Chapter 5: The Mother Behind The Lies
Michael stared at the phone in his hand.
The screen had already gone dark, but the message burned in his mind.
*He knows about the first child. We need to leave tonight.*
The words were simple.
But they carried the weight of a confession.
Someone was afraid.
Someone knew the truth was finally coming out.
And someone was Victoria.
Slowly, Michael turned around.
His wife stood frozen in the middle of the bedroom.
For the first time in their marriage, she looked small.
Not elegant.
Not untouchable.
Not like the woman who could control every room she entered.
Just scared.
"Who is your mother?""
Michael's voice was quiet.
Victoria swallowed.
"Michael...""
"Who is your mother?""
The second time, his voice was sharper.
Sarah stood silently behind him, holding Ethan close.
Even the baby seemed to feel the tension.
Victoria looked at the phone.
Then at the door.
Like she was searching for an escape.
There wasn't one.
"Her name is Eleanor.""
Michael waited.
"And?""
Victoria closed her eyes.
"My mother helped me.""
The admission landed harder than any accusation.
Michael stared.
"Helped you do what?""
Victoria's lips trembled.
"I didn't plan any of this.""
"That's not an answer.""
She wiped her tears.
"I was twenty-six.""
Michael laughed bitterly.
"You were old enough to know right from wrong.""
Victoria flinched.
"I was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
Her eyes lifted to his.
"Of losing you.""
Michael shook his head.
"Because of another woman?""
Victoria said nothing.
"Because Emily had my child?""
Silence.
"Because you knew I had a son somewhere and you decided I didn't deserve to know?""
Victoria's face collapsed.
"I didn't know he was yours at first.""
Michael stopped.
"What?""
She took a shaky breath.
"After Emily died, my mother found out about the baby.""
Sarah's expression changed.
Michael noticed.
Victoria continued.
"She thought the child was a problem.""
"A problem?""
"She said you were becoming powerful. That a child from a short relationship could destroy everything.""
Michael felt sick.
"My child was a problem to her?""
Victoria looked down.
"I didn't agree with her.""
"But you followed her.""
"I was scared!""
Her voice broke.
The entire room went silent.
Victoria covered her face.
"I had just found out I was pregnant with Ethan. We were finally building a life together. You were starting to become someone everyone knew.""
Michael stared.
"You were pregnant with Ethan?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"And that was enough reason to hide my other child?""
"No.""
The answer came immediately.
But too late.
Michael looked away.
He couldn't recognize the person standing in front of him.
The woman he married.
The woman he trusted.
The mother of his son.
"I need the whole truth.""
Victoria sat down slowly on the edge of the bed.
Her expensive dress folded beneath her.
For once, she looked exhausted.
"After Emily died, my mother arranged everything.""
"What does that mean?""
"She contacted the children's home.""
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"The Harrington Foundation children's home?""
Victoria nodded.
"My mother donated money there for years. She knew people.""
Sarah whispered:
"She used your own foundation.""
Michael looked at her.
Sarah's face was filled with anger.
"I found the records.""
Victoria looked at Sarah.
"You weren't supposed to.""
"No.""
Sarah's voice became firm.
"I wasn't.""
Michael turned back.
"Why did you stay silent, Sarah?""
The question hurt her.
He saw it.
"I tried to tell you.""
"When?""
"Many times.""
"Then why didn't you?""
Sarah looked at Ethan.
"Because every time I got close, something happened.""
"What kind of things?""
She hesitated.
"Warnings.""
Michael frowned.
"From who?""
Sarah didn't answer.
He already knew.
"Victoria?""
Sarah looked down.
"I never saw her directly.""
"But?""
"But someone always knew.""
Michael looked at Victoria.
She looked away.
That was enough.
He walked to the window.
Outside, the Harrington estate stretched across the darkness.
The place he had built.
The place where he believed his family was safe.
Now it felt like a beautiful prison.
"Where is the child?""
Victoria started crying again.
"I don't know.""
Michael turned.
"Stop saying that.""
"It's true.""
"You just admitted you knew about him.""
"I knew he existed.""
"Where is he?""
"I don't know.""
Michael stared.
"How?""
Victoria looked at the floor.
"Because my mother moved him.""
"Moved him where?""
"I don't know.""
Sarah suddenly spoke.
"I know.""
Both turned.
Michael looked at her.
"You do?""
Sarah nodded slowly.
"Not where he is now.""
She looked at the old documents.
"But I know where he was sent first.""
Michael stepped closer.
"Tell me.""
Sarah took a breath.
"Three months after Emily died, the child was transferred from the foundation home to another facility.""
"What facility?""
Sarah's voice lowered.
"A private adoption center.""
Michael froze.
"Adoption?""
Victoria whispered:
"Michael...""
"No.""
He looked at her.
"You knew?""
She shook her head.
"I found out later.""
"Later?""
"When my mother told me.""
Michael's eyes hardened.
"What did she say?""
Victoria looked ashamed.
"She said the baby would have a better life.""
Michael's expression turned cold.
"Without his father.""
She cried harder.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"When?""
She had no answer.
"When he was five?""
"Michael...""
"When he was ten?""
"No.""
"When he was old enough to ask why his father never came?""
Victoria covered her mouth.
Michael turned away.
He couldn't look at her.
Then Sarah's phone suddenly buzzed.
Everyone froze.
Sarah looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
"What is it?"" Michael asked.
She didn't answer.
"Sarah.""
Slowly, she turned the phone toward him.
A message.
From an unknown number.
Only six words.
*You should have stayed quiet.*
Michael's blood ran cold.
"Who sent that?""
Sarah's hands trembled.
"I don't know.""
Another message appeared.
This time, with a photograph.
Michael looked at the image.
And his entire body went still.
It was a picture of a teenage boy.
Around eight years old.
Standing outside a school.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.
*Your first son is alive.*
Michael stared.
His throat tightened.
Then he saw the name written beneath it.
A name he had never heard before.
But one that changed everything.
*Lucas Harrington.*
The room went silent.
Victoria whispered:
"No...""
Michael looked at her.
"You know that name.""
May you like
Her face turned completely pale.
And for the first time, she didn't deny it.
