Chapter 9: The Father Behind The Shadows

For several seconds, nobody in the room breathed.

Michael kept the phone pressed against his ear.

The voice on the other end belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.

Emily Carter.

The woman whose name had haunted the night.

The woman connected to Lucas.

The woman who had somehow been hidden from him for eight years.

And now she had said something impossible.

*Your father.*

Michael's face changed.

Rachel noticed first.

"What did she say?""

Michael slowly lowered the phone.

But Emily's voice still came through.

"Michael?""

He lifted it again.

"Stay on the line.""

His eyes moved around the room.

Victoria was crying.

Sarah looked terrified.

Rachel looked like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.

"My father is behind this?""

Emily was silent.

Then:

"Yes.""

Michael felt anger rise through him.

"My father died six years ago.""

"I know.""

"Then explain.""

"I can't.""

Her voice shook.

"Not over the phone.""

Michael looked toward the dark windows.

The mansion suddenly felt exposed.

"Where are you?""

Another pause.

Then Emily answered:

"An old farmhouse outside the city.""

"Give me the address.""

"Michael...""

"Give me the address.""

Her breathing changed.

Like she was afraid.

"Before you come, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"I didn't leave because I wanted to.""

Michael clenched his jaw.

"Then why?""

"Because someone threatened my life.""

His eyes moved to Victoria.

"Who?""

Emily whispered:

"Your father.""

The words cut deeper than he expected.

Michael remembered his father differently.

Richard Harrington.

A powerful man.

A strict man.

A man who built the foundation that became the empire Michael inherited.

A man who taught him that weakness was dangerous.

A man who always said:

"Family is the only thing you can trust.""

Now Michael wondered if that had ever been true.

"Why would my father do this?""

Emily answered quietly.

"Because he believed your children belonged to the Harrington legacy.""

Michael frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"It means he didn't see them as children.""

A pause.

"He saw them as heirs.""

The room became silent.

Michael looked at Ethan.

His small hand was still holding onto his shirt.

A child.

Not an heir.

Not a name.

Not a future business asset.

A child.

"What did he do?""

Emily sighed.

"Everything.""

The single word carried years of pain.

"He discovered I was pregnant before you did.""

Michael froze.

"What?""

"He knew.""

"How?""

"I told him.""

The answer surprised him.

"Why?""

Emily's voice softened.

"Because I thought he would help me.""

Michael closed his eyes.

A mistake.

Another person who trusted the wrong Harrington.

"He told me he would make sure you took responsibility.""

"And instead?""

"He disappeared.""

Michael looked at Victoria.

She looked broken.

Emily continued.

"Then after Lucas was born, your father contacted me.""

"What did he say?""

"He said a child born outside the Harrington family image would destroy your future.""

Michael felt sick.

"So he took Lucas.""

"No.""

Emily's voice became firm.

"He tried.""

The room went still.

Michael looked at Rachel.

Rachel nodded slowly.

Emily continued.

"Your father's people came to take Lucas.""

"But they failed.""

"Yes.""

"Because of Rachel?""

"Because of Rachel.""

Michael looked at Rachel.

For eight years, this woman had protected his son.

A child she wasn't obligated to protect.

"Then why didn't you come to me?""

Emily went silent.

Michael waited.

Finally, she answered:

"Because your father made me believe you knew.""

His brow furrowed.

"What?""

"He showed me documents.""

"What documents?""

"Proof that you had agreed to keep Lucas away.""

Michael's chest tightened.

"That's impossible.""

"I know that now.""

Michael gripped the phone.

"But you believed it?""

"I was young.""

Emily's voice cracked.

"I had just lost everything. I thought you abandoned us.""

The words hurt.

Because somewhere deep inside, Michael knew how many lives had been destroyed by misunderstandings.

"I never knew.""

"I know.""

A pause.

"That's why I'm calling now.""

Michael looked at the people around him.

"Why now?""

Emily answered:

"Because your father isn't the only one who came back.""

Michael frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Before she could answer, a loud sound came from outside.

A car.

Everyone turned toward the window.

Headlights cut through the rain.

Michael's security system should have alerted him.

But it didn't.

Someone had already disabled it.

His phone went silent.

"Emily?""

No answer.

The call had dropped.

Michael immediately moved.

"Stay here.""

Rachel grabbed his arm.

"No.""

He looked at her.

"You don't understand.""

"I understand more than anyone.""

She pointed toward the window.

"If someone found this house, they know where Emily is too.""

Michael froze.

Then he looked at Victoria.

"How many people knew about tonight?""

Nobody answered.

Slowly, Victoria whispered:

"My mother.""

Michael's face darkened.

"Eleanor.""

A knock came from the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Not a desperate knock.

Not a stranger asking for help.

A confident knock.

Someone who knew they belonged there.

Michael walked toward the entrance.

Sarah stepped beside him.

"You shouldn't open it.""

Michael looked at her.

"Who do you think it is?""

Sarah's expression was filled with fear.

"I don't know.""

The knock came again.

Three times.

Then a voice.

An old voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

"Michael.""

His blood turned cold.

Because he recognized it.

Even though he hadn't heard it in years.

His father's voice.

Impossible.

Dead men weren't supposed to knock.

Victoria covered her mouth.

"No.""

Michael stared at the door.

The voice continued.

"You've always been too trusting.""

Michael slowly reached for the handle.

Rachel whispered:

"Don't.""

But he opened it.

Standing outside was an elderly man in a dark coat.

Gray hair.

A cane.

A face Michael knew better than his own.

Richard Harrington.

His father.

Alive.

Michael couldn't speak.

Richard smiled faintly.

"Hello, son.""

The world stopped.

Michael stepped back.

"You died.""

Richard looked almost amused.

"That was the story everyone needed to believe.""

Michael's hands curled into fists.

"Why?""

Richard glanced inside the mansion.

His eyes landed on Ethan.

Then Lucas's photograph.

Then Sarah.

Finally Victoria.

"You found everything.""

Michael's voice was barely controlled.

"You destroyed my family.""

Richard shook his head.

"No.""

He stepped inside.

"I protected it.""

Michael laughed.

A cold, broken sound.

"Protected?""

Richard looked at him.

"You have no idea what I did to give you this life.""

Michael stared.

"You stole my children.""

Richard's expression didn't change.

"I secured your future.""

"By lying?""

"By making difficult choices.""

Sarah stepped forward.

"People are not choices.""

Richard looked at her.

"And you are the biggest mistake I ever made.""

Michael turned sharply.

"What does that mean?""

Richard smiled.

"Ask her.""

Everyone looked at Sarah.

Her face turned pale.

Michael felt his stomach drop.

"Sarah?""

Richard tapped his cane against the floor.

"Tell him.""

Sarah looked at Michael.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I didn't tell you everything.""

Michael's voice lowered.

"What else?""

Sarah closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"The reason I stayed in this house...""

A pause.

"...wasn't only because I promised Emily.""

Michael waited.

Sarah looked at Richard.

May you like

Then back at him.

"I was your father's daughter.""
