Chapter 8: The Truth About Ethan

Michael stood in the doorway, unable to move.

Rain fell behind Rachel.

The mansion lights flickered above them.

And every person in the room seemed to be holding a different piece of the truth.

But only one thing mattered.

Ethan.

His son.

The child currently resting against his chest.

Michael looked down at him.

Then back at Sarah.

"What did you just say?""

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"Ethan wasn't born the way you were told.""

The words echoed.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

"Stop.""

Her voice was desperate.

"Sarah, don't.""

Michael looked at his wife.

That reaction was enough.

Because fear had replaced anger.

And Michael had learned something tonight.

Fear told the truth before words did.

"What happened when Ethan was born?""

Victoria shook her head.

"Michael...""

"No.""

His voice was firm.

"I want the truth.""

Rachel stood silently near the entrance.

She didn't interrupt.

She knew this moment belonged to them.

Sarah looked at Ethan.

"I didn't want to tell you like this.""

"Then how did you plan to tell me?""

Sarah's lips trembled.

"I didn't know if I ever could.""

Michael felt a sharp pain in his chest.

"Why?""

"Because I made a promise.""

"To Emily?""

Sarah nodded.

"And because I was afraid.""

"Of Victoria?""

Sarah looked away.

"Of what would happen if the truth came out.""

Michael turned toward his wife.

"Victoria.""

She wiped her tears.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

Her voice broke.

"When I got pregnant with Ethan, my pregnancy was difficult.""

Michael frowned.

"I know.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"You know what I allowed you to know.""

The sentence made him freeze.

Victoria continued.

"There were complications.""

"What kind?""

She looked down.

"The doctors weren't sure I could carry the baby.""

Michael remembered that time.

The hospital visits.

The fear.

The nights Victoria cried.

He remembered holding her hand and promising they would get through it.

"I was terrified," she whispered.

Michael's expression softened for a second.

Then Sarah spoke.

"But Ethan wasn't the only baby involved.""

The softness disappeared.

Michael looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

Sarah took a deep breath.

"When Victoria was admitted to the hospital, another woman was there.""

Rachel looked at her.

"Emily.""

Sarah nodded.

Michael felt dizzy.

"No.""

He shook his head.

"Emily died three weeks after giving birth.""

"Yes.""

"Victoria was already pregnant with Ethan.""

"Yes.""

"Then how are they connected?""

Sarah looked at him.

"Because they were treated by the same doctor.""

A cold feeling moved through him.

"What doctor?""

Sarah hesitated.

"Dr. Marcus Vale.""

The name meant nothing.

But Victoria reacted.

Michael saw it.

"You know him.""

Victoria whispered:

"Yes.""

"Who is he?""

She didn't answer.

Sarah did.

"He was the fertility specialist who helped Victoria.""

Michael stared.

"Fertility?""

Victoria closed her eyes.

Michael looked at her.

"You told me you got pregnant naturally.""

A long silence.

Then Victoria whispered:

"I lied.""

The room felt silent.

Even the rain seemed distant.

Michael stepped back.

"Why?""

Victoria cried.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

His voice cracked.

"But nobody tells me what they were afraid of.""

Victoria covered her face.

"I thought I would lose you.""

Michael stared.

"You keep saying that like it explains everything.""

"It doesn't.""

She looked at him.

"I know.""

For the first time, she sounded broken.

Not defensive.

Not manipulative.

Just broken.

"I had been trying to have a child for years.""

Michael remembered.

The doctor appointments.

The disappointment.

The tears.

"But you told me there was hope.""

"There was.""

She swallowed.

"Dr. Vale offered another option.""

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"What option?""

Victoria didn't answer.

Sarah did.

"An embryo transfer.""

Michael looked confused.

"An embryo?""

Sarah nodded.

"Dr. Vale had access to donor programs.""

The room became colder.

Michael looked at Victoria.

"Are you saying Ethan isn't mine?""

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"Michael, no.""

She grabbed his hand.

"Ethan is your son.""

"Then what are you hiding?""

Victoria looked at Sarah.

Sarah closed her eyes.

And finally said:

"Ethan was created using genetic material from two different sources.""

Michael stared.

"What does that mean?""

Rachel spoke quietly.

"It means someone changed the records.""

Michael turned.

"Who?""

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria whispered:

"Dr. Vale.""

The name finally had weight.

Michael looked at her.

"What did he do?""

Victoria sat down.

"I don't know everything.""

"Tell me what you know.""

She took a shaking breath.

"When I found out I was pregnant, Dr. Vale told me the procedure worked.""

"And?""

"He told me not to ask questions.""

Michael stared.

"Why would you agree?""

Victoria looked at Ethan.

"Because I wanted a child.""

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

"I wanted our family.""

Michael looked away.

"And after Ethan was born?""

Victoria whispered:

"Dr. Vale disappeared.""

Sarah stepped forward.

"Because he was involved with Emily too.""

Michael looked at her.

"What?""

Sarah nodded.

"Emily went to him after discovering she was pregnant.""

Michael's face changed.

"He was her doctor?""

"Yes.""

Rachel clenched her fists.

"He knew everything.""

Michael looked at the folder Rachel brought.

"What does this prove?""

Rachel opened it.

Inside were medical records.

Old documents.

Photographs.

Michael scanned the pages.

Then stopped.

There it was.

A DNA report.

His eyes moved across the results.

The room became silent.

Because the answer was there.

Clear.

Impossible to deny.

*Lucas Carter Harrington — Biological son of Michael Harrington.*

Michael's breath shook.

Then he turned the page.

Another report.

His hands froze.

*Ethan Harrington — Biological son of Michael Harrington.*

He looked up.

Both boys.

Both his.

Both stolen from him in different ways.

"Why?""

The word came out broken.

"Why would anyone do this?""

Sarah looked at Victoria.

"Because someone wanted control.""

Michael understood.

The money.

The family name.

The company.

His legacy.

Someone had seen his children as pieces on a chessboard.

Not human beings.

"Where is Dr. Vale now?""

Rachel looked down.

"He disappeared.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"Everyone disappears.""

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody moved.

Michael answered.

A familiar voice came through.

A voice that made Victoria's face drain of color.

"Michael.""

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Not from tonight.

From years ago.

From the few memories he had of a woman who changed his life without him realizing it.

"Emily?""

The room went completely still.

A woman's breathing came through the phone.

Then:

"I know you have questions.""

Michael couldn't speak.

Emily's voice trembled.

"But before you hate Victoria...""

A pause.

"You need to know what really happened the night Ethan was born.""

Michael gripped the phone.

"You're alive.""

A long silence.

Then Emily whispered:

"Yes.""

His heart stopped.

"Where are you?""

Another pause.

Then her answer came.

And it changed everything.

"I was hiding from the same person who has been watching your family for eight years.""

Michael's voice lowered.

"Who?""

May you like

Emily's next words were barely audible.

"Your father.""
