there was an emergency.””

He listened.

“Your birth was complicated. You had trouble breathing immediately after delivery.””

His face softened.

“I never knew that.””

“I know.””

I looked down.

“You were taken to another room.””

I remembered it clearly.

The bright lights.

The alarms.

The nurses moving quickly.

The sound of my own heartbeat louder than everything else.

“Marcus was outside with the doctors.””

I paused.

“But he wasn’t the first person to see you.””

“Who was?””

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

Marcus looked up.

Ethan frowned.

“Who is Daniel?””

My throat tightened.

“Your father’s brother.””

Silence.

“Uncle Daniel?””

I nodded.

“You never met him.””

“Why?””

I looked at Marcus.

Because this was his story too.

Marcus finally spoke.

“Because I cut him out of our lives.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“Why?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because I was angry.””

“About what?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Because Daniel knew something about me that I didn’t want anyone to know.””

My heart tightened.

Ethan looked between us.

“What?””

Marcus sat down.

“I was not a good person back then.””

The words seemed to cost him.

“Before you were born, before the affair, before everything fell apart…”

He looked at me.

“I was struggling.””

I remembered.

The late nights.

The drinking.

The anger.

The way he slowly became someone I didn’t recognize.

“Daniel was the only person who confronted me.””

Marcus continued.

“He told me I was destroying my family.””

“And?””

“I hated him for being right.””

The room was quiet.

I looked at Ethan.

“Your uncle was the person who convinced Marcus to stay when I was pregnant.””

Ethan frowned.

“Then why don’t I know him?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because after you were born, Daniel and I had a fight.””

“What kind of fight?””

“The kind where people say things they can’t take back.””

I looked at Marcus.

“But that’s not the whole story.””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Tell him.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Daniel found out about my affair.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he told you to fix it.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

The answer was quiet.

Honest.

Ethan looked away.

“So where does Chloe fit into this?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Marcus said,

“She found Daniel.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Marcus nodded.

“Months ago.””

Ethan stood.

“She found someone you hid from us?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Because Daniel knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The truth about the divorce.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Ethan turned toward me.

“What truth?””

I looked at him.

“I never told you everything because I wanted you to have a relationship with your father.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“Mom…”

“I didn’t want you growing up believing one parent was good and one was bad.””

I looked at Marcus.

“But your father made choices.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Then he looked at Ethan.

“And Daniel knew I was the one who caused the damage.””

The door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

His face carried the same eyes as Marcus.

Ethan froze.

The stranger looked at him.

And whispered,

“You look exactly like your mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stood.

“Daniel.””

Ethan looked between them.

“This is him?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The room felt unreal.

After eighteen years, a missing piece of the family had walked back through the door.

Daniel stepped inside.

“I didn’t want to come.””

Marcus looked away.

“I know.””

“But Chloe forced my hand.””

My heart tightened.

“How?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She threatened to tell Ethan a version of the story that would destroy everyone.””

Ethan’s voice was cold.

“What version?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“The version where your mother cheated.””

The room went silent.

I felt the old pain return.

The same accusation.

The same weapon.

Again.

Daniel continued.

“Chloe found old messages.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“What messages?””

“Fake ones.””

My heart stopped.

Again.

Fake.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“She has been building this story for months.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Why?””

Daniel answered immediately.

“Because she wanted you isolated.””

The words landed.

“She wanted you to believe every person who loved you had lied.””

Ethan looked down.

Daniel reached into his jacket.

“I brought something.””

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“This is why Chloe was afraid of me.””

Marcus looked at it.

“What is that?””

Daniel answered.

“Proof.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Handwritten.

From years ago.

A letter Marcus had written.

A confession.

My hands shook.

Ethan read over my shoulder.

And then he saw the final line.

The line that changed everything.

Angela never betrayed me. I betrayed her.

Ethan looked at his father.

Marcus closed his eyes.

May you like

And for the first time…

he didn’t try to defend himself.
